Alex Proyas' Tripods movie will be the first of a trilogy of films

Alex Proyas\' \<i\>Tripods\<\/i\> movie will be the first of a trilogy of films

Director Alex Proyas (Dark City, I, Robot) told SCI FI Wire that his upcoming film adaptation of John Christopher's young-adult SF series The Tripods will be the first of an envisioned trilogy of films.

"We've done a draft; we're basically at the first-draft stage of Tripods, and we're about to go into our second draft," Proyas said in an exclusive interview on Monday. "Pretty happy with the script; I think it's come a long way. ... We're only doing the first book, The White Mountains, and the notion is, obviously, that it will hopefully be a trilogy. But we'll probably just be shooting the first movie independently."

The film is based on the first of three Tripods books by Christopher, the pseudonym of Samuel Youd (the other two are The City of Gold and Lead and The Pool of Fire), about a post-apocalyptic world ruled by giant three-legged alien machines who place a mind-controlling "cap" on children when they near the age of 14. Proyas is co-writing the adaptation with Stuart Hazeldine, with whom he also worked on the upcoming sci-fi thriller film Knowing.

"That's something that I read when I was exactly the right age, which was about 11 or 12," the Egyptian-born, Australian-raised Proyas said, adding: "It's virtually a coming-of-age story with alien invaders. So that really struck a nerve with me as a kid, and it's haunted me: the notion of these creatures sort of capping us and putting these kind of mind-control probes on us to kind of indoctrinate us into the world of adults. I always found that a really powerful notion, so that's always been something that I've wanted to explore in those stories."

Knowing is set to open March 20.

The world isn't ruled by alien machines. It is ruled by slightly bigger than human sized, tripod legged aliens. How can you get the thinking cap detail right but the general antagonists of the series wrong?

By Aves at 9:31 AM ON 02/24/09

In their defense, the fact that it's aliens isn't really revealed until the 2nd book. Besides it is called "The Tripods Trilogy" after all.

I for one am really looking forward to this; I just hope it's done right.

BBC 80's series FTW !!

I hope they don't run out off money and stop after the second p[art like the BBC!

This is exciting! I read the trilogy at exactly the right age (11 or 12, as Proyas says), and it haunted me for at least a decade. It was both frightening and thrilling. I'm not going to jump on the whiny "oh I hope it doesn't suck" bandwagon, and just be glad someone's making a fresh attempt at producing it as a feature.

I've been looking for the name of this series for years and years. My fifth grade teacher read this series to the class and I loved it. Some twenty years later, I have been trying to remember the name so I can read it to my son. I have asked customer service at bookstores and nobody knows what the name was.

FINALLY I NOW KNOW THE NAME!!!

I never knew this was a trilogy. I read "The White Mountains" one day in the sixth grade while sitting on the floor between two aisles of the school library for a couple hours almost 30 years ago, and it definitely left an impression. Sometimes I'll remember what I think is something from "War of the Worlds" and it was actually from this book. I also really liked that it had kind of an open ending, something I wasn't used to at age 11 or however old I was then, but finding out it's a trilogy kind of makes sense.

I'll give the movie a try if it isn't another cash-in-on-Harry-Potter kiddie movie with wooden acting and direction and effects by Playstation, Inc. In the mean time, maybe I'll pick up the whole trilogy and read it in a night or two.

The "Tripods Trilogy" touched me at an early age... 8 (1978). I became a Cub Scout at 8, and started to recieve a magazine called Boy's Life. First, it was one of (if not the first) piece of mail I received with my name on it. Second, it wasn't a great magazine; but, it reenforced the skills and ideas Scouting was teaching me. Lastly, it included a comic page in he middle of the mag. This page had a true illustrated scouting tale (in which i would eventually see & read about Scouts I knew) and a sunday paper kind of comic strip of the Tripods Trilogy. I didn't know it was from a book, I didn't know it was a trilogy, I just enjoyed it.

This simple comic strip adaptation, helped me to start reading... It grabbed my attention, and drew me in to where I was excited every month to get it in the mail. I would rip it open and go right to "The White Mountains" page...

I remember the BBC series, and enjoyed it; I was sad it was never finished. I have read and reread this trilogy many times since..

I loved Dark City... and can't wait to see Proyas' vision for this series....

I also enjoyed the books. There was also a fourth prequil book which explained how the aliens used brainwashing to take over the earth.

Does anyone know the the BBC version is available?

By dalekman at 1:39 PM ON 02/24/09

I loved this show! It needs to come to film, all three of them especially the BBC never did a third season which was a bummer! Maybe this will encourage the BBC to do a third season.

There will be a DVD release of the BBC series (1&2) in March from 2Entertain. It's only Region2, though [http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000R21294]
The latest release date is 24th but it has been delayed a couple of times since its intended release in January.

TJ . . Was a scout myself and ALWAYS met the postman for my next copy of Boys Life to read the next part of the comic!! Can't wait to see the film!!

By gorehound696 at 5:43 PM ON 02/24/09

This is interesting and would be cool if he sticks to the books and all 3 books get made.
At least it is not YARM (yet another remake) as it has never been done as a movie.
yes it was a bbc show but only 2 seasons were done

By Rorschach at 12:11 AM ON 02/25/09

Hopefully it will be better than the comic strip version that was published in Boys Life in the '80s.

By mr at 11:46 AM ON 02/26/09

Lets hope the film is set in the UK / Europe and not the US.

By NoDaddy at 11:50 PM ON 02/26/09

hopefully it will not tank like the BBC series did in it's second season!

By mes0000 at 2:38 PM ON 02/28/09

I've long awaited someone to discover these wonderful books my librarian steered me to as a kid.

Now I'll cross my fingers they don't slaughter the movie as Walden Media does with other classics like The Dark is Rising.

By kranser at 10:34 AM ON 06/23/09

Hopefully they will use similar Tripod designs to those the BBC used - the Tripod on the book cover does look that scary and looks too similar to the war of the worlds, whereas the BBC design was brilliant!

By kranser at 10:37 AM ON 06/23/09

Sorry I meant to say "Does NOT look that scary"

By Steve at 4:28 PM ON 07/22/09

I've been waiting for this one since I read the books in college, around 1990 - I'm super excited! Let's hold out faith that because of Alex Proyas' involvement it's going to look great, be set in the U.K. and have all the other elements that made the books great!

By Nathan at 7:14 PM ON 07/25/09

I read the books when I was 11, I loved them i cant wait for the movie to come out! I do hope after that they make a "When The Tripods Came" movie after that!

By Paul at 10:05 PM ON 12/06/09

I've been hoping they would make these into movies. I enjoyed the books as a kid back in the 1980's. Let's just hope they don't screw them up and make it suck.
