Want Samuel L. Jackson to be Nick Fury? What he says about it

Samuel L. Jackson, who was quoted recently saying he might not reprise the role of Nick Fury in upcoming Marvel Movies, remained tight-lipped about ongoing negotiations at the premiere of his Afro Samurai video game Tuesday in Hollywood.

Asked about the status of the talks, he simply told reporters: "Contract negotiation. ... It's like life. Nick Fury's negotiating."

The Los Angeles Times first reported that Jackson was not happy about the progress of talks between his representatives and Marvel Studios about bringing Jackson back as the iconic character in upcoming films, including a proposed Avengers movie.

But on Tuesday, Jackson gave no indication of ill feelings.

Jackson first appeared as Nick Fury, agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., in a post-credit cameo shot in Iron Man. Didn't Marvel have him signed up to play the character in subsequent films ahead of time?

"No," Jackson said.

Meanwhile, Jackson's pet project, the animated Afro Samurai, is due for a live-action movie starring Jackson in the title role. But Jackson said he rejected the first draft he received for that film.

"We read one, didn't work out too well, but we're still working on it," he said.

The Afro Samurai video game is now in stores for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

At least you were asked, Sam.

Meanwhile, we survived an X-Men without Angela Basset, and we'll survive an Avengers without you. Let's face it...There'll be more than enough egos on that set to begin with.

Samuel L. Jackson should be recast as Capt. America.

It's a shame that Micheal Ironside is too old for the part. He would have made the perfect Nick Fury. As for Samuel L. Jackson. No way.....

Hey, I'm from the Ultimates generation, and as far as I'm concerned, Sam Jackson IS Nick Fury.

I think that Sam Jackson should be Nick Fury I think he is better in the role than David Hasselloff

MARVEL SHOULD JUST PAY THE MAN AND GET ON WITH MAKING THE MOVIE IT'S BAD ENOUGH THEY REPLACED THE ACTOR THAT WOULD PLAY WAR MACHINE IN THE NEXT IRONMAN MOVIE. BECAUSE IF THEY ARE GOING TO KEEP MESSING WITH THE CAST THAN WHY HAVE THESE MOVIES BE CONNECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE

rewod is confused; Angela Basset did not appear in any X-Men films.

I recall a moment in one of the Ultimates comics where Fury is asked who should play him in a movie version of their lives. He replies, "Samuel Jackson, of course." It seems like Marvel has given Jackson all the muscle in this negotiation. Who can blame him for putting a high price tag on his own status as iconic badass?

Jackson is the Ultimate Nick Fury.

Marvel is being foolish. Everyone knows that Iron Man made a ton of cash. Therefore, Marvel should invest the money required to get the fans back in their seats.

Actors aren't paid with just up front salaries. They receive a percentage of a films revenue. Marvel could be creative with paying the cast, create an offer for multiple films with a backend payout based on film and DVD revenues.

Not bringing back Terrence Howard and being cheap with Jackson and Roarke makes Marvel seem pennywise and dollar foolish

trystor is confused, the fact that Angela Bassett did not appear in the X-Men movies as Storm is what we all had to survive. She should've been the only choice for that role!

Sam always has at least 3 movies a year and 3 more in production. He is not hard pressed to reprise Nick Fury.

I dont think Avengers is a slam dunk. Paying Jackson gives them a marketable name to go along with Robert Downey Jr. Marvel get a "cheap" rep real fast.

By Wompapants at 1:46 AM ON 01/29/09

Who cares? Marvel sucks.

By Staxeon at 1:56 AM ON 01/29/09

I don't get it. They dumped Terrance Howard in a swift and frankly underhanded way, in favor of Don Chedle because Don's (supposedly) a bigger name.

Now they nickel and dime with Sam Jackson???

By jimmy4bits at 11:28 AM ON 01/30/09

as to samuel as nick fury...dont think so..i love samuel jackson as a actor..but nick fury is white..no slur or racial slur intended..he was always white in the comics originally...why change it....

By Iccaro at 2:54 PM ON 01/30/09

Xmen was being shopped and promoted using Angela Basset's name and presenting her as storm.. then at the last minute they decided they wanted to do a "younger" team movie and never even asked her. But they banked on her rep to get the deal.

By La Diva Sim at 11:48 PM ON 09/21/09

@Iccaro wow i never even knew that. damn we were so close to getting our true Storm. I heard that Angela Bassett was attached to do X-Men back in 95' but that is ridiculous Hollywood BS how it worked out. I think the producers missed out bc everybody says AB should've been Storm.
