Shields up! RED ALERT!
Our pals over at TrekMovie.com have scored the first images of props from J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek movie, which are on display now at the CES show in Las Vegas.
The props include Kirk's communicator (above) and Uhura's earpiece (after the jump), which update the look of the original series props but capture their general shape and spirit, as well as McCoy's medical tricorder (there's some question about what we see at CES).
Uhura's earpiece appears to be relatively faithful to the design of that thing that Nichelle Nichols used to stick in her ear.
The props are on display by Paramount's promotional partner Lenovo. Star Trek opens May 8. Click through to see more.

I'd wager the purported tricorder is actually the handheld scanner that Bones uses with his tricorder. (an updated version of the updated salt shaker0

My guess is that the supposed tricorder is actually a hypospray.

Either way, I actually own a phaser from the original series, and the sucker weighs a ton! My momma had the biggest collection of Star Trek paraphernalia west of the Mississippi. Now that she has passed on, I'm supposed to sell the collection in order to send my niece to college. I sure hope that the economy improves a little before the release, as I plan to put up a website for the collection at the same time.

The Tricorder reminds me a bit of the old Dr. Who Sonic Screwdriver, just clunkier.

I guess it didn't occur to the film makers that these props had already been designed Forty three years ago.
They could have saved a bunch of money and made some fans happy by simply using the original designs.
Oh but I guess then it would not have been JJ's baby.
