Universal Studios Home Entertainment announced that Caprica, the prequel to Battlestar Galactica, will drop exclusively on DVD on April 21 as a two-hour movie and precursor to the SCI FI series. The company also unveiled new cover art for the DVD and a few new stills.
The DVD will feature a limited-edition uncut and unrated version of the pilot movie before the series' broadcast premiere on SCI FI Channel in 2010. Caprica is executive-produced by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick and Remi Aubuchon.
Bonus features will take viewers behind the scenes of the creation of Caprica and include commentary with director Jeffrey Reiner, Moore and Eick; deleted scenes; video blogs; and the featurettes "What the Frak Is Caprica?" "The Director's Process," "The V Club" and "The Birth of a Cylon."
Set over 50 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica, Caprica depicts a world at the peak of its power, grappling with new science and technologies and the issues they create. The series stars Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcomson and Polly Walker.

Universal Cable Productions will begin production on the Caprica series in the summer in Vancouver, Canada, for a 2010 television premiere. The DVD of Caprica will carry a suggested retail price of $26.98.

Any word on a Blu-ray release?
By Paul B. at 6:22 PM ON 02/25/09
Am I the only BSG fan who has ZERO interest in Caprica? I mean, seriously, do we need a soap opera set in the early days of the Cylons?
Like someone posted in a SCIFI forum, it's "More than One Life to Live." (I wish I had your name to give you credit!!)

Who's the girl in the top paragraph? She looks a lot like Josh's girlfriend on Kyle XY.

I'll second the Blu-ray, but either way...kick ass news!

So buy the DVD instead of seeing it first on the SciFi to see if you want to watch the series?
Never.
By reddogs77 at 7:55 PM ON 02/25/09
Looking forward to it.
By Mr X at 8:02 PM ON 02/25/09
Can someone tell me why would I want to watch this? I am seriously drawing a blank.
By Red at 8:25 PM ON 02/25/09
All you mother frakers need to shut up and give the show a chance.
By flguy09 at 8:40 PM ON 02/25/09
If the same creators are involved, it may be good...Netflix makes it about a $1 rental. I love the indignation in some of the comments, like BSG is the holy grail. I'll withhold judgment until I see it!
By mread at 8:46 PM ON 02/25/09
I'm willing to give the show a chance, but I'm ticked that they would make us buy a pilot on DVD a full year before we're likely to see it on air. Knowing Universal, they will probably turn around and bundle it with the eventual season 1 or 1.0 DVD (which I predict will be just in time for Christmas next year) thus paying twice for the same thing. They put the BSG mini-series/pilot in the season 1 DVD set after selling it separately and tossed Razor in with the season 4.0 DVD after releasing it as a stand alone DVD. I may rent it, but there's no way I'm going to buy it before they announce their plans for the season 1 DVD.
By Kevin J at 9:30 PM ON 02/25/09
Ronald D. Moore, Magda Apanowicz, Eric Stoltz, etc, many reasons I will definitely give this show a chance. Yes, they may package it with the Season 1.0 DVD release, and yes, everyone needs to realize that Battlestar is not the holy book and not to judge something they have no knowledge of. They wouldn't be producing this if they didn't have a plan.

"They wouldn't be producing this if they didn't have a plan"
No pun intended, right? heh
By SirChunks at 9:54 PM ON 02/25/09
Actually, they did the SAME thing with the BSG pilot folks. And then Season 1 was released TWICE: without the pilot DVD originally and then WITH the pilot.
It's really now different than music group releasing the same album in multiple countries with a different track listing. People still gobble the various versions of them up...
Quit whining...seriously. Now go tell your mommy that I am here to play with her.

I'm looking forward to CAPRICA.
By Shifferd Braynes at 10:32 PM ON 02/25/09
I suppose from Sci Fi Channel's POV, it means that they can fill up their slate with Stargate, Ghost Hunters, and BSG spin-offs and never have to put on another original show. And I guess Ron Moore thinks every sci fi franchise needs a prequel. If it was good enough for Star Wars, Star Trek, Dune, and B5 then by golly it's good enough for Ron D. Moore.
By Muldfeld at 11:54 PM ON 02/25/09
I'm a huge fan of drama done right -- as in by Ronald D. Moore or BSG's best like Michael Taylor. I have no desire to watch a show whose main inspiration is the same as the woman who wrote BSG's most recent episode, "Deadlock". Awful stuff. Any Buffy alum shouldn't be hired..... Seriously.....
I wish they'd bring in Ira Steven Behr....
By Ryan at 2:51 AM ON 02/26/09
This is to gain buzz. They don't need to do this, it'll air on TV. This just makes them money and gets the word out. That cover though... Looks like Law & Order with the main credits stock picture of Caprica
By RangerPrimeX at 8:54 AM ON 02/26/09
I for one love BSG and look forward to something different set in that universe.
By Lord Elrond at 11:40 AM ON 02/26/09
Releasing it this way will allow them to recoup some production costs and fine-tune the series prior to the broadcast launch so as to avoid major problems later.
By McTex at 12:13 PM ON 02/26/09
God some of you people are idiots. NO ONE is making you buy this. You are free to wait and watch it when it airs on TV.
I love that I can buy it and not have to wait another frakkin year.
And anyone who has no interest in seeing this show is not nor possibly can be a true BSG fan. I am sure they make great fans of Stargate and Enterprise, though.
By Celesto at 12:43 PM ON 02/26/09
looking forward
By PSDragon at 2:00 PM ON 02/26/09
I love a good Sci Fi Drama... BG was high on the Drama and low on the SCI FI and it kicked (and still kicks) some major butt. I'll watch it because Ron Moore KNOWS how to tell a story.
What I find amazing is the need for people to say that they have no interest in watching it. Well folks... if you don't want to watch... don't watch it! And go complain somewhere else. I'm convinced that there are people who will find flault with perfection.
By McTex at 2:45 PM ON 02/26/09
PSDragon - don't you love how people who have "no interest in watching it" are interested enough that they spend their time reading this article and then more of their precious time commenting on it? lmfao
By MaxBax at 4:19 PM ON 02/26/09
I know a lot of you are big Ron Moore fans, but I hope you know that halfway through season 1, he's intending to hand over the reigns to someone else: http://trekweb.com/stories.php?aid=497d4cde9970d&topBrowse=all
As for the show, I hope it's good... but I'm apprehensive.
By PSDragon at 4:31 PM ON 02/26/09
I didn't see where he was going to pass it off. Either way... I'm looking forward to watching it and will reserve any judgement until it airs. If it goes south after Ron Moore stops working on it.. then I'll stop watching it.... Maybe... : ) ... Voyager was a show that had bad episodes and I watched it anyway... and TNG during season 1... oy vey! As long as the writing is good and the stories are engaging... I'll watch it... and I probably won't complain about any bad episodes outside of my circle of Sci Fi friends... no need to air my disapproval on the web. What would be the point!
Yeay! Battlestar Galactica and Caprica!!
By Tigh at 6:39 PM ON 02/26/09
Are they gonna have any BOOZE on this FRACKIN show or what?I am in this FRACKIN show?

Half the people on this board are troglodytes unable to have intelligent conversations.
By Nash at 8:35 PM ON 02/26/09
I think Caprica has a lot of potential. But what I don't understand are all of you people that do nothing else but criticize everything. If you don't like the idea of Caprica, don't watch it, but not everyone shares your tastes.
By Bobathin at 11:55 PM ON 02/26/09
Come on, people. You all sound like the "Battlestar Purists" who refuse to like the RDM Galactica.
I'm definitely giving this show a chance. If you don't have an interest in it, then I'll have myself a frakkin' good time watching it without you! =P
By Teresa at 4:15 AM ON 02/27/09
Why the cover is so awful?
By mesarift at 6:52 PM ON 03/03/09
I'm a HUGE BSG fan! This looks totally boring and uninteresting.

I can't wait! Love the new pictures.
By Beatnik at 10:09 AM ON 03/23/09
All i have to say to those that are not interested in this are not really BSG fans or at least not die hard as personally i do not want to wait over a year for more when i can cave more in less than a month. BSG only had 4 Seasons NOT ENOUGH IMO.
I like they set a story and ended it leaving room for things like this and hopefully more I myself am happy and hope it will do well.
I dont think it will let me down.
I think it will be interesting and i just Love The BSG writing staff and producers and as long as they don't change I know they wont let the real fans out there down they might but the fact they ended the series means they have good ideas and are not out to get as much money as possible like other shows like Lost which has gone on and on with with different writers and always changing things and never enplaning anything, Lost will just stop one day i would be truly amazed if it actually ends as it should already had done so. I like shows that end and have new shows rather than trying to go on and on. They could have ended lost after the 4th season and then started a new series based on the "others" then possibly "Dharma" then story's could be told and answers could be told but its doing on and they are digging themselves into a whole.
BSG did not do this and I commend them for that Buy this DVD so you can support them and get more answers and other sides of the story along with spin offs All for the true fan.
Thanks for the pics I do myself hope it is a DVD/BluRay release like most lately as BSG in HD is FRAKING AMAZING just like R.D.M. said Feature Film Effects on a Tv Budget the props and Special Effects guys on this show are truly amazing.
By mcleod at 7:02 PM ON 03/31/09
This will be boring. Something from the first cylon war would be much better. everyone wants to see the original 12 battlestars fighting old-school toasters!!!!
By Broken Saint at 9:31 AM ON 04/15/09
It's good. Really. It's very, very good. Lines like "So Say We All" were nice nods to BSG, but I really think this could work as an ongoing series in it's own right.
By Kermonk at 10:05 PM ON 04/15/09
You'll wanna watch it because its teenage angst for teenagers, and some religious mumbo jumbo throw in for good measure ;)
By omni at 4:20 AM ON 04/26/09
I saw the episode. It was pretty damn good.
