Caprica, the highly anticipated prequel to Battlestar Galactica, will premiere exclusively on DVD on April 21 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment, SCI FI Channel announced.
The feature-length prequel will be available on DVD as a limited-edition uncut and unrated version before the series' broadcast premiere on the SCI FI Channel in 2010.
Caprica is executive-produced by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick (Battlestar Galactica) and Remi Aubuchon (24). The DVD will carry a suggested retail price of $26.98.
Universal Cable Productions will begin production on the Caprica series in the summer in Vancouver for a 2010 television premiere.
The DVD will also include bonus features that take viewers behind the scenes of the creation of Caprica.
The film will also be available at selected online destinations for digital download transactions.
Here's how SCI FI describes the series: Caprica begins a new epic saga that continues the franchise's commitment to thought-provoking storytelling and extraordinary characters. Set more than 50 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica, Caprica is a world at the peak of its power, grappling with new science and technologies and the issues they create.
The series will star Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcomson and Polly Walker.

This will be my first negative post EVER.
I really hope the Sci-Fi powers that be do not pull a Sapranos on us. I hate the long delays in between ''Seasons'' Ala Battle Star Galactica season 3.1 to be followed 9 months later by season 3.2 ect ect.. If they do I absolutely will not follow Caprica. I did it for BSG and that was crazy.

What about Blu-ray? A DVD only release doesn't really cut it these days.
By Michael L at 7:36 PM ON 02/05/09
Hmm, this seems highly unusual on the part of Sci-Fi. Releasing the feature length movie before the broadcast premiere? I don't think I've ever heard of that. I'm wondering if this is a sign that Sci-Fi is trying to kill this series before it begins? If those of us that are eagerly awaiting this series all but the DVD, will the broadcast premiere debut to low ratings, prompting network suits to reconsider?
By Jersquall at 7:47 PM ON 02/05/09
Michael L what gets me is the The DVD suggested retail price of $26.98 which is just a bit high in my opinion. I guess we will know if this is a sign that Sci-Fi is trying to kill this series before it begins if they do not accurately advertise Caprica. I think they will do their best to sell Caprica via DVD to see if this strange experiment will work.

Is Sci-Fi about to go under? Seriously, it seems like the Network is making decisions based on the marketing or advertising dept. Long delays between seasons, the Death of SGA, years before new HIGHLY ANTICIPATED shows come and now this? I like Sci-Fi but it is by no means my favorite Newtwork. I watched SG1, SGA, BAttkestar Galactica and it's cool to watch reruns of Star Trek and some short lived shows and older classics like Knight Rider. But what are they doing? WIthout BSG or SGA what is the flagship show, Eureka? I hear it's good but not my cup of tea. WTF? And the other posters are right 26.98 is Blue-Ray range prices. Fire management, start over...develop a new Star Trek series, bring us Stargate Universe quickly and re-run shows people want to see, in some type of order.....

Sci-fi has a history of ruining shows and or canceling them in their prime.
I still haven't forgiven them for frelling canceling Farscape!
By nilus at 8:43 PM ON 02/05/09
Actually 26.99 is the suggested retail price of almost 99% of DVD released. Its just that most stores charge less. It will be 20 bucks like most new DVDs. Personally I have a feeling SCI-Fi thinks the show is gonna tank so they want to see how much interest the Pilot on DVD generates.
I can't say I blame them, I personally kinda see this Caprica thing as a money grab attempt. I don't feel BSG needs a sequel or prequel.
By mattyhugh at 8:52 PM ON 02/05/09
Doesn't seem that Sci-Fi has much faith in Caprica.
By burnedonce at 9:21 PM ON 02/05/09
Is this going to be like Razor? Release an unrated-uncut stand alone version first, only to bundle it in with a season box set (in this case Season 4.0) six months later? Count me out.
By TonyDel at 9:43 PM ON 02/05/09
wtf!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does anybody at SCI account for the economy??? I dont have 19.95 to plunk down for this right now - what a crock of algee creamed cr*p!!
By RuthG at 10:12 PM ON 02/05/09
I am not really pleased by this news. I am excited to see Caprica, I am hoping that it is stand alone and not a BSG spin off. There can only be one BSG.
As a employee of a large electronic store I can tell you the opening price will be between 16.99 and 14.99. Yes you know the store.
WTF Sci-Fi I think you should stand behind your show look what you guys did for Serenity! You created a series for it.
By Muldfeld at 10:39 PM ON 02/05/09
The kind of news I'd really love to hear is that Ron Moore will stay running the show and actually write stories because the magic tends to go away when he doesn't and especially will if he's not rewriting people's scripts.
Don't go, Mr. Moore!
Also, don't worry, folks; this will be on the Caprica Season 1 DVD set due out in 2011! Patience!..... I'll be buying the DVD for the Pilot in April, but this is a rip off!
By darkHorse at 11:00 PM ON 02/05/09
I think SciFi is trying to sell the DVD to recoup the production costs since advertising prices are crashing because of the economy, and or make money for the series in 2010. EITHER WAY, IT BLOWS, but I will buy it anyway because I am sucker, and also not into pirating.
By AdmNaismith at 12:30 AM ON 02/06/09
If they are selling the DVD, then put it On-Demand as well.
I prefer to buy my Sci-Fi series as mega-sets after then broadcast run is complete.
I'll be looking for the BSG mega-set sometime around X-mas 2009. Thank you in advance.

Thisis how I bought ST, ST-TNG, DS9, Voy, UFO, Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlett, Babylon 5, Space:1999, and so many more.

Peraonally I don't think Caprica should have been a full TV show, as in 20 Episodes.
They should have done it in a half series format (about 10-12 episodes) and have it run over 2 seasons but no more. We don't need a full, long drawn out story,
By Rob at 4:07 AM ON 02/06/09
I think it is a really bad move not to release this on Blu-ray. I know that if it is not initially released in high def I will not see myself buying it until the eventual Caprica Season 1 Blu-ray set... and that will be based on the quality of the series as a whole.
Lost sale.

Blu-Ray? Who cares? The majority of people don't have Blu-Ray. This is about making a quick buck.
As the unemployment numbers continue to rise, more people will be canceling their cable service to save money. BSG now shows the next day on SciFi.com and Hulu.com.
This is just a way for SciFi/NBC Universal to get more money from its investment because of fears that it won't be able to recoup costs with declining advertising revenues. It's disappointing.

What is with you people? You’re all so typical of sci-fi nerds - pathetically cynical and negative. Put your comic books down, take a bath and get a life!
I am dying to see Caprica - the series looks phenomenal and is being brought to us by the same geniuses that brought us the greatest show ever to air on TV (BSG). And now true fans won't have to wait until 2010 to see the series premiere? This is awesome news. And for only $19.99 or less, which I am sure it will be at Amazon. This is a great deal! Thanks Sci-Fi!

Like it or not, Sci-fi is moving toward the new way of doing business where video entertainment is concerned. They've had success with the Stargate movies direct to DVD and, in this way, they can maximize the financial potential of the product, especially a highly anticipated product such as Caprica, by offering the DVD first and then, at some point down the road, offering the product on the channel.
In recent years, there have been a number of TV movies that have been broadcast and made available on DVD at the same time: Razor, The Andromeda Strain miniseries, 24:Redemption. They obviously have had success with this or companies wouldn't be doing it.
I think we're going to see more and more with TV movies and perhaps even series, of companies offering the DVD or download first to those willing to pay the premium price above what they already pay for cable and then, later, offering it on the air. Especially with shows and movies that are expensive to produce as Stargate, BSG, Caprica and similar series.
By The Phoenix at 1:09 PM ON 02/06/09
They're probably doing it this way so that if the #'s on the DVD Salex suck (I doubt they would!) they can scale back and/or bail on the entire project. It's actually a logical way to proceed and the additional information on the DVD will allow people to discuss it online and allow them to make changes to the 1st season before it goes into production.
By Dax at 1:40 PM ON 02/06/09
In my opinnion this doesn't have to be the ripp off some are expecting.
After all "they" did sell the Galactica mini series and the first season seperatly.
Of course that dosn't mean that "they" mid pull a Razor on us agtain.
Personaly I'm looking forward to see the Caprica pilot - can't wait for the DVD becoming availble in Europe - and until then I reserve judgment on the series to come.
By darthbono at 1:47 PM ON 02/06/09
they might as well release the dvd on april 1 aka april fool'sday because at the rate there going that's the only way the fan's would take it seriously
By McTex at 1:55 PM ON 02/06/09
Darthbono - these above comments are not the sentiments of the fans. These are the same people who said they would refuse to watch BSG because Starbuck's gender was changed. These are the same people who run to blog every time Moore does something they don't understand. These are foolish small minded little people who have way too much free time, play with figurines and have never created anything great themselves, thus their need to embody a cynic's critique.
By Dave Creek at 2:25 PM ON 02/06/09
Please, folks, just calm down! There's plenty of other new stuff out there to immerse yourself in while you're waiting for Caprica, in whatever form you're willing to commit to.
If you know Caprica's going to be in an eventual box set, just wait for it! You know, you might want to read a book in the meantime. Robert Heinlein, Arthur Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, have decades worth of material, most of it much better than most TV SF, that will fill that time.
Yeah, I know -- that's a lot of old stuff. But there's plenty of newer material out there just as good -- John Scalzi, Tobias Buckell, Paul Melko, among many others.

My DVR has an automatic recording that always records SCIFI on Friday nights no matter what is on. I am beginning to believe that SCIFI would be treated better if it was owned by Fox and not NBC. NBC is not very friendly to SCIFI shows and always fails to promote and support the channel. The suits at NBC seem to despise making anything to do with SCIFI. I do not like NewsCorp in general, but I am starting to think we should encourage NBC to sell SCIFI to them to get a fair amount of support for our programs. The vast majority of reruns of GOOD shows came from Fox and might have continued if the audience from Fox had been brought to SCIFI and the smaller viewer numbers on SCIFI might have been enough for a cable channel. Right now Terminator, Dollhouse and other SCIFI type shows are beginning to be shown on Broadcast channels and will likely not get strong enough ratings for broadcast but would be considered successful on a cable channel and SCIFI should be the place on the dial for them. Sadly they will be cancelled after a few episodes and later rerun on SCIFI but not allowed to run the complete story line they should have run. You would think that NBC being the lowest rated of the broadcast networks might try a GOOD SCIFI show in prime time and if the numbers were to low for them but good enough for a cable channel like SCIFI, move the show to cable but continue to produce it. Ron Moore has such a show coming up on Fox but when it was offered to NBC the suits said it was too SciFi-Ish and passed it off allowing Fox to pick it up. I believe the show is being produced by NBC Universal Media Studio (go figure), maybe it will be another House that NBC passed up on in the same way yet it is a hit on both Fox and now USA..

After watching BSG tonight , i can began to see the lead into Caprica . the story line might really be interesting. I am curious who the enemy will be for some one to fight. Sadly there has to be an enemy to cause conflict or noone will watch.

Watch it from Netflix I reserved it today.

Set half a century before the "Battlestar Galactica" series, this feature film follows industrialist Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz) as he harnesses powerful technology to create the first-ever Cylon in the wake of a personal tragedy. Gravely concerned about Graystone's ethics, attorney Joseph Adama (Esai Morales), father of future admiral William Adama, becomes a fervent opponent of the powerful scientist and businessman.

I was aggravated at the BSG Finale until I found this Caprica Series Detailed Review. The final five Cylons could not reveal anymore than they did because it would have blown the Caprica pilot!
The BSG Finale makes a lot more sense after reading it.

Battlestar Galactica is over with an ending impossible at present to conceive of on planet earth at the momen. Example would be like billionaires and up suddenly letting go of all their fortunes and let the world loath a bit.

Why not renew the Star Trek franchise after the coming movie? Will cable and satellite be free like WiFi and the coffee shops and later the world sphere?

Not only is it not available in Blu-ray, iTunes does not sell it in a HD format. My guess is that it was shot using SD equipment.
If it is not HD I will not watch it.
@ the people who were saying NBC does not do good SCIFI, Chuck and Heroes are NBC products. They are quite good. NBC just needs to learn that the SCIFI demographic are those of us with a good education and unlimited disposable income.
I don't want to be insulting, however, reality shows and game shows like Deal or No Deal are not the way to pick up the best advertisers. Please, move chuck to SCIFI if you must, but give us a full season and promote it to its full value.
