The new trailer for James Wong's Dragonball Evolution has hit the Web, and you can watch it after the jump.

Based on the venerable Japanese manga/anime franchise Dragon Ball, the movie is the first official attempt by a U.S. studio to translate the franchise's characters—at least some of them—into a live-action movie.

It stars War of the Worlds' Justin Chatwin as Goku, a young man who discovers his destiny to protect Earth from the forces of evil, led by Lord Piccolo (Buffy the Vampire Slayer's James Marsters), by gathering the seven mystical dragon balls first. He is aided by a mentor, Master Roshi (Chow Yun-Fat), and Bulma (Phantom of the Opera star Rossum), from whose father a dragon ball has already been stolen. James Wong (the Final Destination series) directs. Dragonball Evolution opens April 8.

Agreed. Looks kinda like a big budget Power Rangers.

this movie will suck worse than double dragon and street fighter put together because other than a few names and a little of the mythology it will be nothing like the dragon ball series the writer who decided to change the story elements of the original should have his dragonball's removed and shoved somewhere uncomfortable for destroying another would be great movie franchise but hey that's just my opinion

I don't know, I think it could be pretty bad*ss. It's obviously not meant to mimick the characters exactly, so why would you assume it's meant to be exactly like the manga/series? As for the Power Rangers--have you ever even seen the show? I have. I saw the movie too. This is no Power Rangers. Just from the preview it can be seen that the movie is taking itself much more seriously. The dark tone is fascinating too. I would also point out that Dragonball as a series has always mixed kick*ss over the top fights with campy humor and some mysticism.

Now, that all said, I'm a huge Dragonball fan. I will wait to see how the movie does, but I am not blinded by expectations that it is supposed to BE the manga/series as presented. I'm hoping for a great story in the vein of serious story/campy humor with well choreographed fights. However, being a huge fan, I'll also be the first to admit if it's an over-glorified "Three Ninjas". :)

Honestly, the original plot should have been kept. I have very little faith in this moving doing well. I mean, had they gone for the Saiyajin Saga, that would have been well-worth it. But this? Ugh.
