Mark Verheiden has been hired to write DreamWorks's original sci-fi movie Quartermain, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The adventure film springs from an original idea, though no plot details are available. Holly Bario and Jonathan Eirich are overseeing the project for the studio.

Quartermain is one of the 17 projects DreamWorks developed, then paid to take with it when it left the Paramount fold last year. Paramount retains the right to co-finance and co-distribute the movie.

Verheiden is a writer and producer on SCI FI's Battlestar Galactica and NBC's Heroes and a former writer-producer on Smallville. He also has an adaptation of Teen Titans in development at Warner Brothers and Ark, based on his comic, in development at Columbia.

I wish him luck. He's really the unsung hero of the series' writers. Far better than Jane Espenson and willing to write smart, political stuff, and yet (if you check out his blog) tremendously humble and funny. I wish he'd join "Caprica".

I wonder if Verheigen's failure to write for Caprica is a hint of what to expect from the series. Ultimately, though, the fate of Caprica probably hinges on how BSG ends. The "easy out" would be for the series to conclude with a "everybody dies" scenerio. That would be a major disappointment for most fans and affect who will watch Caprica. After all, it would be difficult to become invested in a program when you know every character, their families, and everything they work for is ultimately destined to be destroyed 50 years later.
