In WALL-E upset, Kung Fu Panda dominates Annie Awards
Kung Fu Panda won big at this year's Annie Awards, besting Disney/Pixar's WALL-E for the top prize of best animated feature film, Variety reported.
The International Animated Film Society bestowed 15 awards on the movie, its home-video tie-in, Secrets of the Furious Five, and a related Activision game, out of the Annies' 24 categories at a ceremony Friday at the University of California, Los Angeles.
The Annies—which are voted on by animation industry professionals and fans—have predicted the Oscar preferences in animated feature films every year but one since the category was introduced.
Kung Fu Panda also marks the first time since 2001's Shrek that DreamWorks Animation has seen one of its films take the Annies' top prize, which typically goes to Pixar.
On the TV side, Adult Swim's Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II snagged three awards; Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender took two; and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment's Futurama: The Beast With a Billion Backs earned the organization's home-video trophy.

You've got to be kidding. Panda was fun, but the animation was nowhere near as exciting as WALL-E. What are these judges smoking?

I had more fun with Panda than wall-e. Both were great. In the end it's not the technology that matters. I think Pixar has gotten a bit complacent. From a SF standpoint wall-e was not that innovative. Cars was loved by the little ones, but we've seen that store many times before, just not with talking cars. Up I've seen on mythbusters and the news, expect not so extreme. I have no desire to see it. I was expecting more when Lassiter took over Disney Animation. But I guess not.
