Exclusive! New clip from Caprica, with never-before-seen footage

SCI FI Wire has an exclusive new clip from Caprica, the upcoming prequel series to SCI FI's hit series Battlestar Galactica! In the never-before-seen footage, Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz) gets a tour and an explanation of what happens in the mysterious V-Club from his daughter's friend Lacy (Magda Apanowicz).

Caprica, which kicks off with a two-hour pilot movie, stars Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcomson and Polly Walker. Set 50 years before the events in Battlestar Galactica, Caprica follows two rival families--the Graystones and the Adamas--as they grow, compete and thrive in the vibrant world of the 12 Colonies, a society recognizably close to our own.

Production on the series is slated to begin in the summer of 2009 in Vancouver, Canada, for a 2010 premiere.

Looks to be amazing.

By Seriously? at 5:22 PM ON 01/05/09

I love BSG, but this looks really REALLY bad.

Hard enough to make the show engaging knowing the planet is gonna get blowd up - worse when the story looks this idiotic

By Bald_Jason74 at 6:30 PM ON 01/05/09

Looks better than the trailer made it out to be. I know that a lot of BSG fans are going to hate it on principal, but I'm really looking forward to this.

By momo at 7:10 PM ON 01/05/09

I liked the previous sneak peaks. This one looks like it's been picked mid-stream and thus the hokey dialogue.

By Tub_of_Goo at 8:44 PM ON 01/05/09

where is Clue #16 Sci-Fi ???? Did putting this blog up take all your focus? The clue is now nearly 5 days late. Get it together. The Caprica clip reminds of the vibe of Total Recall 2070

By Jimmy at 8:58 PM ON 01/05/09

I'm sure BSG fans will dislike this series simply because they never wanted BSG to end. To quote the final episode of Star Trek: TNG, all good things.... Caprica will not be BSG, but I for one plan to give it a chance and see what Moore and company have put together. My worry is what Sci Fi will do. They aren't exactly know for nurturing dark and intelligent series.

By The Televixen at 11:07 PM ON 01/05/09

I find this clip fascinating. I've always been intrigued by theme of One God versus many gods, a major bone of contention between Cylons and Humans. This just increases my anticipation for the prequel series! I know that many BSG fans don't share my sentiments.

Oh, and if you're interested, you can read my blog post on the clip: http://thetelevixen.com/2009/01/05/exciting-caprica-scene-now-online/

By Muldfeld at 12:44 AM ON 01/06/09

I've been thrilled at the description of the show, the involvement of Essai Morales and especially Eric Stoltz, and particularly the political themes involving identity politics ("My name isn't Adams; it's Adama!") and terrorism, but I'm a bit concerned about going too sci fi. The dialogue seemed a bit more hokey when the woman talked about "the one true God" -- the exact phrasing Head Six uses -- and somehow it sounds awkward following her cynical disposition. I am thankful Sci Fi granted this show a full season, as I had been literally praying for it for the past several months, but I would feel happier if I knew Ron Moore -- or at least Ira Steven Behr -- were involved in writing actual dialogue and not just reviewing scripts. I'm glad Michael Angeli will be involved and I hope they get back the amazing Toni Graphia, whose every episode on BSG was phenomenal.

By ManWithSword at 3:34 AM ON 01/06/09

I'm looking forward to Caprica. The dialogue from the clip shown reminds me of the young actors in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where you have an adult, and experienced actor, doing his best to work with an awkward sounding late teens / early twenties actor. The actual awkwardness in the girl's voice is right for the character, however, given that she seems to latch onto one fad after another, the latest one being her new found belief in a monotheistic religion. Her proclamations about God lack conviction. I was a bit disappointed to realize that it would seem the cylons didn't invent the ability to mimic humans, but took the technology somehow from Graystone. However, this will also make for some brilliant drama, watching the convergence of AI, genetic engineering, robotics, and monotheistic religion, which ultimately give rise to the 12 Cylon models of BSG.

By Just AnudderBSGfan at 12:44 PM ON 01/06/09

I'm really excited about this new series. And I'm really disappointed that BSG is coming to an end. It is the best sci-fi series ever to be aired on television. And perhapds the best series ever aired in any genre.

By Olucatei at 8:41 PM ON 01/06/09

I'm not going to pass judgment on the quality of the series yet. The idea of virtual realities might tie in with Cylon projection and downloading. As for why they are not seen in BSG could be explained by a ban on the technology for moral reasons, or maybe they caused cancer. I would be genuinely intrigued if the door she was opening was to the Opera House, or something of similar caliber.

By bgamore at 10:40 AM ON 01/08/09

This seems to miss the mark as far as the BSG universe is concerned. Seems more like a soap opera than scifi. Why not do a prequel about the defeat of the Cylons (initially), the origins of "skin jobs", the infiltration of the 12 colonies by Cylons and the politics behind the retirement of the battle star fleet (can't be coincidence that the Cylons attacked just as Galactica retired; must have been a lot of Cylon politicians).

By starboyfalls at 12:45 PM ON 01/10/09

I really like the idea of Caprica but I don't know if it's just going to pick up the slack of mysteries from BSG when BSG goes away. If it does I'll feel like a tool and I'll stop watching.

By bsgelf at 2:46 AM ON 01/12/09

what happened after they opened the door??!!!! we have to wait a year to find out?

By WilliamBoone at 7:25 PM ON 01/12/09

what a disappointment. maybe I don't see the genius, but it is too far away from BSG. We are right now in the crisis, maybe at the end of capitalism and civilisation and BSG played so well with it. But Caprica??? I think it will be a one season show or it is able to deal with reality as BSG or ST:TOS and in a very strange way EFC did. Also to be mentioned Tekwar. Socialism, Communism and (the last standing) Capitalism is dead. It all gives no hope to the ppl anymore. This is indeed the end of times as we know it. My idea: why not doing BSG again in todays timeline. or why not doing it again from the cylons perspective? Caprica - nice name BTW - seems not to fit the universe.

Finally: BSG will never be topped by another remake. One can see the low budget sometimes, but boy did they make those bucks work for us! It is such a great piece of art! ppl will need 10,20 years to finally get it. and now? show us a show from the opposite side: the worst country of the world (the USA = 12 colonies) attacks the peace loving rest of it (the cylons). why not?

ps.: I love the US and most of its ppl. however this would look different if u live lets say in south america or iran. (I hate the iranian goverment btw, no more feudal societies!!)

By Stryse at 3:51 PM ON 01/13/09

I'm confused... if they aren't starting production until later this year (2009), how is it we have sneak peek clips to watch?

By flyboyjonesy@yahoo.com at 11:09 PM ON 01/13/09

The one great thing that distinguishes good Sci-fi from bad is good story telling. Look at Star wars, and The Matrix 1. With that foundation the show will be a hit. The special effects in BSG are secondary to the plot. The questions posed, the morality plays, that is what kept me glued to the tube. Oh, and casting beautiful women (Grace Park for example) in major roles didn't hurt either. With all that being said. The show may not be a hit with the hard core Sci-fi fan if there isn't enough spaceship action, but this series was always bigger than that.

By gnarlygod at 12:55 AM ON 01/14/09

I am ok with prequels if there is a happy or unknown ending in the future premise the show is based on. The fact that we KNOW every bit of this is going to be destroyed would make it hard for me to get involved.

By Osso at 4:27 PM ON 01/14/09

YUK!

By kyah at 8:05 PM ON 01/14/09

what the hell? this is the best clip that they could Gin up? This is pretty stupid. Great way to turn off the fan base.

Why not make a BSG series about the original war between the Cylons and humans? DUH that would be better than a planet bound drama where you know they are going to get nuked soon.

By mja_integ at 9:43 PM ON 01/14/09

2010?! I was really hoping that it would come out this year after the last season of battlestar. But then again 2010 isn't that far off. I CAN'T WAIT!!!

By DarkNoble at 11:18 PM ON 01/14/09

The United States the worst country in the world? Please do not judge the entire of our country by a few degenerates. There is more good that comes from Americans then any other country in the world. I think perhaps you should ask some people from South America who have benefited greatly from Americans.

By Curious... at 11:45 PM ON 01/14/09

I'm gonna give this show a chance, but already... I'm not real thrilled about it. It looks contrived and thin, but I could be totally off. Like I said, I'm gonna give it a chance, but I'm not very hopeful.

By LetoAtreides at 10:31 PM ON 01/15/09

Well I don't know about you guys, but I'm excited about BSG starting again tomorrow night, and I've thoroughly enjoyed every episode. Anything done by these minds has been golden, and I'm just thrilled to know that once the series is at an end, it really isn't!

I'm going to give Caprica a fighting chance, and I bet the idea of the 12 colonies and different houses will have a Dune feel to it, except minus the spice and the gigantic sand worms :p

A lot of potential, and I can't wait already! :D

By Prequel? at 8:30 AM ON 01/16/09

Gosh, wonder how it ends.
Kinda like the Clone Wars animated movie, a reeeeaaaal nail-biter.

By PunchDrunk at 9:13 AM ON 01/16/09

Well this seems intriguing, but 50 years in the past seems like a random number. All i have to say is that there better be Cylons in this series. I love Eric Stoltz tho

By scorpio27 at 8:57 PM ON 01/16/09

i'll give it a chance. wish i knew more of the backstory here.

By rock at 12:20 AM ON 01/17/09

Um.I dont know. We,ll have to wait ad see.I love BSG.And Im going to want to like this. But these prequil, and post shows almost never work.Anyone remember 'Joey'and 'Aftermash'?

By DVO8564 at 1:45 AM ON 01/17/09

I cant wait...

By wbuk at 9:31 AM ON 01/20/09

Frankly, the whole premise of this new Caprica show leaves me very wet...

Here’s why:

On a conceptual level, good sci-fi works when it abstracts the every-day; BSG was fascinating, beyond the hot cast, as it allowed issues like suicide bombings, torture, race-and sexual-and gender politics to come to the fore.

It seems to me that a show like Caprica will enable these, and other, "big issues in life" to be fore-grounded. This show sounds like a bold move both on the part of its creators, and the moneymen behind it... I think we should all support something bold - It might turn out a bit crap, but with the genius that is Moore I suspect this might tell us more about our world than a news network or a paper. After all, good Sci-Fi's raison d’être has always been being more honest and thoughtful about life than conventional fiction permitted.

By darkfire at 3:32 PM ON 01/21/09

I agree. It looks bad.... I thought it was originally supposed to explain the creation of cylons, etc.. However, unless they changed the story line ( of Battlestar Galactica 2004 ).. It doesnt. Since, well, in the previews they're using "skin jobs" and not Centurions and it's the wrong time period. Ugh.

By tjones at 12:16 PM ON 01/23/09

think if done right this may have a chance. hop so sci fi has been doing much better with its shows as of late

By Greg Johnson at 1:32 PM ON 01/24/09

Caprica looks horrible. What's with SciFi trying to be like every other network now? First it's sacrificing Atlantis for a SG show that's less about scifi and more about people, and now they're trading in BG for this rubbish?

By Vadim at 8:18 AM ON 02/02/09

To me very much to look serial BSG, but to do of it a prologue, type Santa-barbara, I think a parcel of rubbish, here would make a serial about that is better as developed cylons, after the first cylons wars as they began to look people.
P.S forgive me my English I from Russia, Moscow

By Fox McCloud at 9:35 PM ON 02/06/09

whoever thought up of this show was in desperate need of ideas. This looks really really bad.

Hey lets expand on the BSG RELIGION and have everyone FRAK! WOOT! And it won't have SPACE OR SPACESHIPS! ALL DRAMA! .................. EPIC FAIL.

By June at 1:11 AM ON 02/07/09

What??!??? This ISNT like BSG???!??

How dare you, Ronald Moore, try to express yourself in a way that is different from what you've been doing for the last five years.

Please only repeat yourself. My small mind can't take anything different.

By Anners at 5:19 PM ON 02/08/09

*sigh*... shouldn't have watched the prequel, after just watching a heartwrenching and exciting episode of BSG... :o)
Can't see that this new one will match up..

By Wildhare at 1:34 PM ON 02/09/09

This clip makes the show look really stupid. I was hoping for something a little more along the lines of BSG, my favorite show ever. Wow...now I'm sad.

By Laurel10 at 7:37 PM ON 02/10/09

I don't get it. Can't they just bring BSG back?

Yup well not gonna judge it till I see it and all you muppets getting worked up over what it may or may not be like is laughable.....it happens every time a spin off show is created. Still I do agree with what one of you guys said about there being a severe lack of real sci fi on telly now.....THANKS SCI FI CHANNEL!!! RIP Farscape RIP Enterprise RIP John Doe RIP Journeyman RIP SG-1 RIP Atlantis (don't get me started on the last ep) and the list goes on......anyone remember how Sci Fi left us all when they cancelled Farscape? D'argo seeing his mates alive one second and 'dead' the next? My bitterness and resentment towards the channel is immense and to this day I refuse to watch it......thankfully I live in the UK and it is Sky that gives me these shows so I can still enjoy them without feeling guilty for it. Yah I can feel the rage inside building as i type this lol images of john/caval saying he wants to see what perfection looks like on the inside is running through my head as i imagine what the Sci Fi execs look like on the inside rofl anyway rant over im gonna watch No Exit one more time....OMG WHAT AN EPISODE!!!

By smutterly at 4:16 AM ON 02/21/09

I trust the production team. I love BSG and I loved Carnivale. This will be different from BSG but different is good. I am one of the mourners who will really miss the original series, but I like Eric, and I think Caprica will be very interesting.

By jroy37 at 11:10 PM ON 02/21/09

what DID happen to that show John Doe? i was really into that show. does anyone know what the story was going to be, his best friend turning out to be the mysterious knitty cap man, and why did the phoenix people sign everything? they really left us hanging...

the cancel bsg and the gonna make another spin off.

now how much sense does that make ?

bsg fans might as well tos there bsg collection in the garbage bin , do the think whe are fools buying the spin off caprica when it comes out on dvd ?

By Jetsetter at 11:45 PM ON 03/05/09

I personally am glad that we will have an ending to BSG, nothing worse than a show just being cancelled or retired ala Invasion and Las Vegas...two of the worst ways to end a good series, if you watched them, you know what I mean. As far as Caprica goes....time will tell, I will watch it, at least to give it a chance, but I have to agree with some of your posts, a series about the first cylon war would have been good...

By stmodeler at 8:21 PM ON 03/09/09

Is just me or does it seem like a revamp of Romeo & Juliet's Montagues and Capulets family rivalry done up modernistic style. I mean if the whole premise of BSG, the cylons & the great fighter battles is missing... whats the point but another prime time soap! Hopefully I'm missing something here but....

By Brucebleo at 9:50 PM ON 03/19/09

the thing you guys are missing the point of is, this show had got to be featuring the final 5 and the lead up to the first cylon war at some point......check out the timeline...its only ten years into the future from the starting point of the new series......and bsg did do time skipping in the show so it is feasible? and besides all this bitchin about spin offs is what got trek cancelled just as the romulan war was gearing up ffs :( this has got to stop!! do we want more reality tv shows taking up all the air time or should we not be championing all curent sci fi and help bring it to the heathen masses that are ignorant of Asimovs law? or how about the sweet ass kickin space battles that next gen gave us or more classic moments like when Janet Frasier died in sg1......who saw that and did not blub?? I did!! and when Spock, Data, Billy, Starbuck, Ellen etc etc I cried like a baby all those times!! Caprica will rock as long as Ron Moore is still forging ahead with the story's after all this guy is a hero.....we was one of the trek gods who gave us yesterdays enterprise and so many other stories like the almighty All Good Things!!! Let us not bicker on the petty small things let us all praise the gods for giving us another chance to see the bsg universe in the reimagined glory! SO SAY WE ALL!! SO SAY WE ALL!! SO SAY WE ALL!! SO SAY WE ALL!! SO SAY WE ALL!!

By Guy Mayhew at 6:40 PM ON 03/16/10

Caprica's environment reminds me of a brightly lit Total Recall 2070. Even the opening sequences are similar!
