J.J. Abrams, who directed the upcoming Star Trek reboot movie, addressed the film's new take on starship battles, redshirt deaths and character backstory. Abrams attended the Television Critics Association January press tour party for Fox, the network for which he produces Fringe, on Tuesday.
Earlier in the evening, screenwriter Roberto Orci described the battles as still maritime-influenced, despite the new, lavish look. Abrams clarified.
"They're big ships, so I'd say that there is a little bit of that, but there's a little bit more flash and fun and action than you've seen before," Abrams said in a group interview. "There are some pretty spectacular visual effects. ILM outdid themselves. It's amazing."
In scenes previewed for the press earlier in the year, Abrams revealed the very first redshirt death scene. Trek fans know that any supporting character in a red uniform is doomed on a planetside mission.
"Well, the guy sort of asks for it a little bit in that scene," Abrams joked.
A major change in Abrams' prequel is the portrayal of young Kirk as a reckless, bar-fighting rebel. On that note, Abrams admitted he was recruiting new Trekkers.
"I would say that the fans of Star Trek will be very happy with the movie," Abrams said. "It honors what's come before, but I didn't really make the movie just for the people who are already inside, because I like Star Trek but I was never a massive fan. So I think the movie's going to not satisfy everyone, of course. It can't. But it'll satisfy most of both."
Finally, Abrams addressed a YouTube video in which William Shatner claims he was never approached for a cameo in Abrams' film. He says he would have said no, but he was never even asked. Abrams saw where Shatner misunderstood the director's comments.
"I think what Mr. Shatner was responding to was a misunderstanding," Abrams said. "I was quoted as saying we tried to get him in the movie. What I meant was we were trying internally to find a way to take a dead character and resurrect him without it seeming lame. We couldn't figure out a way to do it. I think that when I said we tried to get him into the movie, he read it as if we were trying to call him. I would not have wasted his time with a bad idea." Star Trek opens May 8.

the sad thing is, no matter what anyone says i'll go see this movie, even though i only like 2-3 of the trek movies to date.

flash and fun? like wat, meaningless moving cameras in strange archs? people pushing buttons huu.... dramatically? and all the shallow stuff in action movies? is he going to (ahem) "jazz" it up. u can put a librarian in a pair of gogo boots, but they still wont fit her.
By thanatos at 5:03 PM ON 01/14/09
It's clear from the trailer that Abrams & Co just don't 'get it'. I went to the theater for ST:TMP and its 5 sequels as well as 2 of the 4 movies featuring the ST:TNG cast (and not much else). I'll see this one on NetFlix.

Is there anything that Adams can't screw up? Apparently not. Trekkies will be be wanting his hide for the damage he has done to the franchise.
By grincher at 5:09 PM ON 01/14/09
Take a breath, people. It's only a movie. A movie none of us have even seen, yet.
By jimspar at 5:16 PM ON 01/14/09
About that librarian in the gogo boots, you got any pictures? I mean..... I'm with Grincher, I'll make up my mind after I've seen it.

easy for you to say, you're not as attached to it as we are.

I've heard some the same whining about SciFi's Battlestar Galactica before the first episode aired. I've been a trek fan since the beginning. Loved DS9 hated Voyager, and barely made tit hrough Enterprise. At least give it a chance. J.J. is correct if the franchise is to survive you have look at new generation of audiences and adjust accordingly.
By Kerrith at 7:09 PM ON 01/14/09
I hope what he means by more flash and fun and action is that the ships maneuver in three dimensional space. The problem with combat in TOS amd ST TNG was that the ships were pretty static. The Enterprise and the enemy ship would get nose to nose on the same plane of space and then start pounding away at each other. We didn't actually see starships maneuvering in combat until the last season of DS9 and a few scenes in the movies.
Anyway, I have high hopes for this film. It really can't be any worse than Nemesis, a film entirely inspired by Star Wars with scenes on a desert planet, an imperial throne room and a planet destroying vessel, with a plot revolving around clones.
By cellalpha48 at 7:10 PM ON 01/14/09
lol.
Some of you people do make me laugh.
"Damage to the franchise" indeed, it's already as busted as it's going to get.
Good luck to JJ I say, it's about time we got some freshness injected into Trek.
By Turrok Nor at 7:26 PM ON 01/14/09
Look on the bright side people, it cant end up being as bas that new dr who series did - JJ has more talent and an actual vision - and he isnt stuck in the past like say Russel T Davies (he just made it like the old ones - cheesey, and special effects, constant old enemies all the time, alot of awful writing). So lets give it a chance at the least yeah ? at least JJ also admits it wont please everyone rather than saying everyone should worship him. oh and I dont like alot of his work either, but he isnt as bad as people make him out to be either.
All my opinions of course though :)

I've been a fan of Star Trek from NBC to Paramount, watched every incarnation and met many Trek actors and actresses. I've been through the confusion reading "I Am Not Spock" and again in "I Am Spock", read uncountable Star Trek novels, some awesome and some barely readable. But no matter what, I've always given each and every incarnation a chance to prove itself on it's own merit. If Star Trek can be "ruined", it would have been long ago because of differences and changes from series to series. I for one look forward to this new incarnation from the man who readily admits he's "not a fan", yet took on the project anyway. Give it a chance, people. You've gone to see much worse, and who knows... it may turn out to be much better than you think.

First off, I don't wear go go boots, never have never will. They don't come in men's sizes. Secondly, I have seen everything Trek since the sixties(I used to love go-go dancers). I hope this new Trek is not as big a turkey as Nemesis. What a sad send-off for the Next Gen crew. At least Nimoy is in this one to lend it some credibility. I like some of JJ's work, like Fringe and Cloverfield and am willing to see this thing with an open mind.
By AdmNaismith at 9:11 PM ON 01/14/09
I was fine with what I was hearing about the movie until the parallel universe stuff came up. I just hope we won't need someone to come in and mop up a la Enterprise's 4th season.
By Frankjad at 10:37 PM ON 01/14/09
Good or bad, I'll treat it as a sci-fi flick, not as a Star Trek movie.
Fact is, Star Trek didn't have to be reimagined.
ST is a huge universe with huge potential. How about a new cast set 50 years after ST:TNG?
Or a movie about the Romulan War?
The novels have great ideas. ST: Vanguard, Peter David's Excalibur series are a good start.
So much originality and freshness to work with and instead we get -
"uh...geez...what 'bout a reboot, yup, yup, nothin' new here..."
Very sad.
Wake me when Hollywood really comes up with something new.
By Anthony at 11:14 PM ON 01/14/09
Yes it makes me laugh to see people bagging on JJ when Star trek couldn't be deader after what Berman/Braga did to it..those last 2 movies weren't as good as a lot of the season's mediocre episodes. I think JJ is going to have a nice success story with this movie. I can't wait.
By TrekGuru at 12:00 AM ON 01/15/09
Folks, shame on you all that whine Star Trek will be ruined or damaged or tarnished because of JJ's efforts. If you think you can do a better job then he and also (now this is the kicker) re-energize the franchise, please impress us with your mastery of Trek film making. Blow our socks off with original writing that did not come from someone else. Yes it would be cool if some of the other books in the Trek world came to the screen but you first have to start from the beginning if this effort is going to be done right. If things go to plan and the movie is a hit, I am sure there will be other projects and who knows. There may be a show done like Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. Just be happy something is being tried to give us folks that love Trek a cool thing to watch.
By gateman62 at 2:08 AM ON 01/15/09
Come on lets face it the original series while good was incredibly corny. DS9 sucked until the last couple of seasons they killed the next generation with the last two movies and voyager and enterprise was a last attempt to get people to watch star trek if Abrams can make a good science fiction movie as well as keep the story aspect as close to the original vision of the late Gene Roddenberry then i cant understand y some people are already bagging on it i mean all u have seen is the trailer which in all honestly looks ridiculously awesome and action packed. I'm glad j.j is up to the task to give life to star trek again!
By Iknwtrek at 2:19 AM ON 01/15/09
I don't like that the ships are built on the surface of earth. Kirks father a starship captain for only 12 mins??? I don't mind the casting but too many changes to Star Trek history. what about Codos the Executioner? I wonder if they even bothered. I hope they at least keep the theme music and do the opening credits the same. I wonder if they will have Joanna McCoy in there somewhere? How about a young Sybok?
By Red_Alert at 4:54 PM ON 01/15/09
I have to say from the start I am not a fan of JJ Abrams. Why should I be? He has repeatd over and over agian he is not a Star Trek fan. He has stated many times he is not making this film for the fans. He has taken every opportunity to mess around with canon and even changed the design of the USS Enterprise!!! He wants more action like Star Wars. He just does not get Star Trek. No matter how much he wants to stop fans from pointing out his mistakes everyone already knows he has done more harm than good to the franchise.

I have been very impressed with Abrams work in television. The shows may seem cheesy but the characters have so many levels you have to remind yourself of the back story. I love that. I also read too, so the same thing does happen books as well. I am looking forward to his version of Star Trek and the resurrection of James T. Kirk. The Trailers look awesome. My favorite Trek Series was the one with the shortest series and the most recent. Star Trek Enterprise has Characters with real problems in an imperfect-space. Too many of the past shows look too perfect or too much like paradise. I guess I think it is time for real people to show up in a Star Trek film..JJ's characters will be real!
By Popeyecove at 7:19 PM ON 01/15/09
This movie might stink. It might ROCK. Who knows... until you see it.
The trailer looks great, and yeah, there are some blatant liberties taken with the details. But so what? It's fantasy, a movie. It's supposed to be fun. I can't wait to see this film. Oh, and I've been a trekker since 1973.
By Gatchaman at 9:25 PM ON 01/15/09
I'll only like this movie if Scott Bakula plays Archer, Jolene Blalock played T'Pol, or William Shatner plays Kirk. Otherwise, forget it.

I am a life long Trekie and sci-fi junkie, I own all of Trek on DVD and even its lower caliber episodes still knock the boots off any 99.9% of the crap that’s on television today. Face it, main stream America and the rest of the world don’t want anything that takes thought or connecting the dots, they would much rather have mindless reality tv shows, trashy dramas and unimaginative sitcoms. I am a bit skeptical after seeing the new Trailer, the special effects look good, but that’s not why we love Trek, it’s the deep stories, the connections to current issues we are facing today and how we can grow as a whole and better humanity. It’s taking the familiar problems we face today and dressing them up and putting them on a much bigger back drop. I will personally wait until I have seen the movie before I pass judgment and give JJ the benefit of the doubt. I am glad to see that he is paying homage to the original uniforms with a bit of updating as to the fabric. I am still personally going to the midnight showing in full classic command gold uniform, boots, phasser communicator and tricorder and hoping for the best, jolan'tru =A=

You people need to get a grip! I don't care what he changes. I love the "idea" of Star Trek and if what he does with this movie "rescues" the franchise. Then so be it! For those that want Star Trek to stay exactly as it was.. well we all know that did not work. I have no problem with the update. I have seen every episode of every star trek show and ever movie. I have also read many of the books. I am looking forward to this movie.
Thanks JJ!!

can i just ask people to stop telling us nay sayers to get a grip, get over it, and the like? i dont think we're insane, or all spastic, or out of control. we just disagree. that's no reason to tell someone to get a grip or get over it. we are expressing our opinions just like you are expressing your opinions. no one's being an extremist. speaking your mind is quite sane.

I'm embarassed that I share my 37 year love for Star Trek with canon zealots and doctinaire drumbeaters. Well canon kooks, live in your sad little pasts if you must, but for me there is a new world of Trek coming and I'm going to embrace the shiny new Trek future, and will be thankful that I can still watch and enjoy the fantasy world of Trek without becoming ensnared within it.
Mr Abrams, for you sir I offer a fond four fingered Vulcan salute. To the the Canon Cranks, however, I offer just one finger.....

Xevious makes a good point. I've been a fan since the first season's first run on NBC, and have read "The Making of Star Trek," "The Making of DS9," any number of episode adaptations, and several (auto-)biographies/memoirs of the cast and crew of various Trek incarnations. I read Ellison's original "City on the Edge of Forever" draft script. I've been to legendary cons and some of the cheesier ones. I even got to go to the sendoff party for TNG by winning a TV Guide contest, back in the 1990s. BUT everything I know and love about the show and those who made it I got primarily by simply paying attention when watching, reading, or listening. It's not my life; I have one, thanks. For me, Trek has been a wonderful entertainment and a great object lesson about how to get worthwhile science fiction onto television and into the movies. But stories are retold and retooled all the time in literature. I've read and reread several retellings of the ancient Greco-Roman and Norse myths. All versions have had unique virtues to recommend them, most included some aspects that my mind's ear heard as "false notes." Oh well. Star Trek is mythology of our time, capable of both inspiring multiple interpretations AND surviving the most ham-fisted of them.
I have fun watching Lost and Fringe, and they give me something to think about, as well. I thought the re-booting of Mission Impossible was a travesty and refused to watch anything after the first installment of that latest Tom Cruise "franchise." If Abrams and Co. bring us a new ST in the same way that they brought us a new MI, then this will be my last Trek movie for a while. But I will at least watch this first prequel, in hopes that it thrills me as Lost and Fringe have more recently done. It's only fair to give JJA and friends their chance. I do wish that someone would do a movie featuring DS9 characters, though. It's been rude of Paramount to leave Captain Sisko adrift in the wormhole, with only the inscrutable Prophets for company. Aside from the original series, DS9 had the most layered and well developed set of characters of any Trek, in my opinion, and I often find myself missing them, while viewing much lesser-quality SF on TV.
