Ron Perlman (above) is part of the movie's ensemble cast, which also includes Thomas, Devon Aoki and John Malkovich. The film, based on the pen-and-paper role-playing game of the same name, was directed by Simon Hunter and was released in Europe last year.

Here's how Magnet describes the movie: Mutant Chronicles is set in the year 2707 on an unrecognizable Earth where a war is raging between four giant corporations who control the planet as they battle over the planet's dwindling resources. This war is soon rendered irrelevant when an errant bomb shatters an ancient buried seal, releasing a horrific mutant army from its prison deep within the Earth. As the mutant scourge threatens human extinction, a squad of ragged soldiers, led by Mitch Hunter (Jane), descends into the Earth in a last-ditch effort to destroy the mutants and save mankind.

Sweet, can't wait to see this film. Hopefully it will be as good as it looks.

By darfnoogie at 8:35 AM ON 02/09/09

It was SOOOO not as good as it looked, a real disappointment!

By shroudedwolf at 12:49 PM ON 02/09/09

Sigh, again, don't listen to the haters. It is a great movie if you like this type of movie. Most people who hate it, do because of "logical" inconsistancies. Don't forget that this is a Mutant Zombie movie. It's a Scifi movie. Can we please move on from this idiotic "it's crap because how they acted didn't make sense". Seriously, did anyone like the Fifth Element? Total Recall? The Dark Knight? I could go on...and on....and on... I suggest that if you like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Skycaptain and the World of Tomorrow, Hellboy, mutant zombies, and/or steampunk, you see this movie. If you want to watch it just to see a movie because you have no taste, don't see it and please stop bashing something you can't understand.

By hebramleigh at 1:16 PM ON 02/09/09

So according to Shroudedwolf, if a movie is illogical with acting that makes no sense, you are a tasteless hater if you DON'T like it?
Wow.
Shrouded, it is not a personal attack on you if someone doesn't like a movie. It's just that some of us prefer movies that are logical and have rational acting. I'm not saying; I'm just saying.

By shroudedwolf at 1:59 PM ON 02/09/09

Hm. Let's see. If you say you don't like a movie that is illogical and you hate Mutant Chronnicles because it has illogical moments, then yes, you are hating on it.

It IS a personal attack because people who watch a movie like this and then compalin about logic are obviously deficient in some manner. Did you miss my entire point? You don't go watch a movie about mutant zombies for logic and realism. Those people I was referring to are the ones who walk into any movie without thinking about what it's going to be like. Hence, my examples of liking the Fifth Element or The Dark Knight, both of which are rich with illogical moments and questionable acting. These are, in general, the ONLY people I've seen on places like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB that are hating on the movie.

As far as acting, it's not Oscar worthy, but it's not horrible. I never said anything about acting that made no sense. There is some campy dialogue, but it works with the stylization of this movie and definitely works much better than in a movie like Dawn of the Dead. This is on top of the fact that for an independently produced movie, this is top of the line.

I'm not telling people that they have to love the movie or even like it, I'm pointing out, from my own observations about the criticisms I've seen, that people shouldn't go in looking for Million Dollar Baby acting or the realism/logic of a documentary.

Again, just in case you missed my point once more, don't pan this movie for illogical moments if you say you're a fan of scifi because that's just oxymoronic. If you prefer movies that are logical and have rational acting (which again, I find a lot of Mutant Chronnicles' acting just fine), then you don't have to watch it. My entire point was not to go see it and then bust on it because you were stupid enough not to figure out that it's a mutant zombie movie. "I'm not saying; I'm just saying."

By shroudedwolf at 2:02 PM ON 02/09/09

Edit: Reading back over my posts, I see that I mentioned "how they acted didn't make sense". I wanted to clarify that the acting was not what I was calling into question, but rather why a character did was not what they should have done, thus illogical.

By hebramleigh at 2:57 PM ON 02/09/09

Calm down, Shrouded. I haven't seen the movie so I don't know if it is good or bad. I'm a Ron Perlman fan so I'll probably watch it regardless. My post was to illustrate that too many people get angry and make personal attacks on others who simply have a difference of opinion. If someone doesn't like the movie, it does not mean they have bad taste. It doesn't make them a "hater." It simply means that they don't like the movie.
Also, sci-fi doesn't mean illogical plots and unrealistic acting. The first 2 Aliens movies, 2001, many elements of Stargate (the movie and series), and even the Battlestar Galactica series have technology firmly grounded in science reality. The acting and plots are top-rate.

I for one really liked the mutant cronicles
, it was quite a bit diffrent from the games but still a fun movie

By shroudedwolf at 6:21 PM ON 02/09/09

I'm sorry, you seem to have missed everything I've said. Technically, bashing a movie makes you a "hater" by default, though let's not nitpick that. As I said before, my problem is with people who don't like scifi and watch a scifi movie anyway and then go everywhere bashing it. It's the same phenomena of the people who somehow think they're saying something intelligent after watching Resident Evil 3 and saying, "It sucks because it's not like the game!" Duh. Did you not get that after the first two?

I also tried to make it clear in my last post that I don't care if you don't like it, that's fine, but choose something other than implausibility in the movie. Everything you mentioned does have plenty that is grounded in reality. After all, the audience needs to identify. However, everything you mentioned also has parts where you think, "Why didn't they do that instead? It would have been easier and it doesn't work with something they did in the past." (I'm a huge Stargate fan.) Regardless, they still have things like intergalactic travel that is plausible, but not real yet. The people I see "hating" on the film are people who say things like, "That ship is too heavy to fly by steam alone!" or, "That guy was burned by a laser over half of his body, yet he got up and fought like he was fully rested!" There are plenty of examples of those as well in Alien and Aliens, Stargate, and whatnot. For heaven's sake, westerns have guys being shot through windows by hand guns--which is not possible (watch Mythbusters, lol).

Being a Perlman fan, I'm sure you have watched the Hellboy movies. There are "haters" of those as well, trying to say it's bad because things "just don't work that way" in fights, etc. (Perlman as the priest in this is worth watching alone, btw. :) )

If you haven't seen the movie, then my post wasn't really for you anyway. My frustration is about the people I've already given plenty of examples about. Scifi and fantasy are all about the suspension of disbelief to begin with so trying to apply real world rules to them are just futile.

Again, people are free to hate the movie for various other reasons, but with all the logic defying moments through all scifi, fantasy, and really any other genre, it's hypocritical to "hate" on Mutant Chronnicles if you like other scifi and fantasy stories.

@jimthegray: Yeah, I've never even heard of the RPG before I saw the movie, but reading up on the movie, I found it was never meant to be much similar to it.

Not having seen the movie hebram, my posts may sound like there are things wrong that there are not. The plot is cohesive, well-paced, fun, the acting is decent--if not good for some of the campy dialogue, and the stylization/FX are amazing for an independently produced movie. My first post compares the movie to severeal others that are similar.

I only ask that people who don't tend to watch stuff like the movies I originally mentioned not go to the movie then start bashing it because it wasn't the style of movie they like. That was my point in posting to begin with.

Mutant Chronicles was a fun watch even with its jumpy scenes or other inherent problems. I'd say it was better than most of the creature features on Sci-Fi channel. As 'shroudedwolf' says, the FX / Stylization is quite good for this independent film (was this a Euro or just plain UK production?). Of course, it could have been a better movie with more financial backing or more time as it seemed to skip over some scenes pretty quickly. Pacing was very European and kind of reminded me of Casshern abit too. Not bad for a pen-n-paper game to film adaptation. Better than Uwe Boll's Dungeon Siege movie and that was tolerable movie due to Jason Statham.

I would give Mutant Chronicles a 6/10 and recommend this as a watch on Sci-Fi channel (if they pick it up) or video release. I'd like to watch it on HD as it was shot that way.

This movie is a classic throwback! I've been eagerly awaiting the premiere ever since seeing the movie at SDCC, because I have not see such a perfect schlockfest in the last decade.

Every frame of this movie is a blatant labor of love. They really don't make 'em like this any more, and based on the online reaction I've always seen to this movie, they won't ever make 'em like this again. Oh well, those of us that get it, will.

The matte backgrounds alone! Sigh

I watched this film last year several crossover actors from Golden army. I to be honest dis not like it the story had inconsistencies & the acting was lackluster a straight to DVD& download film not a cinema film. I have 3 catagories of film 1, Watch & keep to watch again & again. 2, Watch a couple of times then bin & 3 watch once. I am sorry to say this film was a CAT 3 not great, watchable but not a keeper.
