Award-winning Scottish actor Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty, 28 Weeks Later) has been cast in the leading role of Dr. David Rush on SCI FI Channel's new original series Stargate Universe, the latest adventure in the Stargate franchise produced by MGM television.
Production will begin in Vancouver, Canada, in February 2009, with an eye to a summer 2009 premiere. Additional casting is currently underway.
Described as edgier and younger in tone than the two previous series, Universe follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack.
The desperate survivors emerge aboard an Ancient ship missing in the far reaches of space. As they fight to survive, Dr. Rush (Carlyle) works to unlock the mysteries of the ship and return the group home, but evidence of his ulterior motives soon arises.
Brad Wright and Robert Cooper--co-creators of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, who both currently serve as executive producers on Atlantis--will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.
Stargate Universe will debut as a two-hour movie event on SCI FI and will be distributed by MGM Worldwide Television Distribution.
Besides playing a flesh-eating zombie in the 28 Days Later sequel and a naked British postal worker in Full Monty, Carlyle was the famously pain-resistant villain in the 007 movie The World Is Not Enough.

That's wonderful news, but are any of the other stars from SG-1, Atlantis, etc. going to be in it? I was so upset that Atlantis is ending it's series. I looked forward to coming home and escaping to another world of adventure after a long day at work. I hope this new series won't be a disappointment.

There is a hugh void on the SciFi Channel. Used to be 2, maybe 3 series to look forward to the next episode. I just finished watching the second from last Atlantis episode (Det. Sheppard), and it seems the writers were getting the "old Magic" back. Oh, well.......

Ok, here it goes fellow Gaters. First, Atlantis is one of the few true sci-fi shows left on the Sci-Fi channel and now it's being canceled. I admit, I was slow to take to the show. I am a huge SG-1 fan and always will be, but I did warm up to Atlantis and now I love the show. Most of the people that i know that watch Atlantis feel the same. It saddens me that the show isn't getting the same chance that SG-1 got. There was a time when SG-1 had low ratings and bad scripts, but instead of canceling the show, the writers and producers dug in and made some changes and the show thrived. It seems that now, nobody wants to do this. instead, they want to cancel a really good show and make a new one. at least the powers at be didn't make the same mistake as those at Paramount did with Star Trek by having two shows going at the same time. And yes, i know, Atlantis started while SG-1 was still airing. I just believe that Atlantis deserves the same chance that SG-1 got.
Second. This new show, Universe, sounds alot like Star Trek Voyager. Stranded in another galaxy in a starship trying to make their way home???????? Couldn't they have come up with something better? I mean, really. Is there nobody out there with some original ideas left? Do we have to keep reusing the same old ideas????? I'm sorry, but, when i read the premise for Universe, I had horrible flashbacks to the Borg, bad acting, horrible story lines, skin-tight silver jumpsuits and a never ending voyage through space and time! Am i the only one?
What they need to do is shelve Universe for now, continue with Atlantis and when they get an original idea that MESHES with the Stargate universe, THEN use it on the new show. Does anyone out there agree with me? if so, please post here and on any message boards you can find. Thanks.

Who had the stupid idea to cancel Stargate Atlantis anyhow? As far as I am concerned, SG, both SG1 and Atlantis are classics. I used to love Starwars, but after seeing the first Stargate movie all those years, followed by SG1, then Atlantis, Starwars pales in comparison (Sorry George Lucas, but there you did confuse the crap out of me when you named A New Hope EP IV). Scifi channel management should live up to the channel name and continue with Atlantis. Quite frankly, how can you name the channel SciFi when these are no decent stuff being screened? Come on guys, get real and bring some hope back to your customers, you know the ones that like SciFi and bring the money in!!! Cancelling after 5 Seasons is a joke guys!!! By the way, are these the same guys behind Battelstar Gallatica? If so, now wonder they are good at making bad decisions! BG is a pathetic joke, by no means in the same league as the orginal (not that it was very good either). So, are you going to hand your heads in shame for making a piss poor decision about SGA, or are you going to bring back the series and get some faith back from your customers? I think that another 3 seasons should suffice, at the very least.. But hey, I am sure that the fans, you know your customers, would love to see you keep with tradition and give us another 5 seasons!!!

Sounds like a remake of Lost in Space -- people on a spaceship trying to get back to Earth... someone on board with "ulterior motives" (Dr. Smith, anyone?). But, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and watch it and see.

I think if it has any relation to Lost In Space, it will be a great success. LIS lasted 3 seasons. In this day and age of television, that's a lifetime! Bravo Sci-Fi Channel.

/Agree with Razorwalker... This is Voyager all over again. And as much as i like voyager, i enjoy Atlantis More. My recommendation to everyone is VOTE WITH YOUR FEET. Scifi plays more &^*% than actual sci-fi, if you dont like it, dont subscribe to it. I dont subscribe to it as i only like 1 or 2 of the shows on there, and quite easilly source them elsewhere.
SciFi - If you guys kill Universe i dont think you will have a channel to come back to....
By scifire at 5:40 PM ON 01/09/09
Come on guys, WAKE UP! Haven't you noticed that there isn't anymore outerspace/spaceship series on TV anymore? Do you want to destroy this part of the genre forever? Give Universe a chance. So many people thought Atlantis would die when Weir and Beckett were let go. It thrived! Don't kill Universe just because it sounds like another series that came before it. With the team behind it, I am sure they won't let you down!

I have to agree with Razorwalker, SciFi should give the Atlantis more of a chance to bring up there ratings..... SG1 had really low ratings and it still was able to bring it back to life.... I know if they would put to there effort in to making it better then they will have a hit that might even go further than SG1 did.....
By mamaben at 6:52 PM ON 01/13/09
I have to agree with the majority of SciFi viewers. I am totally disgusted with the loss of SG-1 and now Atlantis. This new series Universe does sound like a poor rip off of Star Trek. Come on!!! Give us viewers some GOOD TV. We would like to see Atlantis back--or at least something as good as.....I miss SG-1, but I thought I could still get my fun from Atlantis--until now. You may very well lose a whole lotta viewers unless you make sure Universe is at least as good as its predecessors. I know I won't watch if it isn't good. And since there isn't anything else to watch on SciFi except crummy horror flicks, I'm gone!!

I agree with most of the comments above, we need a good scifi show in outerspace. Atlantis did seem to be having story line originality issues but if they were to dig in and come up with good stuff the ratings would go back up. Other than Eureka (I know its kinda goofy but sometimes a goofy show is good!) there is absolutely no reason to watch the scifi channel. And yes, they need a whole lot more episodes to fill in because I get really tired of waiting for the next half of the season to start!

Whats more to say? Television, I watch little as there's not much to capture me, yet sci-fi was & still is my weakness.
The ONLY reason for wanting the best tv reception was for sci fi channel. Yet those in charge have literally ruined their domain. Needless to say they destroy their own programming worse than network tv ever did. Go ahead, take up 1/3rd of the screen to advert some un-related show.
The sci-fi network should be a premier for all thats good with us. Instead you get a better broadcast of their flagship shows on other generic stations.
Can't say I haven't noticed they're bringing in shows that were cut from regular network tv. Ones that were "CUT SHORT" of their lives by idiot decision makers on those networks. Could they be seeing their competitions mistakes?
Yet first I'd think they should investigate and fix their own mistakes, all of which are adding up greatly with (mostly) better shows than they are getting.
One thing is certain. When I had to work for another and be judged, if I had made their errors in judgement I would have most certainly been out of employment.
