'Get your ass to Mars!' A new Total Recall is on the way

\'Get your ass to Mars!\' A new \<i\>Total Recall\<\/i\> is on the way

Total Recall—the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi action movie based on a Philip K. Dick story—may be headed for a remake, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Neal H. Moritz and his Original Films are in final negotiations to develop and produce for Columbia a contemporary version of the movie, which was originally directed by Paul Verhoeven.

The original, based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," follows a man haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars who buys a literal dream vacation from a company that sells implanted memories. The man comes to believe he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony, where he fights to overthrow a despotic ruler controlling the production of air.

The movie is a fan favorite for a variety of reasons: It features a fight in which Sharon Stone kicks Arnold's butt, some luridly graphic special effects, a three-breasted hooker and the famous line "Get your ass to Mars!" The movie grossed $261 million worldwide.

Moritz told the trade paper that he hopes the advancements in technology and state-of-the-art visual effects can help tell the Recall story in a fresh way.

Hello! that's all they got ? Better "SGI or 3D" tech? So that was the only reason this movie became a hit ? Not the story or the characters nor the acting ? America is so great! where talentless people can make millions for put up garbage! we wonder why we in decline?

Be responsible and put your name on the article!

"SCIFI" STOP BEHAVING LIKE A NAZI "SS"!

By Vanity at 3:39 AM ON 02/26/09

Jeez, can't they just leave these movies alone! Neverending Story, and this too? How long do they have to wait nowadays before remaking movies - Terminator 2 was released in 1991, should they remake that too?

By Adoe at 5:18 AM ON 02/26/09

"Neal H. Moritz and his Original Films are" not really very original films are you Neal.

Save us from remakes. Cok Monkeys.

By Diago at 5:31 AM ON 02/26/09

I see the "no original idea department" is hard at work again. How long will be before we see another rehashing of Lord of the Rings? Hollywood needs to take re-makers out and shoot them.

By Mandy at 5:46 AM ON 02/26/09

A contemporary version? I didn't realize 1990 was so uncontemporary? I guess we were drawing on cave walls and inventing fire way back then...

God, how I hate all these remakes. Every week there are articles for about three or four or even five new remakes of Scifi, horror and fantasy classics. And I don't consider 1990 that long ago, to be honest.

By Mandy at 5:51 AM ON 02/26/09

The shallow explanations as to why people liked this film listed in this article makes me think the author of this article was not a real fan of this movie. What about the intriguing plot? The question of if it was all a virtual reality spy fantasy or not that is still debated by the fans. The acting, the original story, no, no one could have liked those things.

And yes, Scifi Wire doesn't seem to really want to know what we think. Notice that they won't allow the star ratings on the articles now. What? Too many bad reviews on articles you hoped would get positive responses?

By Strick at 8:16 AM ON 02/26/09

I assume this version is going to all but ignore the original, brilliant Philip K Dick short story, too? At least as a remake, this one will merely be butchering a mediocre movie this time.

By Storm1968 at 8:46 AM ON 02/26/09

Got to agree with Mandy on this subject. I can see making a 'reboot' or 'reimagining' of a movie from the 50s or 60s... heck even the 40s, but all the movies we grew up on? I've seen the horror classics (My Bloody Valentine, Friday the 13th, Last House on the Left) being 'remade' with more blood and gore than the original and the original story lines 'rewritten' to make the movie 'more modern'... puleeze! Leave these movies alone! At least take something of substance.. something that really lacked when it was made because of poor budget, poor story writing, or poor FX work. I know there are a couple of late 70's or 80's movies that, if they had been done now, might have faired better or been done better (have to wrack my brain to remember the titles, but I don't have one at the moment).

By Steve R. at 8:48 AM ON 02/26/09

What is sad is that there are a lot of stories that have yet to be put into film. Why do remakes, if there is new content available. Would be good to see Jack Vance, Jack Chalker stories put into film.

By Imagica at 9:34 AM ON 02/26/09

Wait what made the film was Arnold, Michael Ironside, Ronnie Cox, Sharon Stone, etc.

The film was a great sci fi action film. It is well loved. Why remake this?

I am not against remakes but the film is only 19 years old and it still looks good today!

Are they going to remake the Princess Bride next? With Jessica Simpson as Buttercup and Wesley/Man in Black/Dread Pirate Roberts played by Justin Timberlake?!

This is a bad idea this Total Recall movie!

Now if they want to remake it closer to the story, the Arnie film really did not follow it. Then sure.

By christopherson at 10:02 AM ON 02/26/09

look i disagree to a remake. total recal is a great movie. movies arent the same for me who cares about cgi bring back the stunts and cornie puppets. that is wat recked starwars. only arnie can play that role cause he is larger then life.

By Thomas at 10:09 AM ON 02/26/09

There are literally millions of pages of really great SF on the shelves at any bookstore that would make great films - and a lot of authors, like Larry Niven and Spider Robinson, to name only two, that should have been immortalized in film long ago. To hit closer to home, I think Sci-Fi should also consider this, instead of constantly filming "original" stories about giant reptiles and alien monster invasions.

By Highway Man at 10:25 AM ON 02/26/09

Total Recall is a classic scifi action movie. It is one of Arnold's best and right up there with Predator and Terminator.

I foresee epic failure and if you want to remake something you should have to wait at least 50 years before getting the go ahead unless you are remaking something that was crap the first time, which Total Recall was not.

By Deadlegs at 11:27 AM ON 02/26/09

In the words of attack of the show...... FAIL IT!!!!!

If anything make a sequel. " and not the crappy TV show." I can see it now... After all that Douglas Quaid has been through he has been elected governor of Mars. DAMMIT!!! that has already happened.

By What_the_HELL? at 11:34 AM ON 02/26/09

DO NOT TOUCH THIS MOVIE!!! As someone mentioned above, 1990 was not that long ago. The movie was AWESOME for it's time and is still very enjoyable. If you want to remake a modern movie redo The Fifth Element. The costumes and aliens were ridiculous and all of the casting except for Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich was atrocious.

By shroudedwolf at 11:51 AM ON 02/26/09

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

(Don't you dare touch The Fifth Element either!) GAH!

By sparrrownightmare at 12:13 PM ON 02/26/09

Yet ANOTHER example of the fact that Hollywood couldn't come up with a truly original picture if there lives depended on it. I think Hollywood needs to go to Recall for a session or two...

By wxman at 1:01 PM ON 02/26/09

For me it was Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack that made the move so memorable.

By jolinar at 1:28 PM ON 02/26/09

You know people, I of course like "Total Recall" my sister bought it for me, on video for my birthday about 5 years ago & I still love it. And as for the tv show "Total Recall 2070", I watched it on Showtime every week & enjoyed every minute of it (even though it was a prequel to the movie, & kind of crappy).
And as for "The Fifth Element", I was the only one in the theater when I saw that movie, & now it's a cult classic. So Hollywood should not touch any of those movies at all!!!
P.S. If they should remake any movie it should be the original SUPERMAN movie because that movie sucked ass. I got nothing Against Richard Donner or the late Christoher Reeves but they made Superman look & act like such a wuss!!!

By Nausicaa'sLover at 1:43 PM ON 02/26/09

I really feel like swearing my ass off here, but I'll restrain myself! I can't believe it! Next thing you know they're going to literally remake Star Wars, or Alien! You can't touch these movies! It's bad enough that they're remaking Nightmare on Elm St. and Hellraiser! These are all movies that as far as I'm concerned (and apparently others as well) are still a part of the contemporary film era. These movies still hold up by todays standards (compared to the first 70 years of film-making) and remaking them only serves to inflate the ego-centric assertion that anything less than a CGI-laden picture is so ancient that it's beneath our times. The only thing that seems truly out-dated in Total Recall are the "futuristic" cars (which actually seemed pretty out-dated even for 1990).

There's what I call the Classic Era of movies and what I call the Contemporary Era. The 1970's were what I call the Transitional Era. During that time we were still making sci-fi and fantasy films in the old tradition (SFX-wise AND stylistically). But at the same time we started coming out with films that raised the bar to levels that had never been seen before-- or since. These were films that SO drastically changed the way we conceptualized the genres that we STILL haven't seen such a LEAP in style and concept . Of course these films are: Star Wars, Close Encounters, Alien, Star Trek: TMP, and a small handful of others (the only exception of course is 2001: A Space Odyssey-- the grandaddy of all modern sci-fi, which came out close to ten years before these films!). And when the 80's finally emerged it was all over. The new era had truly begun. So to ALREADY remake these films is just ludicrous. It would be like taking all the classic sci-fi of the 50's
and remaking them in the 70's. We should at least wait until there is another such giant leap in style and content (as in the mid-to-late seventies) before we attempt this kind of a thing, perhaps in another decade or two.
I've said my piece.

By WHO at 2:14 PM ON 02/26/09

"Total Recall" undoubtedly has the highest ASA/minute* of any movie ever filmed.

*ASA= Arnold Schwarzenegger "ARRRGGGHHHs"

By Don't at 2:49 PM ON 02/26/09

Don't.....just.....Don't. Why not redo your awful Riverworld series into something palatible....

By My name's not Quaid! at 2:57 PM ON 02/26/09

I first saw this movie when I was 13. It blew my mind and its one of the films that made me interested in pursuing a career in theater or movies. Douglas Quaid was one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's best performances and the movie was some of Paul Verhoeven's best work as a director. What justification is there for a remake? Better effects technology? Bah! Total Recall was given Special Achievement in Visual Effects at the Academy Awards. The effects used to create the world of tomorrow including Mars and the Martian colony are impressive even by today's standards. Philip K. Dick wrote hundreds of other short stories -- Moritz should film one of them.

By scifi-ED at 2:58 PM ON 02/26/09

Hollywood idiots. Aparently nothing is out of bounds. So, how about Back to the future, how about Independence day, or even the Matrix; it's almost been ten years, go for it.

Thomas is absolutely right, so many great novels out there. Hollywood is obviously filled with a bunch of people that can't read.

By Carl at 2:59 PM ON 02/26/09

I can't believe people are saying the no original idea crap.

Wouldn't the first movie not be a original idea since it is from a book?
Retards!

By Zorro 6 at 5:59 PM ON 02/26/09

Ummm... okay, I'll chime in to disagree with one important qualification. IF they re-make this in way that is more faithful to the original source material (i.e. the PKD story the first one was loosely based on) then go for it. If it's just going to re-hash the original movie version... why bother?

By jstew17894 at 9:33 PM ON 02/26/09

See, crap like this is why I've stopped going to the movies. I don't think the fools in hollywood have had a truly original idea in at least fifteen years, unless one counts the endless pot-comedies and judd apatow movies that have been made lately. Even the matrix, for all its awesome effects, was just Tron with kung fu. What's next....a Jaws remake?

By gorehound696 at 11:04 PM ON 02/26/09

Time to boycott Hollywood.I no longer go out to theaters and I don't buy much nor do i have to rent any films.I am fed up with YARM (Yet Another ReMake).
I hate these film execs who have their noses up someones butt nor do they have any brains left to make us a decent original scxience fition movie.Just YARM after YARM...........
frak you this movie will in fact fail hard..

By tadmaz at 10:28 AM ON 02/27/09

Total Recall is one of Arnold's best, it should not be touched. AAARRGHHHHHH!!! Hollywood should get its ass to Mars without spacesuits and have their eyeballs pop out.

By Dennis at 10:37 AM ON 02/28/09

Remake, Remake... make it look better, dumb down the plot. Yuk.

Do the people in Hollywood even READ books?

And what is up with SfiFi?

Saturday Night, a giant [INSERT BEAST HERE] terrorizes [INSERT LOCATION HERE].

Here are some hints:

Riverworld: Follow the books until the second riverboat launches, then you have decades of riverside adventures.

Azimov: So many stories!

Heinlein: How about the Life and Times of Lazarus Long?

Brin: The Uplift series!

There are so many SF and Fantasy novels out there. If you can't think of anything NEW, try Dragonriders of Pern, or the Ship Who Sang.... Or try an Orson Scott Card series... read some Harry Harrison books...

By Art at 11:18 PM ON 02/28/09

I agree with everyone here, but mostly I agree with Dennis. So many books, why waste time on remakes? You want good funny SF? Try Piers Anthony's Xanth stories. Good ensemble stories try Roger Zelazny's Amber.
Good adventure and romance, try Edgar Rice Burroughs done right. Slightly x rated try John Norman's Gor stories. But be true to the books. Treat them as you would Titanic or Gone With The Wind. People will go. The proof? Dark Knight, Spiderman, Iron Man, Lord of the Rings, The Fifth Element to name a few. Well maybe not Fifth Element but at least that was well done, and DVD sales are not too shabby. Thats All Folks!

By gothboy469 at 12:21 AM ON 03/03/09

NOI!!!!! Unless Vin Diesel plays the lead, Arnold plays the evil Govenator and Michelle Rodriguez plays the hooker (not the three boob one...)!

By lordofthelefthand777 at 7:13 PM ON 07/05/09

Terrible Ideal Hollywood needs to stop all this godawful remake crap. This movie will fail hard.
