Say it ain't so, motherf--ker!
Samuel L. Jackson tells the Los Angeles Times that he may not play Nick Fury in Marvel's anticipated Avengers movie and other films, even after doing a cameo at the end of Iron Man.
The reason? Money.
Here's how the newspaper reported it:
Jackson, clearly bristling, told the newspaper that negotiations to put him in the role of Nick Fury have broken down because "there seems to be an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics world."
It now appears that "somebody else will be Nick Fury, or maybe Nick Fury won't be in it" when it comes to Iron Man 2, The First Avenger: Captain America and The Avengers, the announced slate of Marvel Studios projects through 2011 that might have a natural spot for the character.
Fan favorite Jackson was actually used as the model for the Ultimate Marvel version of Fury, which took the white, grizzled, aging commando with salt-and-pepper hair and re-imagined him as a younger, bald African American.
"I saw [Iron Man 2 director] Jon Favreau at the Scream Awards, and we had a conversation. He said, 'I hope things are working out for you, because we're writing stuff for you.' Then all of a sudden last week I talked to my agents and manager, and things aren't really working that well," Jackson reportedly said.
For its part, Marvel told the paper that they still want to see Jackson wearing Fury's eyepatch. "Marvel does not comment on active negotiations," was the boilerplate response, but there was an emphasis on the word "active" in the voice of the spokesman, the newspaper reported.
Stay tuned!

I know this will be heresy to most, but amen on this turn of events. Jackson only plays Jackson in his films. The Spirit was unbearable to watch. I kept waiting for him to yell, "I've had it with these motherf***ing snakes on this motherf***ing plane!" Avengers, and Iron Man 2 (if he was to be cast), will be stronger and more legitimate without him.

Jackson damaged his name by doing a number of under performing films--films, that were very bad, at that. His name means nothing at the box office anymore, as he is no longer a viable box office draw. Case in point, The Spirit...or how about Snakes On A Plane, or Black Snake Moan, Shaft...and the list goes on and on.

as long as Hasselhoff does NOT make the cut, motherf--kers!

Sam is so good, that he has fans that dont care if he does a bad film or a few. any actor does a bad show. you dont damn them for it. they're human, mistakes includes. plus we know he can do this character. he's done the like with a tour de force.
im rooting for him. and because he's a great actor. i believe the reason people associate him so much with the Pulp Fiction "mutherf^(ker" bit is because he acted it perfect. THAT is his ability. not to say mutherfer, but to act.

Uber Critic: WTF? Black Snake Moan was a good flick. Shaft was entertaining. marvel is sitting on a gold mine and they're being stingy. They can afford to throw Sam some coin.

It's probably a good thing. Jackson is an OK actor, don't get me wrong; But, he is not right for Nick Fury. I can't think of anyone off hand who would be better, but he is just NOT Nick Fury. His characters are all the same persona. He just isn't flexible enough as an actor to do Fury justice. Let's hope Marvel can find someone better.

I think the thing with Jackson is it's hard to see his charcter without seeing Jackson first. The SW prequels, Iron Man...he is a good actor, but that is my problem with him. That being said, I would hate to see them recast Fury.

As a comic book fan first, I think the troubling part of that story is the money problems from Marvel. With their history of ridiculous management practices, I would be more afraid of Marvel going through another bankruptcy and not having any of their films come out until the rights are settled by whatever movie company buys them.

I love Sam Jackson and all, but there is an economic crisis in the real world. That comment really doesn't come off well.

I'd prefer to keep Fury out of the flick altogether. It seemed more like a publicity stunt to begin with when they made the classic "white" character that's been around for decades suddenly become a young black man. It would have been easier to create a new character rather than replace an existing one.
By budgethero at 3:44 PM ON 01/14/09
there are a few very notable afro americans in the marvelverse, but for the most part, it's a bunch of white people. really think about it, what is the ratio of white to black people in the marvelverse?

that's fine with me its time we told these actors that there not all that and the preveble bag of chips and if they want turn down an instently famous role fine and some one else will get the fame and glory . some times money is not as important as what you do

Didn't Terrence Howard bow out of the Ironman sequel over money as well? What is going on at Marvel?

Does anyone remember a time whereby people played in movies because they liked doing that? They weren't so greedy? I'm thinking Mr. Jackson might not. He's good, but if he thinks "I've got them right where I want them", no problem, find someone else.
By tidalwarrior at 10:50 PM ON 01/15/09
I usually hate it when they recast a character but his greed will be a better outcome for the movies. There are many actors that would be a better choice than him.

please, please, do not let samuel l jackson be nick fury..i mean comeon...seriously they should get henry rollins to be nick fury!
By stonecutter2001 at 5:11 PM ON 01/18/09
I had always thought that Charleton Heston would have been a great Nick Fury. How about Martin Sheen, with Charlie playing the younger version?
By ironsandwich at 7:26 PM ON 01/18/09
He's a veteran actor with a lot of box office draw. He's been in starring roles in both critically acclaimed movies and box office block busters. Oh yeah and a couple of bombs but the fact is...Mace Windu is a Jedi and the force is with him so give him enough cash to make the eye patch worth his time.

I think it's important for all of us to remember comics are the ultimate expression of adventure imagination. They belong to us-
From a $2 comic to a $8 movie ticket let's not loose sight of the fact that it's an outside genre that's allowing it self to be prostituted supposedly for our pleasure. This is not about SLJ or any of the other actors who are getting screwed it's about hollywood &Marvels greed. Everybody take it easy enjoy these movies because we earned the. The studios and comic companies will get it right. Pay the damn actors. Besides there's nothing like a happy wellpaid prostitute!
