The first Star Trek Blu-rays will beam down in April and May

The first \<i\>Star Trek\<\/i\> Blu-rays will beam down in April and May

Our buddy at TrekMovie.com broke the news today that CBS and Paramount will release the first sets of its Star Trek franchise on Blu-ray in April and May, right around the May 8 release date of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movie.

A box set of season one of the original TV series comes out April 28. Following on May 12 are collections of TOS films: Star Trek Original Motion Picture Collection (The Motion Picture through Star Trek VI) and the Star Trek Motion Picture Trilogy (II, III and IV). The latter set will also come out on DVD on May 12.

The season one box set will feature a Blu-ray transfer of the high-definition "remastered" episodes, which were previously released on DVD in November 2007, but the Blu-ray set will also allow you to view the episodes with their original 1960s visual effects.

The new movie sets feature high-definition remasters of the theatrical versions of the six films, along with new special features in HD. Click through to TrekMovie.com for more details.

I do really like how TOS Season One has both the original versions and the versions with new FXs.

I'll wait for some purchased reviews, but if all seems right, I'll be buying this. I'm holding off on the movie collection for now.

Hopefully there will be a play-all option when they Blue-ray the STNG's.

You can put a bearskin on a cow it still is a cow, in other words there is no visible difference between a DVD film and a Blue Ray film other then the fee!
People at CBS and Paramount can better lower the price for a DVD set the profit of one set will be lower but they sell a lot more, I no magazine in Holland where they have a whole lot of Star trek films sets not selling on the shelf, because of the ridiculously high prices, its a pity.

Arend: you either have problems with your vision, or your equipment. There is a huge difference.

I bought TOS long ago at $16 per 2 episode DVD. Spent roughly $750 for TOS. How about a $50 series upgrade from standard DVD.

By WannaBeatle at 9:24 PM ON 02/16/09

this is all cool news, but, I still have to upgrade a bunch of my equipment. I'm still playing music on a cylinder (I've been hearing great things about these long playing records)

By pantera at 3:17 AM ON 02/17/09

@rayhigh

in this case he is right, blueray cannot show you what is not there, the base material is stil old tv, there is no way that you make that better, Modern digital matererial yes, good quality movie stock, sure. But ST was a low budget tv show that used the cheapest of the cheapest, you can't compensate for that, ntsc crap won't become glorious hd just bij banging it on a modern medium and saying it.

what they could do is take the dvd material and put it on 1 disk

By DarkHawke at 3:51 AM ON 02/17/09

@pantera: Have you actually seen the remastered Original Star Trek? I've watched those episodes all my life and I have NEVER seen them look so good! The new effects are of course gorgeous, but they have cleaned up and rezzed up the original footage mightily. In some cases, it's good enough to reveal how not-ready-for-high-res the sets really were (which, given the capabilities of TV at the time, they didn't have to be). Trust me, the Blu-ray releases will be WELL worth the investment!

BTW, the Original Star Trek was far from being a "low budget" TV show. Its budget was in fact HIGHER than the average for hour-long dramas of that era. For years, the look and special effects of the show were cutting-edge for TV and unmatched. You can't call it "low budget" because shows today, FORTY YEARS later with immeasurably more sophisticated and higher-tech production equipment, look so much better!

No I don't have problems with my vision, see it this way a old record from the Beatles remastered on CD is still a old record but a little cleaner yes but no CD quality, and that's the same with TOS on Tape and DVD a old record but a little cleaner, and again a little cleaner on Blue Ray, but by far no HD quality .

And the stockpile on TOS and other Startrek DVD is huge, there are about a 1000 or more sets for about 200 dollar each.

I possessed the Startrek movie's in the same store and they are still the same price about 79 dollar each as they where in 1998.

By Spamagnet at 8:53 AM ON 02/17/09

@Arend: TOS was originally shot on FILM, not on tape. It is extremely well-suited to Blu-ray.

By jw at 10:27 AM ON 02/17/09

@Arend: I was lucky enough to see the remastered series on high def already in my area. I also so it on standard definition on a different TV. There is a very large difference, especially with the new effects.

By Maltheus at 10:57 AM ON 02/17/09

Season 1 has been out on HD-DVD for sometime now. How about the remastered season's 2 and 3 already? How long does it take to slap them onto a disc, for crying out loud?

By The Movie Whore at 3:22 PM ON 02/17/09

I can't wait to buy it.

By file86@mail.com at 8:06 PM ON 02/18/09

The problem I have with these Bluray DVDs is that Paramount is a greedy, greedy corporation when it comes to the Star Trek franchise.

Most sites want $300-$600 for the complete series for TNG, DS9 and Voyager on regular DVD and they have been out forever!

I've gotten lucky and found TNG and DS9 for $150 new, but no such luck on Voyager and it wasn't as good as the other series.

I got the entire series of Buffy, Angel and Stargate for under $100 each. If Paramount did this with Star Trek they would sell TONS more I bet.

I guess I'll just have to Netflix these when they come out.

By Cavar at 8:10 PM ON 02/18/09

I've had the complete Voyager series in my Amazon cart for awhile now and just checked it after reading this article and it has increased $195 since it's been in my cart, LAME!

By JMY12 at 5:38 PM ON 02/21/09

The original Star trek was shot on film, so has a lot of detail... I remember I had a teacher who had 16mm prints of some of the old episodes... They looked great on a big screen!

By JediMistressDragon at 11:52 AM ON 03/03/09

Thereis a difference between a Blu-Ray DVD and a regualr one. The picture quality is so clear-like a window you can step through and join the action, you can believe it's that real. This is why we have a Blu-Ray player--had it for two years now.
And about time the original Star Trek to be on it--why I have not bought any of the regular DVD sets.

By itsme at 9:25 PM ON 05/01/09

The TOS video tapes were a transfer of the copies used for the syndicated TV broadcast. When they released the DVD sets, they were the same recordings, which means each episode was missing about 5 minutes of show. That part of each episode was removed for more advertisement space. Also since they were copies of copies, the quality wasn't very good...good enough for your 20" TV...but not good enough for today's standards. Thus when they remastered the set they found the most original film prints, digitized each frame, and cleaned/fixed everything...then they updated some effects in each episode that were obviously distracting due to the poor quality (by today's standards). If you don't want to buy them then don't...continue to watch your betamax off-the-air recordings...but I will be watching the Blue ray versions.

By Mike at 3:11 PM ON 09/25/09

Arend I must disagree with you. If you are not seeing a HUGE difference between standard DVD and Blu Ray on your system, Im inclined to believe there may be some problem with your equipment.

By Son of a Maui Portagee at 5:12 PM ON 09/26/09

@Mike

Actually there's no such thing as just dumping something on BD and it magically appears better. It all depends on the talent of the person responsible for remastering the film for the media chosen.

Thus having something on BD in no way automagically assures that it will look better than a properly mastered DVD.

I've been a film and video consumer for over 40 years and I can assure you just because the industry comes up with something that can provide a superior image is no guarantee that they'll actually release to the home a product that does. Especially, if someone manages to do a transfer to BD that rivals their theatrical releases. Marketing hype often takes precedent before maximum utilization of the advance itself.

Piracy fears trumps maximum quality every time. And, of course, leaving room to incrementally "improve" the image on the re-release is just a smart marketing move as long as the consumers fall for it and for 4 decades there's been no overall lack of success in this ploy.

In audio, the complete works of The Beatles is analogous.
