Stargate Universe crew is cast, led by Hidden Hills' Justin Louis

\<i\>Stargate Universe\<\/i\> crew is cast, led by \<i\>Hidden Hills\<\/i\>\' Justin Louis

Justin Louis

SCI FI Channel announced the casting of Justin Louis, David Blue, Brian J. Smith and Jamil Walker Smith in its upcoming original series Stargate Universe. The four join Robert Carlyle, who will play Dr. Nicholas Rush in the latest adventure in the Stargate franchise, which is produced by MGM television.

Production will begin in Vancouver, Canada, in February with an eye toward a fall premiere.

Edgier and younger in tone than the two previous series, Stargate Universe follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth.

Justin Louis (Hidden Hills) will portray Col. Everett Young, an experienced Stargate team leader. Married, with years of tough decisions under his belt, Young has learned never to take anything for granted and stays on top of his team so they remain alive.

David Blue (Ugly Betty) stars as Eli Wallace, a total slacker who just happens to be an utter genius with anything he puts his mind to: mathematics, computers, video games. A lack of confidence has left him with an acerbic sense of humor.

Brian J. Smith is Lt. Matthew Scott, a junior member of the Stargate team. Green and rough around the edges, he is thrust into the role of leader well before he's ready for the responsibility and must learn to command, earn respect through action and manage the diverse personalities aboard the ship.

Jamil Walker Smith will portray Sr. Sgt. Ronald Greer, a Marine with a temper you don't want to mess with. His past is mysterious, but it's clear something dark formed the hard shell around him.

Brad Wright and Robert Cooper of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.

Interesting new cast! Thank you, Patrick, for the update!

By Alex at 3:37 AM ON 01/16/09

hmmm I'm skeptical but I really hope it works out. I love Stargate and want to see the series suceed.

By RangerPrimeX at 4:18 AM ON 01/16/09

Stargate: Voyager
I am skeptical.. Will a replicator join the crew after a season on two.

By WShawn at 4:50 AM ON 01/16/09

I don't know. I was happy with SG:Atlantis. I'd really come to enjoy the characters and their interactions, even though the plots weren't always the most original. Then you get an episode like "Vegas", which was really fun.

And I really really hate seeing Jewel Staite unemployed again.

So with SG: Universe you're combining what will probably be rehashed plots with characters I don't care about. But I'll probably watch.

By Chris at 7:01 AM ON 01/16/09

Bring back Firefly...puts on brown coat

By gdog42 at 7:37 AM ON 01/16/09

So the black guy plays the tough Marine with a temper....no reason he would play the scientist or the leader....because that's what black actors are good for ...aliens and laconic tough guys ...way to go Stargate..as usual

By Tom Garner at 8:08 AM ON 01/16/09

Doesn't this sound like the beginning of Voyager? Pls tell me that this series isn't solely based upon them getting back to Earth?

By Ozzie at 8:55 AM ON 01/16/09

What!?!?!?!? No hottie on the this team of explorers. Lame.

By Heather Johnson at 9:19 AM ON 01/16/09

yeah, I agree with the other commentors ... this sounds A LOT like ST Voyager ... not to say that I won't watch it, but come on now!

By lrdapoc at 10:05 AM ON 01/16/09

Well.. do these Canadians know there is no such rank as Sr. Sgt in the Marine Corps? At least in the USMC... GySGT maybe or Staff Sgt. Good research guys!

By Xtine at 10:33 AM ON 01/16/09

Reminds me of ST Voyager and Farscape. I did not see any female characters. Why is that? I love SciFi and I have always found this genre to be the best in creating great female characters. Maybe the Ancient ship has its own crew the STU crew will work with that will include females.

Right now, the ONLY reason why I plan to watch is because of Robert Carlyle. Great actor. However, I would LOVE for Farscape and/or SGA to return instead. Ben Browder is great as Crichton.

By Arend at 10:46 AM ON 01/16/09

As I read the above texst esspecialy the second part about the beginning of stargate universe, I did see simularity's to a other greath scifi series created in the year 1978 and playing untill 1981, the series Blake's 7 could that be thrue?

By varrior at 11:11 AM ON 01/16/09

You know, I'm probably going to end up watching this series anyway, but what the hell is it with the stereotypical breakdown of characters? The tough no-nonsense marine, the nerd scientist, the hot chick, and the tough quiet tank (teal'c/ronon). Do they ever have an original idea?

By Giavs at 11:14 AM ON 01/16/09

How about something along the lines of SG-Atlantis ep Aurora...where the ship's crew is in status and the SG crew needs to interact accordingly. The ship always having some issues where the SG crew needs to act independently for the most part. There viewers could have their hotties, hunks and some sort in "purpose" to being on a long voyage to nowhere....

By Mike at 11:55 AM ON 01/16/09

Dump Brad Wright and Robert Cooper as producers and bring in Ron Moore. Now I'd totally watch that show.

By tuvok at 12:17 PM ON 01/16/09

SO I LEARNED 2 THINGS TODAY:

1.BLACK ACTORS CAN ONLY PLAY ALIENS AND ANGRY SGTS IN A STARGATE SERIES

2.BLACK ACTORS CANNOT PORTRAY DR WHO

By Jim at 12:59 PM ON 01/16/09

Series ended lots to early. Lots left undeveloped ? Hope this new Universe is not a let down! Think we could have done better with the crew cast.

By VOLTRON at 2:59 PM ON 01/16/09

Very unimpressive credentials for the cast. All the characters seem very stereotypical. Not having the stereotypical hot chick is one thing that I personally always welcome though, which is missing. I will watch this because I am a Sci-Fi fiend, but really, what was wrong with Farscape, SG1 or Atlantis. If ratings weren’t good enough to keep the show then what do they think this cheap knock off show will do?

By rafe at 3:43 PM ON 01/16/09

Ditto the other commenters, why must all of the black/brown people on Stargate be exclusively warriors? It's a bad joke!! Didn't most people learn about the noble savage stereotype in highschool English class?

Where are the black/brown scientists, doctors, etc.?

Atlantis is a good enough show but look at how Ronan is portrayed. He can't write a report. Instead he's made to record monosyllabic words for a quick report.

No stereotype there. Nope. None whatsoever.

Where are the Asians? The show will be filmed in Canada right? Aren't there lots of Asians and Native Canadians/Americans there???

Latinos? Nowhere to be seen.

Why cancel Atlantis? Greed? Kill the show before the cast can ask for much deserved raises?

(Hell, Atlantis couldn't even give Lt. Ford a decent conclusion to his story. Did he live or die on the Wraith ship? Who knows??)

And, what about women? There are no women in the cast. The character of Samantha Carter was an excellent mix of brains over sex appeal. It was obvious that Sam was on the team because of her brains.

Of course, let's not even consider anyone gay. DADT! Since it's an all-male cast trapped on a ship, maybe we'll find something about one or two of them? ;-)

Whoops! I get it now! Eureka has two black/mixed-race people as scientists. Battlestar has a female South Asian cylon, so that's good enough for non-warrior.

Meh, I'll watch the show to support the Sci-Fi channel if the plot is good but will complain if

By shane at 7:09 PM ON 01/16/09

for the love of god they havent cast the women in the show yet that will be anounced they have them cast...stop whining about the stupidest crap...oh they stole this from that show, they are using stereo types... its a casting call thats not how the charcater will be portrayed most likely...and they are not racist for all we know thats only black guy that auditioned with any talent and thats the part HE chose....its not all the producers the actors get to choose who they audition for

By J. Stone at 8:20 PM ON 01/16/09

Personally I think it sounds like a horrible cast and storyline.

By scifire at 8:23 PM ON 01/16/09

I like what I have read so far, but aren't the writers forgetting on important ingredient for the cast to be complete? A woman? Please, you need a woman there to handle all that testosterone! Otherwise it sounds like quite a show. I hope the absence of a female lead won't be your downfall from the get go!

By abbycat at 12:49 AM ON 01/17/09

Where is the woman or the women on the show. What has made Stargate a great series is having smart, intelligent women on the shows. This will be a downfall if they don't remedy this real quick. On Star Trek and Doctor Who there are always women on the cast and it works. There needs to be the female equation to make a sci-fi series work. It's just how it is.

By ad at 10:38 AM ON 01/17/09

well, i like the concept of the show and reckon it could well fill a gap in the tv sci-fi genre left by the absence of shows like ST:Voyager.

with no new trek to watch on tv (altho an awesome upcoming movie) i welcome the chance to watch a new starship-based sci-fi, and if they can bring the creativity they used in SG:1 and SG:A to the fore as they make this, and maybe borrow a liitle from the classics, there's no reason this can't be a GREAT show!

By vindicus at 10:55 AM ON 01/17/09

I have to agree with alot of the comments about stereotyping of certain characters and
the absence of a female. I also agree that Stargate Atlantis was cut way to short. There was the Dark side of the Asguard, the wraith were still around and even the repliators were still hanging out. It almost seems as though the writers lost thier enthusiasm for the show. There are several more areas that could have been explored as well. Even the Ancients showed up every now and then. They still have not explored all of Atlantis and what about Janis seceret lab?? You see there could have been a lot more added to the show. I am one of the many who loved all the Stargate shows. Why cut it short and leave all those unanswered questions. Oh and what happened to Todd?

I even sent in a suggestion for a show. I even sent them the diagram of my ship the Vindicator 1. It looks like a Dagger and the fighters were shaped like daggers as well.
You would have to see it to appreciate it. This ship was designed to be a preditor for the ancients. It was loaded with fire power.
Did not even get a thanks but no thanks from them. (If they ever got it) Someone probably
just tossed it.

I mean if the writers ran out of ideas why not ask the fans for some ideas or suggestions.
Who better to ask than the fans who watch the shows week after week. Come on guys you don't stop short. Stargate Atlantis could have been another ten year series. I also believe that the characters that were cast in both Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis were absolutely perfect. Thier interaction was great.

Like the others I hope that the new show does not turn out to be a group of people just trying to get home to earth.

By Jeff at 12:52 AM ON 01/18/09

No black guys as smart, scientist types? Don't any of you watch EUREKA? Henry Blake was the smartest guy in town -- and he was black.

By Beverly at 10:15 AM ON 01/18/09

I think that Henry Blake would be a good addition to the cast. SG:A had a few good years left in it. What happens to Todd? Robert Picardo didn't have enough time to really get into his role as leader of SG:A. Are we going to have to wait for a direct ot DVD movie to get any conclusions?

By cm63 at 1:29 AM ON 01/22/09

just get it on the air.
I need my stargate.

By FrostyGus at 12:01 PM ON 01/22/09

If they go the Aurora route (ancient crew in stasis that are too far gone to be revived directly), then are we going to see a holographic character in the crew? Maybe there is a role for Robert Picardo after all...

By pennylane at 12:12 PM ON 01/23/09

BRING BACK SGA AND JASON MOMOA!!!!!

By Dennis at 3:22 PM ON 01/23/09

They cancelled SG:A because it cost too much. Same for Farscape. Now we are expected to watch a new show, fall in love with it, and watch it be cancelled due to high cost. I am growing weary of this process.

But Mos Def would make a fantastic Doctor Who.

By Page2 at 5:11 PM ON 01/23/09

"Edgier and younger in tone than the two previous series" --(groan)-- sounds lame already, I'll give it a shot, but my patience is running thin with Sci-Fi. Cancelling good shows and replacing them with junk.

By kazza at 6:09 AM ON 01/24/09

Yeah I agree that stargate Atlantis has been cut way too soon, there is so many unanswered questions. Mabye they will be answered in the up coming movie. But bring on Stargate Universe. I need satrgate of some kind on.

By Anachronite at 9:07 PM ON 01/26/09

good grief another one? Give us some Firefly! or Star Trek! Stargate just doesn't do it for me!!

By zzath at 12:33 AM ON 01/30/09

What DID happen to Atlantis? It was one of the last remaining real 'scifi' shows left on the Scifi Channel. The characters, stories, and effects were great. Oh wait I forgot there is always the wrestling....

By tony at 9:22 AM ON 02/01/09

I plan to watch the new stargate show. commenting on the last comment. I never understood why ecw is on scifi. What does wrestling have to do with science fiction other than it's fake.

By Jennmd92 at 7:19 PM ON 02/01/09

One question.... What was wrong with SGA cast? I personaly thought the characters were well developed and thought that SGU was going to be a continuation of that cast. Really don't want to start over!!

By DocJohn at 4:03 AM ON 02/04/09

Why not mix in at least some of the cast from SG Atlantis?

By thandrale at 11:39 PM ON 02/05/09

I want a black commander. It works on The Unit

By thandrale at 11:43 PM ON 02/05/09

Make that tough marine a female bodybuilder and that computer nerd a midget. Show some originality and just go wild on casting against type.

By debrat at 9:43 AM ON 02/08/09

NOT! Bring back SGAtlantis, or better yet, FARSCAPE!!

By frolickalot at 9:19 PM ON 02/10/09

i agree i want farscape and SG back!!!

By sylvia k at 4:17 PM ON 02/11/09

So far, from what I've seen, I won't be watching. Looking forward to what the SGA actors will be doing in other projects, however.
They should have just written SGA better (dumped the McKeller romance) and explored those characters a bit more - they were a good cast, just needed something interesting to do.

By Zack at 7:58 PM ON 02/13/09

I have always been a fan of SG1, SGA and Farscape. Well drawn out, believable characters, engaging storylines & unparalled realism, have had me on the edge of my seat for the last decade. The fact that they were cut in their prime is both dissapointing and irritating on SCIFI's behalf.
Take for example; in SG1, the Asgards have frequent many episodes, and were wiped out in the 1st few minutes of the season finale, appaling & out of taste!

I hope SGU is able to maintain the quality of entertainment that SG1 and SGA have set in motion.
At least for now we can enjoy Eureka. INDEED!

By BLAH at 9:56 PM ON 03/02/09

Remember that Stargate SG1 episode where they kept flashing to movie/tv ideas as a joke. They showed a farscape, a wizard of oz.....then there was the one with the young kids and cellphones......this whole "new, young and edgy" idea is giving me a bad vibe. Here's hoping they don't screw up the franchise with a stupid idea.

By alum at 6:42 PM ON 03/06/09

I watched 10-years of SG1 loved it and thought it sucked when it canceled. The cast was the best on TV. I followed 5-years of SGA and couldn't believe SCIFI canceled that too. They were both great and we need more of them especially SG1 but would settle for SGA. Can't wait for the movies to be released ---- SGU sounds really boring. Stranded on ship all the time - what I like about the other two they travel to other planet and earth was involved. Stargate Universe, I don't know I have serious reservation about this show.

By Anna at 12:53 PM ON 03/12/09

I'm only 13, but for the past couple of months I have watched every single episode of both SG1 and SGA and I'm gonna have to say that SG1 was most definatly the best. Michael Shanks rocked it, in my opinion. Corin Nemec, too. I'm looking forward to some new stuff, I just hope it has humor. Being stuck on a ship doesn't sound very fun. If there's laughter, I'm good. Who doesn't like laughter?

By candiotti at 2:01 AM ON 03/14/09

Put Amanda Tapping or Claudia Black into the mix.
Plot the same as Star Trek:Voyager
Don't like the cast one bit especially Justin Louis.
Should've kept on going with Atlantis.

By GFofGoku at 4:45 PM ON 03/15/09

What happened to "...leave no one behind?" The Atlantis crew certainly left Lt. Adan Ford behind...will he show up in Stargate Universe?
GFofGoku(thelastSaiyan)

By Minus at 4:49 PM ON 03/17/09

I hope it works out. I know I will watch. Like others said before me...let's see the stereotypes hashed. Mix it up a bit on that line. Will we finally have a full time gay-charcter? Bring back Dr. Jackson, could use the ascension angle for that. At any rate I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Fall, eh? btw the hot chick most guys want , Why not make her the Tel'c or Ronan role? (Xena in Space)

By Bob at 5:21 AM ON 03/23/09

Hope we get to see two SG-A dvd movies!

Why SG-U at this time is beyond me?...SG-A was doing just fine, even with the new boss who used to be a goverment prick.
