Edward James Olmos told SCI FI Wire that he hopes the upcoming Battlestar Galactica spinoff movie The Plan—a Cylon-centric story that he directed and stars in as William Adama—will inspire newcomers to check out the 2003 miniseries and the subsequent four years of the SCI FI Channel original series.
"The Plan is ... literally, at the beginning of every single episode [of Battlestar Galactica], you see that 'The Cylons are created by man, there are many of them, and some of them don't know that they are Cylons. And they have a plan,'" Olmos said in an interview last week in New York. "Well, this is the plan. This is what caused this to happen."
Olmos directed several episodes of Battlestar Galactica during its run, but he described calling the shots on The Plan—which will likely come out on DVD and will also air this fall—as a unique challenge. The Plan recaps the story of the destruction of the human Colonies from the point of view of the Cylons.
"It's a different formula, a different understanding in the way that the story is told," Olmos said. "It's a very, very strong piece, and I hope that people who don't know the show at all can see this and be exposed to situations, and ... learn what they mean when they go through the show. And that will completely throw them into understanding the Cylon world. So when you go back and see the episodes, if you've never seen the show before, it'll drive you to see the miniseries and episodes and to follow through [from the miniseries] through to the 78 or 79 hours [of the series]."
The two-hour series finale of Battlestar Galactica, "Daybreak, Part 2," will premiere on SCI FI today at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

I'm actually looking forward to this movie. While it's obvious Ron Moore and Company through "the Plan" together after the fact, it will be interesting to see how they tie it together. The only bad thing will be if all the Cylons aren't involved. Based on the IMDb entry for Lucy Lawless, she's not part of this movie, which will kind of suck since Number Three was a fun character that became pivotal to the whole mythology.

This is the first I heard of this...it sounds frakkin awesome...I also hope they are able to incorporate this into the mythology in a seamless manner. From what Olmos described it sounds like a great fit in the BSG story...Can't wait....

This movie will make the mythology complete. The other BSG movie, Razor, was just a reenactment of the Battlestar Pegasus' experiences after the Cylon attacks. The events that took place were discussed during the show by the characters. I imagine The Plan will be a similar exercise.

This sounds cool, but I hope it will be the last interpretation of that "first" attack-- we don't need any more. What I REALLY hope to see is the ORIGINAL Cylon attack 40 years prior, and if they don't depict it by the end of the new series "Caprica", well then that would just be lame.

I can't wait. Except for the awful "Islanded in a Stream of Stars" (which was probably so bad mostly due to the writing and editing down), Olmos has done brilliant work on BSG. I hope he works on Caprica, too. A real wonderfully supportive guy for the show, too.

I love the show, but I wish they had incorporated The Plan backstory into the last few episodes, which have been coasting with filler material. This would have made the buildup to the finale a lot more interesting, imo.

Bryan Fuller SHOULD watch BSG and take notes if he wants to do his own take on "Trek" for television. The new BSG re-invented the franchise, "Trek XI" the film is doing the same thing. "Trek" can learn a LOT from the new BSG!!!

this was a great ending..I feel sad. I hope the caprica will fullfill this void. Hmm is The Plan going to be that different then from the new series Caprica?

I think it would be like the Razor. It wasn`t that bad i would had preferred that the movie would tide the loose ends that left me. About starbuck history who is her father or who or what is she, the twist i read that i like it, if her father was a cyclone and so she was a hybrid like hera !!

Let me propose a school of thought that may have been presented earlier. There are true "Skinjobs"(as portrayed in the visions of the President Mary McDonnell) and there are Cylons, like the skinjobs in the series. The Resurection Hub would be required to regenerate a typical Cylon, but a "Chosen" Starbuck may not need any technology at all to be re-born. An Angel among us? Who can say.
