ABC orders pilot for a reboot of V, the 1980s alien-invasion series

ABC orders pilot for a reboot of \<i\>V\<\/i\>, the 1980s alien-invasion series

ABC has given a pilot order to V, a re-imagining of the 1980s miniseries about an alien invasion, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Written on spec by The 4400 co-creator/executive producer Scott Peters, the new V will center on a female Homeland Security agent.

Peters is executive-producing the pilot with HDFilms principal Jason Hall.

This is the second ABC pilot picked up so far based on a 1980s property; the first was The Witches of Eastwick. Both are being produced by Warner Brothers TV.

It's unclear whether this proposed series has anything to do with original V creator Kenneth Johnson's sequel novel, V: The Second Generation, or his proposed reboot series or a proposed spinoff series by Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski.

It is cool that this is coming back I liked the old show. I think it is ironic that it is coming to ABC, since the first series, and mini-movies ran on NBC.

I would love to have read that this was the JMS spinoff instead.

NBC and ABC traded off a lot of their older properties. For example NBC has (or had) the rights to Dark Shadows. it's why it aired on the Scifi channel for so long. I wish they would bring back Dark Shadows, especially since Tim Burton's doing that new movie version.

I'm actually glad someone other than NBC is picking this up. For the last few years NBC has been letting this Sci-fi fan down(cancellation of Journeyman, Bionic Woman, and My Own Worst enemy; not to mention the state they have let Heroes get to...). Any network would be a better choice than the peacock, again my opinion of course.

Spirit, as for being let down by NBC / Scifi. Don't get me started. I'm still bitter about The Dresden Files being canceled when it was their third highest rated show of 2007. Who does that?!

By Anachronite at 9:11 PM ON 01/26/09

been there done that. Is there nothing original left in the world? Givbe us something new that is REAL SCI-FI!

I hope everyone remembers that any greatness to The 4400 came from Ira Steven Behr who made the show examine the most pressing issues of our time and often was censored by USA Network. Scott Peters' pilot was heavily re-written by Behr, Robert Hewitt Wolfe, and Craig Sweeny. Then, on the series DVD set, Peters had the gaul to say that he thinks The 4400 made a wrong turn in Seasons 3 and 4, when they were actually the best of the lot and stopped trying to rip off elements of The X-Files.

I'm not interested in anything Peters does. Ira Steven Behr is my hero! If only Sci Fi would resurrect The 4400 with him at the helm! They wouldn't regret it.

If they can do with V what they did for Battlestar Galactica I'm all for it. Now, if they could do a good reboot of Buck Rogers I'd be in heaven. (Too bad about Flash Gordon being canceled--but it didn't have anything that excited me.)

Hello! Bionic Woman?, Are you Fracking serious?. I'll give a benefit of the doubt for My own worst enemy and i defenetly support you on Journey Man if you like Bionic woman then you love Knight Rider. Lord!

I am sick to puking at the term "Homeland Security"; a nightmare out of Nazi Germany if there ever was one. If it's going to be DHS against the aliens-who-think-we're-a-delicacy, guess who I'll be rooting for?

By veritas at 10:40 AM ON 01/27/09

Great, yet another "re-imagining" by people who don't have the talent to create something original of their own.

By Doug Eubanks at 11:29 AM ON 01/27/09

I have to agree that I'm loving the return of V, but the Homeland Security bit has been played out way too much.

One of the Poseidon remakes included a Homeland Security agent, which I stopped watching 10 minutes into the movie because of it. I have been completely turned off on the new Knight Rider, and one reason was the Homeland Security aspect of the show.

One of the many reasons that the original V was a great story was that it dealt with issues (the holocaust) and that it was told mostly from the perspectives of average people.

"If they can do with V what they did for Battlestar Galactica I'm all for it."
-- Oh my thoughts exactly! V was a fantastic Mini-Series the first time and a great Mini-Series the second time. The regular TV show absolutely sucked! I am very glad that NBC is not doing this. They absolutely killed the franchise with their watered down and very unoriginal series.

--A reboot of Buck could be cool, but they will need to get as far away as humanly possible from the Gil Gerard 80's fluff. They could really do some very edgy stuff with a war between the worlds, and all the goodness that comes with it. When searched Buck to find the correct spelling of “Gerard” I noticed that they are indeed doing a revamp of the series. And none other then Frank Miller will Write and Direct ‘Buck Rogers’

On the Flash Gordon end… well Sci-Fi really screwed that up something bad. You had such a great premise and you made it about as predictable, formulaic, cliché and unexciting as you could. I stopped watching after the 3rd episode.

I just netflixed the old series last year and hoped it would get re-imagined. I use to hate re-vamps, but BSG shows that redoes can be great.

My problem however is ABC. Well actually all networks. ABC is just going to run it for one season and then cancel it like they did Invasion.

I don't understand why the Scifi channel can't step up and become a decent network by getting some of these concepts OR DEVELOPING NEW SHOWS. Why am I only tuning into a channel that targets my favorite genre once a week. With the exception of Tuesday for Eureka, but you get the point.

What is with them always trying to shove old series down our throat? Why did they try to play Charlie Jade; that ends with a cliffhanger and doesn't have a second season?

In conclusion, V could be great, but I won't hold my breath. Because they'll most likely mess it up, and even if it is good, they'll only cancel it after a season anyway.

I'm GLAD JMS is not doing the new "V." He dropped his version of "V" like a hotcake the second the network called and gave him the go ahead for "Baboon 5." Which means, he doesn't give a crivit about "V."

By willum at 8:12 PM ON 01/28/09

Is it any wonder that NBC has been dropping the ball on any and all sci-fi? They are part of Universal AND the sci-fi channel, which is always dumping good shows for asnine reasons.

By MUADIB at 3:09 PM ON 02/06/09

As far as nbc is concerned with scifi.Remember they were the network that cancelled the origional star trek in the 60's .And they have proven to be just a shortsided with the scifi channel with the cancellation of their top rated shows .farscape, both stargates and BSTR G.So don't expent these einsteins to do any thing differant than the same old stupidity.

By ceti at 10:21 PM ON 03/21/09

I echo a comment made earlier about V being about average people rising up against a fascist regime made up of collaborators and Visitors. It was actually quite radical for a Sci-Fi series.

Bringing in DHS will ruin the show. In a truly V plotline, the DHS would be serving the Visitors. The only hope is that this DHS agent becomes a renegade.
