Paramount's massive marketing campaign for J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek includes a new partnership with auto insurer Esurance in a Web site with video interviews with cast and crew, a "Biggest Trekkie Contest From Esurance," wallpapers and other content to be added later.
Fans are asked to create a short video explaining what makes them the "Galaxy's Biggest Trekkie" and upload it for a chance to win a trip for two to the film's Hollywood premiere. The contest ends March 5; Star Trek opens May 8.

I don't know about you guys, but I stand at full attention when the title song plays every Trek episode (with the exception of Enterprise...I just hold a cigarette lighter in the air).
By Eli at 12:40 AM ON 01/31/09
Can we say "flop city"? If you think the last trek film was bad, wait until this one hits. I've been a Trek fan for YEARS, and I've no plans to see this POS.
By DarkHawke at 3:25 AM ON 01/31/09
That'll be your loss, Eli. Me, as a lifelong [42 years and counting] Trekkie, I'm lovin' everything I've seen about this new movie. Sure, it could turn out sucky, but it LOOKS thrilling as hell. I have only one wish for Mr. Abrams and Co.: make Star Trek cool again, will ya? Methinks they're up to the task!
By Fox at 6:09 AM ON 01/31/09
Eli, by definition here is, no matter how bad one may think a part of Star Trek is (or may be) a true 'Fan' will still see it because they are a 'Fan', the word 'Fan' come from 'Fanatic' meaning you, Eli, are not a fan and you have no place in this contest.
By Rob at 7:43 AM ON 01/31/09
Eli is 100% right. This upcoming travesty is not Star Trek. It's like saying an Elvis impersonator really is Elvis Presley. A true fan will be offended. I am truly a Star Trek fan & am indeed offended by this mockery.

After everything iv'e heard, seen and enjoyed about Star Trek, i believe I have reached the "fandom" level of Star Trek. IMO, I think Abrahms has done a fine job with the story, and has stayed pretty close to the source material. Be happy with what they'll get right and quit complaining about what they "may" get wrong. Besides, i have the TOS on dvd and if i wanna see special effects that were semi-cool in the 60's ill watch the dvds. I think the new look captures the old series and bridges the gap to the movies pretty darn well. Grow up peeps. Oh, iv'e seen everything trek in the last 30 years of my life, so i speak from experience.

I haven't seen a nerd fight this big since the Phantom Menace! I can almost smell the BO and Jolt Cola now!
By Bobanort at 11:32 AM ON 01/31/09
I still think the TOS Enterprise could beat the Reimagined Battlestar Galactica!!
By Rob at 12:53 PM ON 01/31/09
Rob Wampum, if that's the case, please take your monthly shower & put your Jolt cans in a trash bag & take them to the recycling center so you can earn your weekly dollar.

If that's the case, Rob Wampum, I suggest you take your monthly shower & put your empty Jolt cans in a trash bag & take them to the recycling center to earn your weekly dollar.

Seriously, you can take a Pinto & call it a Mustang, but it will never be a Mustang. Sorry for the double-posting above, the severe weather throughout the region has played havoc with phone lines & computers lately.

Fox, what yo say is offensive and extremely narrow minded and I strongly disagree with you. The fact is you CAN be a fan of something and not like everything in relation to it. Fanatics come in all shapes and sizes and sometimes someone is a fanatic for focussing on one small aspect of a whole. There is no clear cut cookie cutter shape for 'fan.' You haven't the right or authority to tell anyone that they are not a true fan.
I am a fan of Tim Burton. That does not obligate me to like his remake of Planet of the Apes. I am a fan of Anne Rice's writing. That does not obligate me to like Blood Canticle. It's okay to dislike or not take part in the aspect of the art you are a fan of.
What you are saying reminds me of one of those little girls back in the eighties who in the COMMERCIALS would say 'I'm the biggest Backstreet boy's fan because I have the doll of my favourite one.' And another girl goes 'I am the biggest fan because I have all of them!' And yet another little girl goes 'Oh, yeah! Well, I have the stage!' And the commercial ended with something to the effect of 'How big of a fan are you?'
Being a fan does not obligate you to fall for every aspect of the fan-verse. If that was true than most Trek and Star Wars fans wouldn't be able to afford milk for all the storage of their collectibles. And what about fans of Doctor Who? There is always some incarnation that a Whovian did not like or did not watch. I feel your definition of fan was very immaturely elitist and fringed on snobbery rather than fan zeal.

I love how feisty some of you get whenever this movie is mentioned. Two points: 1. It's not out yet and you haven't seen it so shut up with the judgments either way. 2. It's a movie, hence it's part of a business. It isn't real and was only ever concocted to make money. Get over it.
PS - to SFW - why is it the Captcha says I enter the wrong text string every single time I post here, then lets me thru the second time?
By WannaBeatle at 10:46 PM ON 01/31/09
I dunno about the rest of ya, but I actually am anxious to see this one. I try to have lowered expectations for movies in general.
I don't know a thing about the cast..I've never watched Heroes, so I have no idea how good of an actor the young guy portraying Spock is. But, as long as the script and the story is strong, that should be the most important thing in the first place.
By Rob at 11:08 PM ON 01/31/09
Well, I for one am sure that this movie will suck. It lacks the elements that make Star Trek what it is: character relationships, quest for knowledge, exploring strange new worlds. JJ Abrams is all about fast paced action & sex scenes. That may work in his other tired shows, but it only sullies the image of something he can never truly grasp. He will never know what it is to be a true Trekker, & it is indeed his loss, as well as those who praise this upcoming waste of celluloid space.
By bluebberry_uk at 9:38 AM ON 02/01/09
Ok, i dont get it, how can some of you "fans" be so anti the new film? Its not even out yet, no-ones seen it, no-one know what is actually going to be like, yet you have all passed judgement and decided its a waste of space. Thats fine its your opinion and your entitled to it. I for one will wait until the film is released, watch it. then pass an opinion. So in the mean time keep yours to yourself!
By Rob at 10:15 AM ON 02/01/09
Bluebberry, you are the true definition of a hypocrite. You tell others to keep their oppinions to themselves while throwing yours around as if only you are entitled to. News for you, limey: If you don't like seeing anyone else's oppinions, don't vivit this site.
By j0e155 at 8:04 AM ON 02/02/09
I have my dissappoitments as well, but I think we all should be happy that our Beloved Star Trek is back on the Big Screen,
By bluebberry_uk at 2:54 PM ON 02/02/09
Rob - You make a fair point, but what i was trying to say was i dont see how anyone can say its a pile of steaming dung when its not even out yet. Should have left my keep your opinions to yourself bit out. Thanks for pointing out my hypocrisy.
By j0e155 at 3:58 AM ON 02/03/09
I don't disagree with you, I believe it should be seen before being judged,
By Nid at 1:41 PM ON 02/03/09
If the new Star Trek is good , it will mean that there is definitely a new generation of hollywood making films with old stories geared towards a more sophisticated viewer. I wish hollywood had a little more oriinality though.
If this Star Trek sucks, then chalk it up to hollywood making a disproportionate share of junk compared to any decent entertainment.
PS I will miss Battlestar. It marked a high point in SCIFIs programming. Before that I used to watch LEX with the firefly as a spaceship (my wife calls it something else) Now when Battlestar's gone there will be NOTHING to watch but that boring ghost hunter reality show and Stargate (how did that get so many incarnations?)

I think that if you were truly the "Biggest Trek Fan Ever", That you'd not even think about going to see this so called star trek movie. Let's face it Galaxy Quest was more of a star trek movie then what's coming in may.
By float_pilot at 9:52 PM ON 02/05/09
Seriously, get a grip people. I have been watching Trek my whole life, what I can remember of my 32 years, and I am excited as heck about this movie. Trek needs to be cool again. Fans are demanding more character depth and a grittier truer to life (as much as possible in sci-fi). Give it a chance. It's like saying that you wouldn't watch the new Battlestar because you liked the kitchy, cheesy original. Turned out to be one of the best shows ever! Just my opinion.
