Now you can vote on whether George Lucas should retire

Now you can vote on whether George Lucas should retire

Cinematical took our post that says George Lucas should retire and turned it into a vote-along.

So far it looks like more people want him to retire than not (see, Jenna told you so!), but the voting has just started, so the tide may turn. Since 14 percent of voters would like to see Lucas fight to the death with Uwe Boll, we're not sure how reliable the Cinematical constituency is.

Yes, RETIRE! And take those ridiculous 'Special Editions' with you...as well as Jar Jar!

By tensensi at 10:10 PM ON 01/07/09

what's wrong with you? focus on the good he's brought to us! i still want to see episodes 7, 8, and 9!

By Dave at 11:30 PM ON 01/07/09

Are you kidding???? This guy changed cinema. If you are under 30 your vote just does NOT count!!!! You are a bunch of spoiled children who don't know what movies were before Lucas introduced us to so much!!!! You have NO idea what movies were like before George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Go play XBox and shoot aliens and bad guys. The Internet should have an IQ requirement before you are allowed to post. Most of you dumbnuts couldn't make it!

By freehandlucke at 11:57 PM ON 01/07/09

So because he changed cinema it's not okay to say his movies have not been good? Spielberg made awesome movies too, just none lately. I doubt if neither of them made another movie again, it would have much impact on cinema today.

Fight to the death with Uwe Boll. I love it. Uwe Boll wins.

Actually the whole pack of cartoon makers, Muppet manipulators and the rest (majority) of Hollywood produced product for the Christmas Crowd (sales tie-ins or absolutely juvenile productions) can join him.

I love the people who immediately opt for censorship. I'm 25, so what? I've seen all the Star Wars, I've played almost all the games, although I have no action figures, I have the DVDs, the scores and about half the games at home. And it might make some people sorry to hear this but the best things to come out of SW recently are the Jedi Knight and Knights of the Old Republic series.

Yes, George Lucas did much to shape cinema as we know it today. Hell, he even did it recently, pushing digital projection and for which I give thanks. But his time of great cinematics is over. And frankly, Spielberg's too. Lucas' last good piece of artistic work was Return of the Jedi. Spielberg's, Taken.

I'm not saying, "Take a hike, old man" but I'm saying "Thank you very much but you've lost your touch. It's time to step down as writer/director." And it might sound weird to hear this, it was weird when I said it first, but while Lucas and Spielberg are declining, Uwe Boll is improving. If his first movies were a god-awful, "It's like a car crash" mess, Dungeon Siege was bearable. I don't see Lucas or Spielberg doing another Star Wars or Close Encounters but maybe, in a decade or so, Uwe Boll might produce something worth watching.

So let them fight.

Yes, he should. I don't want to see CGI gophers and talking robots with funny voices as taking precedence over a good story and dialogue - something which he seems to lack.

"It's because I'm so in love with you!"
"NO IT'S BECAUSE I'M SO IN LOVE WITH YOU!"

.... no. Please. Spare us.

By Yoda at 3:39 PM ON 01/08/09

Write episodes 7, 8 and 9 he should. Then retire he should.

Direct he should not.

By The Fanch at 12:01 AM ON 01/09/09

Please, GO AWAY now!!! "You made us laugh, you made us cry, you made us feel like we could fly, Rad.. "eh, Georgie. But you like money SO much and you've made this 1st trilogy-prequel-for retarded so universally puerile & ridiculous.
How could you? You wanna sell a lot of toys & stuff? Right. But stop pretending to be an artist and let others (directors, pencillers, writers,...) do the job in the SW Expanded Universe. I Thank you and wish you a happy retirement for the dreams you (and your collaborators from that time) gave me with Star Wars, Empire SB and ROT Jedi. Bye!!!

By AdmNaismith at 12:07 AM ON 01/09/09

He doesn't need to retire, so much as let other do the heavy lifting. After coming up with the Big Ideas, let other people write and direct and te other stuff YOU'RE NOT VERY GOOD AT.

By Crazydog7 at 2:38 AM ON 01/09/09

Let other people do the work bow out gracefully and go home and sleep on your pile of money.

By Zorro 6 at 1:04 PM ON 01/09/09

No, he shouldn't retire until he's ready to. If you don't like his new stuff, simple solution: don't go see it. (And as an added benefit, stop whining so much about it).

By Nathan Brazil at 1:44 PM ON 01/11/09

To the person who said votes of over 30's don't count, kid, I was watching Star Wars when you were still wetting your nappie. Lucas 'borrowed' so much from SF literature, SW could never be called original. Where the guy was smart, was in being the first to see the potential of merchandising. But now he should shuffle off stage gracefully, and stop flogging his dead horse.

By SiliconAddict at 6:36 PM ON 01/11/09

The guy may have changed cinima but if Picasso robbed a bunch of banks and killed people near the end of his life you don't forgive someone for for future FUBARs just because he did some wonderful initial work. The fact of the matter is Lucas is guilty of what many artists do: they don't know when to stop. They don't know when that last brush stroke is just too much. Lucas, sadly, is the kid in the candy shop with an unlimited budget. Do you think other directors and producers haven't wanted to go back to their work after it was done because new tech is available? But they didn't because they weren't in control; the studio was. I fully expect Lucas to continue to frack around with the original 3 for decades to come because he can and because new tech will come out.

By Invisigoth at 4:24 PM ON 01/13/09

Shut up, Patrick! Jenna Busch is a hack and so are you. No TRUE Star Wars fanatic would ever want George Lucas to "retire". So, shut your face!

By jayenterprise10 at 6:38 PM ON 01/19/09

The only people who should retire are the ones who come up with ideas like this.

By Haze at 2:12 PM ON 02/03/09

I agree with the writer. Maybe it is time. I believe that Empire was the best of the Series and he didn't even direct it (or jedi, if I remember correctly). He ideas were great. He changed Sci-fi forever. So maybe it is time.
