William Shatner wants to beam into the Canadian prime minister\'s job

Is the Great White North ready for Captain Kirk to take it into the future?

Montreal-born William Shatner says he wants to be prime minister of Canada, the New Zealand newspaper Web site Stuff.co.nz reported.

The 77-year-old Star Trek actor revealed his ambition in response to a letter from a fan who urged him to put himself forward for governor general of Canada.

"My intention is to be prime minister of Canada, not governor general, which is mainly a ceremonial position," he reportedly wrote.

Shatner added: "I must, with my deepest thanks, turn down your honourable intent to advance me as Governor General. Besides which, I don't have time to be Governor General. ... As Prime Minister I can lead Canada into even greater exploits."

If he makes it, I'm moving to Canada. Who wouldn't want to live in a country ruled by William Shatner? That would be awesome!

KansasBard, right after I saw this story, I requested the necessary paperwork to become a citizen of Canada...just in case he wins.

Honestly, the best of luck to him. Great guy.

THank you Sci Fi Wire I was having a bad day. this turned it around. I think it would be a great Idea. I might even move to canada. As PM Shatner could close the border to bad Star Trek movies. Maybe even get the dr.'s up there to find cure for madcow. I Bet he could even get them to stop putting mayo on every sandwich. On the other hand it's too bad he couldn't run for Pres. It would be Real easy to redecorate the oval office to look like the bridge. The room already semi round.

I love Trek as much as anybody, including Jim Kirk. But this is yet another sign of what a joke elected offices have become. Once upon a time (before career politicians became an admired career path), you had to earn the respect of the people before you could lead them. Now, all you have to do is play pretend and, if your box office sales are sufficient, you have effectively bought your votes. Public office is not a movie set. At least get a law degree or something before you run....
