Warner Brothers and producer Joel Silver have set Kung Fu Panda co-director John Stevenson to make his live-action directing debut on Masters of the Universe, a re-imagining of the signature Mattel toy line, Variety reported.
He-Man is a brawny prince who transforms into a warrior who becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, which is being ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.
Silver is producing through his Silver Pictures banner. Mattel's Barry Waldo will be executive producer.
WB acquired the property in 2007, and Justin Marks wrote the first draft of the script based on a story he developed with Neil Ellice.
The Mattel property became iconic by way of the 1980s cartoon series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and the property was previously turned into a campy flop by Cannon Films in 1987, with Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frost/Nixon star Frank Langella as the villainous Skeletor.

No, seriously... of all the reboots and re-imaginings and revamps and restarts of all the franchises out in Hollywood, is THIS one really necessary?

They tried rebooting the animated series about five years ago. This is like that bad CGI Ninja Turtles re-imagining all over again. And as with the eighties version this will just be to sell toys and mostly to try desperately to appeal to the now-adult former He-Man fans living nostalgia.

If Skeletor calls Evil Lynn a boob again (he did in one of the first episodes of the old show), it's sure to be great!

Hey DUDE,
The problem is, lots of up n coming writers and writers that have been around for a while and can't get a break, have new ideas. But since Hollywood is all about who you know, and not about good stories, people with no imagination tell their friends, "hey, lets remake this" and it gets made. While people like me with original ideas can't get it made because we don't know the right people. So until people stop going to see remakes and crappy movies, Hollywood will keep making them.
If people would boycott them, then Hollywood would get the picture and start trying to find people that can actually write a good and original movie.

As much as I loved the first He-man movie.. with all its Kirby-esque overtones and guest appearances by a young Monica(friends) and Tom Paris(voyager).. the sequel staring Jean-Claude Van Damme just killed the charm of it so I'm looking forward to the reboot.

Bill: You can't actually say Cyborg was a sequel to Masters of the Universe because it was not promoted as such or even given the permission to use any of the licensure. In the very beginning it was intended as a sequel, but was shot down for many reasons.
Anyways, I'm all for it. While remakes are getting on my nerves too, I think that they could make an awesome movie version that is much better than the Dolph Lundgren version (which I still like and own). I'd like to see it set up as a sequel. I still remember being a little kid and watching it with my little brother. We accidentally let it run through the credits and were super surprised to see the added footage where Skeletor pops up and says he'll be back. They should start with a return of Skeletor, but not focus on the details of the last movie. Throw in a few shout-outs to the original, but make it so new viewers can jump right in.

Bill & bigalOSU there is no sequel to "Masters of the Universe". And as for Jean-Claude Van Damme starring in "Cyborg" there are 2 sequels to that movie "Cyborg 2" (93) starring Angelina Jolie as Casella 'Cash' Reese & Khrystyne Haje played the same role in "Cyborg 3: The Recycler" (94).
