Since we relaunched SCI FI Wire at the beginning of January, you've posted thousands of great comments and sent us hundreds of e-mails, and we've been reading them all. We've listened to your suggestions on how we might improve the site, and today we're making some changes based on your feedback.
Here's what's different:
We've modified the colors of the site to tone down the "blinding white" effect.
We've changed the layout so you can see more stories on the main page, and so that more important stories have extra room.
We added News to the navigation bar for those readers who only want to see news stories.
We added Reviews and Columns to the navigation bar so you can find our reviews and columnists more easily.
We simplified and clarified the categories section in the left-hand column.
And in case you missed it, earlier this month we released a free iPhone application for those readers who own an iPhone or iPod Touch.
Thanks for visiting the site and sharing your comments with us. Your suggestions and constructive criticism have been invaluable to us and we're looking forward to hearing more.

What happened to the rating system? It was fun to watch the pretty stars light up...

Whatever you did to help speed up the site, thank you. There used to be a two or three second delay each time I tried to scroll down the page. I know it's my fault for having an old computer but I really appreciate your making the page a little more streamlined anyway. Thanks!

I was a little confused with the newest update at first, but I'm finding it easier to scroll through the smaller items now instead of digging through overly large articles. Keep up the good work.
By Lavalord at 5:47 PM ON 02/24/09
I like the more condensed look
By Sabben at 6:07 PM ON 02/24/09
Getting rid of the overly large article format sure helps viewing your site. I do miss the short news items and the top 10 you used to have in the sidebar though.

Good changes.
Now, if you'll go back to having WRITERS who write actual stories with proper English and everything, you'll be on the right track. Or clearly mark your blog-quality stuff as "BLOG" so we can skip it.
Design features are important, but CONTENT matters even more. The quality of content is what needs to be improved most.

Old site was STILL better.
Get rid of the snarky attitudes and opinionated writers next
By John Duncan Yoyo at 7:30 PM ON 02/24/09
I miss the polls and the ranking lists too. You have lots of room for several boxes down the side before the articles run out.

What happened to the question of the week with the 3 or 4 choices to answer it with? I enjoyed that immensely.

"And in case you missed it, earlier this month we released a free iPhone application for those readers who own an iPhone or iPod Touch."
You forgot the part where you have to live in North America only...

I don't like that Sci Fi Wire opens up another browser window. You could also eliminate the comments section (yes, I know I'm using the comments section...).
I do have to agree with another poster that the old version was better.
By DR Smith at 10:36 PM ON 02/24/09
You young people and your updated looks and your snarky opinions and your comment sections. I like my SF news sites like I like my teenage daughter's dates: Straight and boring.
By Thogar at 11:39 PM ON 02/24/09
I still hate the white. If you do nothing else, for the love of my vision get rid of the white...
Other than that I like the changes, but I can't stand that white. Hurts my eyes.
By Rorschach at 12:08 AM ON 02/25/09
How about some policy changes? It would be nice if the opinion pieces were more professional and contained actual, defendable opinions and not just snark. Idiotic lists about why the author thinks he or she is better than so-and-so don't really belong on a website created for what purports to be a professional organization.

I agree with Paul B. and oastr. Get rid of those writers who make a rediculous review that has to do with nothing and those writers who are completely biased in their reviews. Those continuous posts of Christian Bale cussing a guy out was absolutely rediculous 1 post was enough. That review of Dakota Flanning was moronically rediculous noone cared nor wanna see her play Sarah Connor and no it wasn't funny it was stupid. I do have a sense of humor, but this is a professional site let it's posts be professinal as well. And lets not see an article saying crap about the nintendo wii, the writers can keep their opinions to themselves and just give us an update on that game saying it was embarrassing to own it wasn't very professional.
This stuff didn't happen in the old site and that's what made it genuine. Of course a few extra features this new site still lacks the old site had. Don't have to revert to the old site again, but don't exclude anything that made it good. I forgot what it was called but there was this news type thing over on the right hand screen that was above the ratings scale and below the poll and had 3 news subjects it gave perfect information about stuff in a small paragraph short and quick to read for an update it be nice if that returned.
By p7 at 6:45 AM ON 02/25/09
The new design is fine, but whatever you've done to make it happens has RUINED your RSS feed, at least in my Google Reader. All the posts sine the design launched are concatenated together, every time there's a new post the whole list is added, links are broken... it's HORRIBLE!
By BernieLugo at 9:47 AM ON 02/25/09
Congrats on your new web page design. Everything is perfect with one exception, where did the sci fi galleries with sci artworks go? I can not find it since you re-sdesigned your webpage. Will they not be available anymore?
By Megan at 10:06 AM ON 02/25/09
Hey I agree with some of the comments.....PLEASE BRING BACK the POLLS of the WEEK and the RATINGS of the DAY.
Long time fan...
By budgethero at 10:40 AM ON 02/25/09
thank you this is much easier to read.
if i could just ask for the ratings info and polls, i'd be very happy. it doesnt have to be next week. but it would be great to have them back.
again, thanks for listening.
By Video-Reviewmaster at 3:40 PM ON 02/25/09
Are you no longer providing "alpha" review ratings (A+, B-, C, D, F...) for current theatrical films, tv shows and new DVD's... If you're still doing that, where can I find them please...?
By Pete at 5:35 PM ON 02/25/09
So this white is less blinding? Maybe a little, but less blinding is still blinding.
How about helping out your older readers whose eyesight still finds this shade of white (or any shade of white) literally painful to look at for more than a minute or two? I can't read articles here without extreme eye strain and I'm sure your older readers will agree.
You do care about us geriatric scifi fans, don't you?
By mdades at 3:56 AM ON 02/27/09
the big problem is now the fields? that the article text
gets put into on the home page. if i enlarge the text
size in firefox to be big enough to read, the text at the
bottom of each article vanishes.
i could do without the white too.
By Joe Asap at 6:38 PM ON 03/01/09
Is it possible to create different skins that users can select like other websites allow like Yahoo? I dont like the white backround & would prefer several options that I can customize.
By mysticzzz at 6:01 PM ON 03/03/09
To those complaining about the blinding white, Use the Firefox browser with the addon Accessibar and you can change the background and font to any color you want
