A new trailer has gone live for the upcoming five-night airing of Torchwood: Children of Earth on BBC America later this year in advance of the panel at New York Comic Con this weekend. You can watch it after the jump.
Here's how BBC describes the new third season: Captain Jack (John Barrowman), Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) and Ianto Jones (Gareth David Lloyd) are still coming to terms with the death of two of their closest friends.
Despite their pain, they have a job to do. This time they are faced with their fiercest threat to date—one that throws the future of Torchwood and the entire human race spiraling into danger. They battle against the odds, but do they stand a chance of saving mankind? Torchwood is executive-produced by Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner. The producer is Peter Bennett (Doctor Who).

5 episodes. Thats all they are making for 2009? Dr. Who nd Torchwood are great shows. Where the love this year?

Woot! Looks great! Hope BBC-America airs it as soon as the BBC does in the UK.

Damn! I hit the button too many times. SciFi Wire, can you delete two of those? Thanks.
And sorry about the triple posts. :(

Looks good! I wonder if anybody new will join the cast? Maybe Noel Clarke (Mickey Smith)?
By Tril0x at 11:58 PM ON 02/05/09
It really doesn't matter if they cast anyone new or not. From what I read earlier, they are only making 5 episodes and then the show is over. Those 5 episodes are to air in the UK over the course of a single week. Who knows when we will get to see them.
By breeda at 11:59 PM ON 02/05/09
Oh I was so worried about the plotting since they decided to do it miniseries style this go around. but this looks great! A new direction for them to go in. which we should expect from the people behind Dr Who by now, but never do. BBC America better have their stuff together and air it quickly after it airs in the UK. Their rating could use the extra juice this will definatly bring.

Torchwood series 3 will air on BBC America early Summer. Doctor Who and Torchwood have been scaled back this year to give time for production staffing changes. Obviously Doctor Who is going to be back in production in 2010. I have not heard anything about the demise of Torchwood. Considering the huge success it is in the UK and here I think it is premature to think that this is it.

"they are only making 5 episodes and then the show is over"
Best news I've heard all week. Terrible writing, terrible acting, terrible show. Good riddance.
By growger at 8:29 AM ON 02/06/09
"Torchwood" sounds like a great spin-off to "Doctor Who". It would be nice to see it here in the U.S.. Why isn't the Sci Fi Channel airing it? And if they due, I hope they start from the beginning so we get the full understanding of the show
By mknopp31 at 8:42 AM ON 02/06/09
"Torchwood" is an adult-oriented spin-off of Doctor Who. Defintely not for children. BBC America has aired edited versions of the show but the DVDs for series 1 and 2 are availible in the US.

BTW Bob:

So, why did you read the link anyway?

I can't wait to see the new series, but I'm really disappointed that it's only 5 episodes. Understandable that they need to deal with staff changes but that's a long time to wait. I hope it comes back in full force the following year with series 5 of Doctor Who.

I loved the show until they had all the homosexual scenes and content. Call me any bad name you want, but that kind of lifestyle is not liked by the majority. If the writing is solid enough, no show has to resort to sex of any kind to make it successful. My wife and I stopped watching the show in the first season when Jack kissed another man. Disgusting.
By Mira at 4:26 PM ON 02/06/09
Sorry, but Nathan? You're being a bigot. The massive majority of shows, good and bad, use sex. Do you stop watching them too, the instant they show a heterosexual lovemaking scene?
I LOVE the show for the reason that it shows non-heterosexual sexualities. I am thoroughly sick of hetero lovemaking scenes - I want something closer to what I, as a gay woman, can relate to. And, as an SF/F fan, I want it in the genre of my choice. Torchwood fits those bills, and is decently written too!
By Blake at 7:37 PM ON 02/06/09
Thankfully, Nathan, the show was not written for people like you. I would ask the same as Mira - have you stopped watching the remainder of television, save for Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune?
By HappyBrit at 8:59 AM ON 02/07/09
It's so comforting in these times of change to know that we can rely on the Americans to maintain the bigotry. Good on you, Nathan. Keeping your country's reputation safe!
By Benji at 9:03 AM ON 02/07/09
Quite amusing that Nathan waited until Jack kissed a man before exiting. Gwen kissed another woman in episode 2, that was okay then, eh? ;-)
By auntie at 11:58 AM ON 02/07/09
Interesting that Nathan is still checking up on the next series. If you find something 'disgusting' why come back for more? Homphobia is the only disgusting thing I can see on this page.

where is Doctor Who season five. It's already on in the UK, is there no US network that will air it??? BBC America will makes us wait an eternity for the new Torchwood. I think the fact that captain Jack is the lead male hero is fantastic. The sexy scenes only add to the shows charm.

Displaced Brit living in USA -
Grew up with Dr Who - SO glad it's back as good if not better than ever and throughly enjoy the spin off Torchwood -
about time the Dr Who world expanded! But VERY disappointed in hearing about the fact that only 5 episodes are planned
Lets have more of both Torchwood and the new Dr Who please
What about a Martha Jones Series too?
I look forward to more great ideas from the writers and many more episodes of both to come.

Only 5 episodes? Terrible! I, for one, COMPLETELY AGREE with Nathan. The show is fantastic but I can do without the homoerotic bits, thank you very much. Funny how you all call it homophobic and bigotry when someone simply VOICES THEIR OPINION, even though you are the ones who have so obviously quaffed the Koolaid of accepting anything and everything! Some of us still have morals and values--and don't forget, we still cling to our guns and religion too. Growger, come out from under your rock, the series has already been shown in the US for 2 seasons!

BBCA will air Torchwood:Children of earth within a few hours of its BBC1 showings
By sally at 7:27 PM ON 03/05/09
Arnieblue - it would seem that you've been dipping into the Koolaid yourself (since you call the show fantastic) - just how do your gun totin' religious morals allow you to continue to watch Torchwood - at least poor narrow-minded Nathan had the gumption to stick to his guns and stop watching - does anyone else think that Arnie doth protest too much?
By pocketotter at 9:31 PM ON 03/06/09
I love that there can be a hundred thousand shows with the heteronormative being the sole content, but a gay kiss or two makes one show disgusting. Jack has always been pansexual, from his first appearance in Dr Who season one (well, of the new series), it was never exactly a secret. And given that most statistics I've heard indicate that up to one in ten people have homosexual tendencies, it's still vastly under-represented in television. (Also love the pointing out of the hypocrisy - girl on girl is A-OK, but boy on boy is just gross, apparently? Feel free not to watch if you don't like same sex relationships, but at least be consistent.)
Despite that, I actually agree that some of the writing and acting is bad, but that's the CHARM of it. It's not supposed to win awards, it's just a good fun show. Can't wait for season three.
By idontgiveasmurf at 4:26 PM ON 04/07/09
I want to know why just five? Can the writers not come up with anything or is it because they can't pay the actors cause of the economy???????
By Erik at 7:55 PM ON 04/24/09
I can't wait for Torchwood. Should be amazing.
The reason why they're doing 5 shows this series is because they didn't want there to be a heavy saturation of Torchwood. There's so much that they want to do that they don't want to burn the show out so early on. Also, with RTD leaving Who, there's bound to be some delays with Torchwood.

The FACT is that even with all the homo haters out there, Torchwood is a hit! They can say whatever they want. Still, Torchwood would be a hit! And if/when it comes back in 2010...Captain Jack will still be Kissing, the homo haters will still say whatever it is they say, and Torchwood will still be a hit :o) Ain't it funny how that works?
