The BBC reported that the cult sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf will return to TV, 21 years after its initial launch, and will appear on the digital channel Dave in the United Kingdom for a two-part Easter-weekend special.
In the special, the cast finally return to Earth. Written and directed by Red Dwarf co-creator Doug Naylor, the new show reunites the original cast, including Coronation Street's Craig Charles.
It's unclear when or where the special would air in North America.
The hit show ran for eight series on BBC Two between 1988 and 1999. Set 3 million years in the future, the show followed the exploits of Dave Lister, slovenly crew member of the mining ship Red Dwarf—and the last man in the universe.
He was joined in his weekly attempts to make it back to Earth by a cast of oddballs including human hologram Arnold Rimmer, mechanoid servant Kryten and Cat—a preening half-man, half-animal who evolved from the ship's cat.
The new two-part series Red Dwarf: Back to Earth will be followed by a "no holds barred" episode without sets or special effects. The weekend will climax with Red Dwarf: The Making of Back to Earth, a behind-the-scenes special from the new episodes.

Wow. I LOVED Red Dwarf back in the day... even though it kinda died out towards the latter episodes (which I still haven't seen).
Nice to know there will be an end to this fantastically funny series. Any news on when this will air?

Thats fantastic! I love this show and it should be given an ending..or maybe a NEW beginning? Lets just hope they let us fans across the pond view it as well.

Finally!! Lister gets to taste real chicken vindaloo again. I second the NEW beginning idea as long as J.J. Abrams stays away from it.

If I had to rank my favorite science fiction TV series of all time, Red Dwarf would be on my top five -- up there with Babylon 5, ST:TNG, X-Files, and ST:DS9. I can still hear the theme music...It's cold outside no kind of atmosphere...

They don't make it back to earth. They make it back to a parallel earth, and realize (after being there awhile) that in order to make it back to the original earth, they have to enter an anomaly (which they unknowingly entered at the beginning of part 1 . When they exit, they find out that they are millions of light years away from earth again, so the series continues.... This is only my opinion, and I find myself to be a pretty good guesser. For example, in Doctor Who's Voyage of the Damned episode, everyone thought that the original, historic Titanic crashed through the TARDIS' hull (cliff hanger at "The Last of the Time Lords"). But, I figured out that it was really a spaceship, because no water came gushing or seeping in. So, I am just guessing that the Earth Red Dwarf finds is parallel, because the writers and producers would need to continue the show some how.

It's about SMEGGING TIME!!!!!! I've been a Dwarfer for years and wished the Inquister had come to get me when the show ended with another cliffhanger.
Maybe this what is need to finally get the Sci Fi Channel to show Red Dwarf. They need something great to fill the void left by Battlestar Galacita. If they don't, we'll get Mr.
Flibbal on them. Sci Fi Channel give us Red Dwarf!!!!
