ABC cancels Life on Mars, but will let it wrap up its season

ABC cancels \<i\>Life on Mars\<\/i\>, but will let it wrap up its season

ABC is canceling its time-travel cop series Life on Mars after a single year—but in an unusual move, the network will keep the show on the air through the end of its full run, Variety reported.

That will give the series a rare opportunity to sign off with a proper finale, wrapping up the series' core mystery: Why 21st-century New York cop Sam Tyler (Jason O'Mara) found himself transported back to the 1970s.

Network insiders told the trade paper that they were fans of the show and pleased with its creative chops—but that the ratings ultimately didn't warrant a second season. The most recent episode of Life on Mars averaged just a 2.0 rating/5 share among adults 18-49, as well as 5.5 million viewers.

Five more episodes remain out of the series' 17-episode order. As previously announced, the show's Wednesday 10 p.m. slot will go to the new series The Unusuals in April.

The BBC series of the same name, on which the ABC show is based, ran for two short seasons by design.

I'll miss Life On Mars. :-(

(just a personal opinion) I am glad that this happened.....why americans have to take a show that was done in Britain and then make a "better" american version of it is just silly. Besides this show ended a whiile ago and BBC is airing the sequel to this series Ashes to Ashes this week.

By mknopp31 at 8:13 AM ON 03/03/09

Why doesn't American television take a cue from BBC and Japanaese television? Some of these concepts just can't run long term. Craft some shows that, by design run for 1 season and tell a complete story. If it is a quality show, DVD sales should make up for any losses in syndication.

While I loved the BBC version of the program, I had a hard time understanding some of the accents. Of course, sometimes I have the same trouble with New Yorkers, LOL.

By blue at 12:13 PM ON 03/03/09

I enjoyed the BBC version and watched the first few eps of this one...it was interesting but just never kept me coming back.

I enjoyed the British version immensely and I enjoy the American version nearly as much, so I'm sad to see it go. Having said that, if LOM has to go at least it'll get a proper and satisfying ending. It would go a long way towards appeasing fans of cancelled series if they were given enough notice to film a real conclusion before the end.

By VJASEditor at 12:33 PM ON 03/03/09

I'll give credit to ABC, for having the insight to allow the series to wrap up. It would be a shame if they had just cancelled the series outright.

The American LOM, was a good attempt (especially after the dismal original pilot set in LA) The characters are great, and while reminsent of the British Cast, there was a bit of heart that just seemed to be as lost as Sam is.

A few more episode to look forward to, with hopefully as interesting an end as the original series, then time to get caught up on A2A, which i'll hold off on til then.

I'm sorry to see this news. My wife and I both enjoyed the British Life on Mars, and were just feeling that the American version was beginning to establish itself as something more than a remake. We'll watch the remaining episodes, but I'm sorry there won't be more.

By tgwaste at 12:44 PM ON 03/03/09

i knew this would fail. this show is like Lost on steriods.. they never answer ANY questions EVER. it doesnt go anywhere. maybe if they would had thrown us a bone every once in a while it wouldnt have been so boring.

The BBC version of this was MUCH higher quality. The American version was so poorly done they felt the need to make all the seventies scenes grainy. And the writing is poor and badly researched. For example in the pilot when the hero asks 'Where's my Jeep?' someone replies with 'You're looking for a military vehicle?' Some twenty-something-year-old writer didn't think to find out if there were non-military Jeeps in the seventies so a scene in the seventies is blown to bits by someone IN the seventies not knowing what was around in the seventies!

The American version talked down to the audience. I sincerely hope they don't try an American version of Being Human. They'd ruin it.

By Pete at 4:26 PM ON 03/03/09

Mandy, in 1973 even though civilian versions of the Jeep had been sold for almost 30 years, there really weren't that many around. More importantly, the cultural image of "Jeep" was still very much of a military vehicle at that time. So it wasn't that there weren't any non-military Jeeps at that time, but that they were still mainly regarded as military vehicles. You really shouldn't start complaining about things you obviously know little or nothing about.

On the other hand, if you stopped you would have nothing to say.

I just couldn't stomach Harvey Keitel as Gene Hunt. Phillip Glenister was so much stronger, much more of a lovable JERK, he really made the BBC show for me! Otherwise, if you've seen both series, it was basically (for the first few episodes) a word for word remake, which wasn't even necessary. Honestly, if this were the ONLY Life On Mars, I would have tuned out by episode 3. That was ABC's mistake... for the most part, the only people still watching are fans of the original. So, I have to agree here with the many many people who say, AMERICANS, STOP TRYING TO RECREATE BBC SHOWS, it RARELY works! Ok, I'm off to go watch Sanford and Son on Nick at Night ;)

By Mandy at 10:39 PM ON 03/03/09

Pete, do not throw personal attacks if you disagree with someone. The fact is someone who was meant to be a police officer in NEW YORK CITY in 1973 would have known about civilian Jeeps. Civilian Jeeps had been around since the sixties and a major city police officer would not have been that oblivious about it. So don't try to justify this rubbish to me.

By Pete at 12:14 PM ON 03/05/09

Mandy, first off, the Jeep CJ has been around since 1944, not the sixties. More proof you really don't know what you're talking about. Secondly, I guess you didn't understand that the cultural image of the Jeep was still as I said very much that of a military vehicle. Nobody ever said a police officer in New York City in 1973 was unaware of civilian Jeeps. What was said, and I've experienced this firsthand in the year in question, is that Jeep was still very much considered a military vehicle, which it was. I had a cousin who bought a CJ in 1968 and while he bought it retail, everyone and I mean EVERYONE asked him how he bought one from the Army. You see, were you around and aware back in 1973 you'd understand that the question about a Jeep being military was not only common, but almost ubiquitous.

There is a huge difference between knowing what you're talking about and TRYING TO SOUND like you know what you're talking about. Anyone who's old enough to have been an adult in 1973 knows you fall into the latter category.

P.S. - You missed a chance to beat the dead horse that is Dresden.

By I was there too at 12:23 AM ON 03/08/09

Pete, I was around in the '60s and '70s, too. You're trying to make your individual experience fit the whole world. Others would not have thought of the jeep as a military vehicle. So the policeman's comment could have been viewed either way. Even if it couldn't, there is no reason to treat Mandy like a nasty bugger. You could have just educated, without the vitriol. Have you two got a history? Grow up and get over it. (By the way, wasn't it Ray who made the comment? This is the same anti-hippies, women-in-the-kitchen guy who has hair nearly as long as his wife's and facial hair. So you have to take him with a grain of salt anyway.) By the way, I watched the original series on BBC America years back. Each had its strengths, but I thought the American version was pretty good, especially some of the deviations. I don't think the British Gene had a daughter in the show, at least not one old enough that Sam would have, and certainly not one he should have, had sex with. That Gene wasn't as old. This type of show just does not seem to attract ratings here: Daybreak, Journeyman ...

Geez! Who gives a F about the Jeep? I tried very hard from the start to pick this show apart & found a few (just a few) things that might be inconsistent. But, this show was & still is 99% right on! The only better art direction was Pushing Daisies & it got yanked at the top of its form with only questions to be asked. OK, British or American? Apples & oranges, both equally as sweet. Too bad that the British series is not available, too sad that the American series will be gone in a week. Shame on you, those that argued. Enjoy that which has been bestowed upon you... or just find something else to complain about.

Sorry about the multiple entries. Posting this was not without its pitfalls. Yes, Journeyman & Dresden.. RIP, Pushing Daisies as well. Smith & My Own Worst Enemy. My theory, if it's good, it's gone....

Once again, Network TV tucks its tail and does not allow an intriguing and creative TV Show enough time to develop an audience!! Shame on you ABC!!

I really like this show, I'm sorry to see it go. ABC is pulling the plug too soon but at least they are finishing off the season.
