Disney has picked relatively new actor Garrett Hedlund to star in Tron, the studio's sequel to the 1982 cult classic by the same name being directed by Joseph Kosinski, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Hedlund, who made his debut in 2004's Troy, also played one of the title siblings in Four Brothers and was a supporting player in Eragon.
Disney cast a wide net as it searched for the role, which, because of the title, generated a lot of interest. Such potential leads as Ryan Gosling and Chris Pine met on the project, while Michael Stahl-David (Cloverfield) was one of the those who screen-tested.
Hedlund will play the lead, a man who finds himself pulled into the world of a computer and retracing the steps of a character from the original movie named Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges). Bridges is reprising the role of Flynn, who was a computer programmer but ended up as the chief executive of a software corporation. Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett have also been cast in the project, which was known as Tron 2.0 and TR2N, but it now going by the simple Tron.
Sean Bailey is producing along with Steven Lisberger, who co-wrote and directed the original film, and Jeff Silver. The movie is eyeing a spring shoot.

They seriously are calling it simply "Tron?" Am I the only one who finds that incredibly stupid? Tron 2.0 would have been perfect, not only because it was a logical choice for a movie based in the cyber world, but also because it would have paid tribute to the awesome computer game that Monolith produced! C'mon Disney, get your heads out of your rears!

So Disney pulled out of the Narnia franchise which is based on a fantasy classic with a huge following but they're willing to sink a fortune in a sequel to Tron? Am I missing something? Has been some demand to a sequel to Tron?
Like every other geek, I waited in line for the Star Wars prequels, the Lord of the Rings, and the fourth Indian Jones. However, those are icons of science fiction and fantasy history. Tron was footnote. Tron was 90 minutes of Bruce Boxleitner and Jeff Bridges running around in spandex, playing with glow-in-the-dark Frisbees.

You call yourself a geek, MHC, and yet claim that Tron was a footnote in sci-fi history? On what do you base this? Most sci-fi geeks I know have Tron somewhere on their list of sci-fi movies that influenced them. I include it in my top ten. Ok, so it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's not fair to call it a footnote either. Thousands of fans have been waiting for the sequel for age.
Something completely different: Hate the new look, guys. Why'd you mess with something that wasn't broke?
