Green Lantern DVD movie details announced

\<i\>Green Lantern\<\/i\> DVD movie details announced

Hal Jordan takes on his first mission in the animated straight-to-DVD movie Green Lantern: First Flight, the fifth entry in the popular DVD series of DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies, which was announced Friday at WonderCon in San Francisco.

A co-production of Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Brothers Animation, the hero's first-ever full-length animated film is set for release by Warner Home Video on July 28.

Green Lantern: First Flight will be available as a special edition two-disc version on DVD at a suggested retail price of $29.98 and on Blu-Ray disc at $34.99, as well as single disc DVD for $19.98.

Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) voices Hal Jordan, aka Green Lantern. Victor Garber is the villainous Sinestro, Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) is Boodikka, and Michael Madsen is Kilowog.

Produced by animation legend Bruce Timm, Green Lantern: First Flight is helmed by Lauren Montgomery (Wonder Woman, Superman Doomsday) from a script by Alan Burnett (The Batman).

In the film, Jordan is recruited to join the Green Lantern Corps and placed under the supervision of respected senior Lantern Sinestro. The Earthling soon discovers his mentor is actually the central figure in a secret conspiracy that threatens the philosophies, traditions and hierarchy of the entire Green Lantern Corps. Hal must quickly hone his newfound powers and combat the treasonous Lanterns within the ranks to maintain order in the universe.

Wasn't there like a special on the Wonder Woman DVD that stated they were making this? Seriously Scifi stop being so stupid. You post news like its actually news but your freaking Months Old.

By PALADIN at 7:37 AM ON 02/28/09

I just hope the animation is better....
I get so tired of cartoon superheroes with teeny-tiny waists and shoulders that look 3 feet wide.
Broad shoulders is one thing, but the animated Justice League crew looked like a a pro football squad -- with shoulder pads on.

Sorry, John Stewart is the better Green Lantern! Hal Jordan has always been a jerk in the comics. I was disappointed when he was resurrected in the comic. The whole yellow alien insect creature that DC served up to wipe away Hal's monstrous crimes as Parallax was weak, weak, weak!

By Ric17 at 9:59 AM ON 02/28/09

Yeah, Malachi, like we all saw the Wonder Woman DVD extras... That was something that everyone just happened to catch...

Great work Sci-fi! This is the first time for many of us hearing this actually, and I actually keep mysel fairly up to date with the DC animated stuff...

Isn't the Wonder Woman DVD supposed to hit the stores next Tuesday? I realize that *some* people will have seen the extras already, but *everybody*?

By chrichton at 10:58 AM ON 02/28/09

I had heard about a Green Lantern movie, but I though it was going to be live action not animated

By Rob at 11:08 AM ON 02/28/09

Chrichton, this Green Lantern movie is part of an ongoing series of DC animated DVDs. They've done Doomsday: The Death of Superman, Justice League: New Frontier, Batman: Gotham Knight, & a Wonder Woman one to be released in a week or two. The live-action Green Lantern feature is still a go.

By Old School DC Fan at 11:27 AM ON 02/28/09

The vocal talent for this DVD is worth its price. Looking foward to it

By Malachi at 12:20 PM ON 02/28/09

Actually I haven't seen the Wonder Woman movie nor the extra's. It was announced nearly 3 months ago that there was gonna be a special on the dvd about the Green Lantern Animated movie.

By kirkjt at 12:22 PM ON 02/28/09

Hal Jordan is the ONLY Green Lantern. All others ae just supporting cast.

This one looks very good and I hope the live action version is made. I know it sounds pretty firm but Warner's has not done well with much outside of Batman films.

Thanks Rob, appreciate that

Awsome, the Wonder woman film was very enjoyable. I download it off of a torrent a couple of weeks ago and burned it to a dvd. I highly recommend it to any comic fan. This news of the Green Lantern film is wonderful. I'm really glad Marvel and DC are doing this animated films. Hulk Vs was kick ass.

It may have been "announced" on the Wonder Woman DVD, but I haven't watched that DVD, so this item is "news" to me. Also, it would seem this article has "details" other than that Green Lantern is "Coming Soon on DVD."

This article tells us when it's coming out (July 28), what formats it will be released in, what the cost of each of those will be, who is producing it (Bruce Timm), who is directing it (Lauren Montgomery), who wrote the script (Alan Burnett), and which actors will be voicing the roles (Christopher Meloni, Victor Garber, Tricia Helfer, and Michael Madsen). All of those seem like significant bits of "news" to me.

I'm glad to see this article.

Thank you, SciFi Wire for giving us this information and not including any op-ed comments in a straightforward news report.

Why arent they using the original green lanturn wouldnt it make more since .

By Thom at 5:32 PM ON 02/28/09

Alan Scott from the 1940s? No, that would make no sense at all since the Hal Jordan version is the one DC is currently publishing and he is the "primary Green Lantern" even though Alan Scott came before him.

By magicmind at 7:46 PM ON 02/28/09

Sorry, John Stewart is a reboot loser, Hal Jordan will always be the best man with no fear!

By Rafeblows at 8:14 PM ON 02/28/09

Come now magicmind , John Stewart isn't as big a loser as Rafe is.

My laws it’s hot! This flower is wiltin’!” and “Honey, y’all have positively ruined my alcohol!”

The "Original Green Lantern" such as it were, goes by the name of Sentinel now I believe and his origins are entirely mystical not science based like Hal Jordans.

(MINOR SPOILER WARNING)
I just saw the trailer for this along with the Wonder Woman movie Friday night at Wondercon. It looked great, I can't wait for it! I'm assuming that is what's going to be on the Wonder Woman DVD, which BTW you should all pick up since it's freaking AMAZING. Exactly what a WW movie should be.
Back to GL though, Im glad they went with Hal for this. The comics by Geoff Johns are the best in years. Also, the producers hinted at the panel there was more GL animation down the road, when the live action movie get released. Probably based on the Sinestro Corp War, since Sinestro appear in his SC costume in the trailer for this one.

And the whole Hal vs. John debate? Hal is the iconic GL, get used to it. And sure, Hal became Parallax and did horrible things. But John's no angel either. Or did you forget that is overconfidence and gross negligence led to the genocide of an entire race? Just sayin'. I love all the GL characters, their faults and demons are part of what makes them interesting. If they do the SC War in animation, I'm really looking forward to the dynamic between a seasoned Hal, John and Guy (Gardner).

By CoverGurl at 10:26 AM ON 03/01/09

Oh and Alan Scott does go by "Green Lantern" again. The "Sentinel" name never really caught on (thankfully).

By 32bpwr3 at 4:12 PM ON 03/01/09

I am excited to hear that there will be a "Green Lantern" direct-to-DVD animation! I've been looking forward to getting the "Wonder Woman" animation this week, and will be planning on buying "Green Lantern" when it comes out this summer.

By Groovy Superhero at 4:28 PM ON 03/01/09

Hi, I covered this breaking news in without getting paid on January 20: http://www.groovysuperhero.com/2009/01/next-dcu-animated-feature-in-blackest.html

By sanga at 8:42 PM ON 03/01/09

Sorry but Jon Stewart, Guy Loudmouth and Kyle are just reboot losers. Green Lantern was a great character for 30 yrs. And some schmoe comes in ignores the past writers and character history to an edgy new story and devolve a great hero to sell comics. The parrallax was weak but the only way to reverse what that idiot writer did when he made Jorden go darkside. And yes there is a live action Green Lantern movie planned which DC is hoping to tie into a movie universe like Marvel has done. Its completly seperate from the animated feature this summer.

By Scooby Doo Doo at 12:03 AM ON 03/03/09

Guy Gardner isn't a reboot character. He appeared as early as issue #59 in the series, and was created by Gil Kane just like Hal Jordan was, as a backup. Which makes a good Green Lantern movie series easy to do, you just have to change GL's every 3 movies.

By tarv at 9:07 PM ON 03/11/09

John Steward rocks as a green lantern he was the first of black super-hero, but at the tirme period the writers did not give him, the proper intro to the corp. even in his own comic series he was not give the props it was not till justice league where bruce tim did him justice. when will black superheros get their props in the comic book world.

By Vertigo at 6:40 AM ON 04/19/09

Though John is cool and Guy a hot Head and Kyle creative Hal is teh linch Pin bringing in the SciFi aspect of DC Universe I'm glad they are all there.
Plus one of the 1st Black Superheroes was Black Lightning for DC 1977ish still got the comic somewhere.
