Burger King beams onto the Enterprise set for TV ads

Burger King beams onto the \<i\>Enterprise\<\/i\> set for TV ads

Have we seen this before?

Burger King, one of the marketing partners on J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek movie, will shoot its Trek-themed TV commercials on the actual set of the starship Enterprise from the movie, Fishbowl LA reported.

Not only that, but the commercials will use the film's cinematographer (Daniel Mindel) and production designer (Scott Chambliss), the site reported.

Burger King beams onto the \<i\>Enterprise\<\/i\> set for TV ads

So ... a Burger King bag on Sulu's console? A Coke at Mr. Spock's science station? (Or does he seem more like a chocolate-shake kind of guy?) A Whopper on the arm of Kirk's chair?

*shudder*

Star Trek opens May 8.

If a Burger King logo shows up anywhere in the movie itself, I swear I will get up and walk out.

By mdx311 at 3:14 PM ON 03/11/09

never has star trek had to stoop to this kind of branding. my hopes and expectations are very, very low.

By Cynic at 3:20 PM ON 03/11/09

Never has Star Trek been ABLE to stoop this low. This is a great sign that someone has confidence in it.

By Shakespeare Prof at 3:31 PM ON 03/11/09

Does anyone else out there remember the McDonald's Happy Meal tie-in with "Star Trek: The MotionPicture"? I had the tricorder which came with a mini-comic book that you could scroll through! In other words, this isn't anything new. "Star Trek" first had a fast-food promotional campaign 30 years ago.

By biodredd at 3:40 PM ON 03/11/09

So in other words... fast food tie-ins which have occured in virtually every other sci-fi tentpole film for the last 30 years should stop with this one because its Star Trek? Hmm.. Trek has had fast food tie-ins with Taco Bell, McDonalds and so in in its history. Other then not liking it, can you give a real reason as to why they shouldn't be tieing into this?

Promotional tieins give additional exposure to the film through visits to the restaurants in questions which ultimately drive more people into the theater. If it wasn't the case, no one would engage in this type of promotion any more.

THANK YOU J.J. ABRAHMS FOR SCREWING UP SOMETHING YOU DIDN'T CARE ABOUT IN THE BEGINING.WHAT THE H E L L ,YOU WERN'T A FAN SO WHO CARES HOW BAD YOU MESS THINGS UP RIGHT?AND PARAMOUNT ...YOUV'E GOT GENE AND MAJ ROLLING OVER IN THEIR GRAVES.

I myself have two Star Trek III:The Search for Spock Taco Bell Glass cups. Its a long tradition. I like the idea!!!!

By Scott at 4:22 PM ON 03/11/09

All you people who complain and whine about this movie.

You are all going to see it. Probably opening weekend. And will be raving about how good it is.

I am perfectly fine with someone taking Star Trek and giving it the BSG treatment. Way, way better than another in a stream of increasingly tired movies.

The BEST thing they ever did with Star Trek is to take it out of the hands of the people who were handling it into oblivion.

By Jayhawks at 4:55 PM ON 03/11/09

Kirk: MY...GODTHISBURGER...IT... IS...SODARNGOOD! Spock: I find these sesame seed buns...fascinating. Bones: Damint Jim, I'm a doctor not a dietician!

By Magicmind at 5:30 PM ON 03/11/09

Oh good lord people, why dont you read it...theres not going to be any BK items in the movie. BK is using the set to make commercials. whats the big deal? I have star wars glasses from bk...I hope they ,make glasses for this movie as well. Its all part and parcel...All part of the fun! get over yourselves.

By Rob Wampum at 5:53 PM ON 03/11/09

Hey...all you nerds should know that Star Trek IV & V was also an avenue of product placement!
From the link http://io9.com/5061426/the-history-of-product-placement-in-science-fiction - "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home took advantage of its present-day setting to pimp Michelob beer — the official beer of the Federation — and of course, Scotty gets to know an Apple Macintosh better. The Trek franchise liked that product-placement money so much, Kirk and his crew go camping in Levis jeans in Star Trek V."

By Captain Zacary R Wildstar SSD Dexterous at 5:53 PM ON 03/11/09

biodredd , green_giant . are all right each of these movies had fast food promos. I remember ST:V The final frontier #5 has life size cutouts of Kirk & Spock holding the Vhs boxes. (I got one from the vid store and sold it for $500 at a Trek con)
So it's a sound Idea Of course al these films were Odd numbered and by most fans considered Not the greatest. Then again if this is a reboot film that would make it #1 which is an odd number so thank you for pointing out that this film is not going to be good. (See even in you heart of hearts you know it.) Would you like to cross examine?

By spacetrucker at 5:57 PM ON 03/11/09

I have Star Trek III glasses from Taco Bell in my collection. U guys need to quit stressing. there is no capitalism on Star Treks earth in the 23rd century, hence no product placement.

By bolt at 6:19 PM ON 03/11/09

I'm glad there making money, and that they have confidance in the movie, just look at the budjet, nemisis was around 40 million...this is150 million! I hope this brings Genes message of a Hopefull Future to the world.. Less armageddon..to many more people..

By jbs780 at 7:08 PM ON 03/11/09

"YOUV'E GOT GENE AND MAJ ROLLING OVER IN THEIR GRAVES."

Majel Barrett is dead? When did that happen. I think some of you boys need to take a DEEEEEEEP BREATH. This is just part of movie making in the modern world. This bid-nit deal in no way compromises the movie.

Amazing the way some folks are just bound and determined to not like this flick...which they have NOT seen yet, and are finding all sorts of things to gripe about.

I mean GEEZ PEOPLE! Give it a rest already! Go see the movie...then if you REALLY don't like it...gripe away...but let's SEE it first!

EXTRA NOTE ON 2nd POSTING ATTEMPT: YO! SCIFI WIRE! FIX THE FURSHLURGENER CAPTCHA DOOHICKE! 100% of the time I have to post twice...putting the code in corect the ist time 100% of the time and always have to redo. VERY ANNOYING!

By jbs780 at 7:12 PM ON 03/11/09

And while your at it...and edit feature would be nice so we can fix typos. Please. Thanks.

By Mr Fusion at 9:16 PM ON 03/11/09

Captain Jack, you make me laugh with your cute sci-fi cussing and how you get all offended that someone might eat a burger on the bridge for a commercial that's not in or part of the movie.

Do you cry yourself to sleep at night because you're so "frakking" lonely?

By kufitop at 10:27 PM ON 03/11/09

Geez. It makes me sad that all you fans (as in it's true derivation from "fanatic") can't just relax. I've personally worked with Walter K., Nichelle N., Tim Russ, Gary Graham and many of the various series cast members. I've sat down and had meals with these folks as well as Rod Roddenberry. They all may have specific hopes or concerns, but share the desire that future incarnations of ST be well produced quality scripts that honor Gene's original vision. I really doubt that Paramount/J.J. Abrams are looking to take a major dump on all the goodwill and built-in fanbase out there. These folks (especially the studio) are looking to provide solid entertainment that will put butts in seats. And of course potentially franchise beyond that and make yet more money. Would they really stray so far? I don't think so. Commercial cooperation is a sign of serious corporate faith that there is good money to be made without chasing away present and future customers. LLAP.

By unicron26 at 10:59 PM ON 03/11/09

To be honest i hope this movie fails because then we can demand that CBS and Paramount give it back to the people who help start it sure there dead but there son is still alive if CBS needs shows for CW(CBS II) they should take the star trek titan books and make that into a series hey its a new ship new crew but you will have familar names with a few new characters.

By Cheeseburger at 1:51 AM ON 03/12/09

Scotty! Yes Captain? You want me to beam you down the surface? Do you want to fix the phasers? Do you want me to overload the warp engines? Do you want me to increase power to the shields? No, Scotty, I just want you to get me a double cheeseburger and fries!

By IsoTek at 6:31 AM ON 03/12/09

All you peeps upset over Burger King getting advertspace with Trek need to quit your bitching. Without sponsors some of these movies wouldn't get made at all and like others have pointed out, this is not the first film let alone "Trek" film to have corporate sponsorship.

By TauCetiPrime at 8:22 AM ON 03/12/09

So the prodiucers of Star Trek are going commercial in their promotion of the film.. BIG DEAL! Have you crybabies been living under a rock on Deneb 5?
GET OVER IT !

voiced by the original actors but with look alike actors back in the 90's.

By Mr Fusion at 11:26 AM ON 03/12/09

Captain Jack, I never said I didn't like your cute sci-fi cussing, I just said it makes me laugh.

You're so adamant about making the point that a Whopper and fries on the bridge offends you (which in and of itself is laughable) that you get yourself worked up into a frenzy where you use fake cuss words instead of rationally explaining why your opinion differs. That makes you next to impossible to take seriously, and as a result you come off as a massive fanboy who's biggest concern is a 30 second TV spot about fast food.

If you spent less time at your computer asking strangers on the internet to blow you and got out more, you'd probably laugh at your rants too.

By TommyHawk at 2:50 PM ON 03/12/09

unicron26 is NOT worthy of the name "fan." They want the franchise to fail. Go away troll.

It's funny to see how little some of the bashers know.. and I mean VERY little, probably little about anything. Morons.

By jbs780 at 6:46 PM ON 03/12/09

Captain Jack Harkness...Who exactly appoointed you GREAT GUARDIAN OF THE GALAXY anyway....just GET OVER YOURSELF!

Rob...this movie IS STAR TREK. You don't have to like that, but that is the cold hard reality. Deal with it...and stop carrying on like someone gave you a black robe and a gavel and appointed you the judge of who is, or is not a STAR TREK fan.

I swear! Some people's children!

unicron26...If this movie fails...STAR TREK is DEAD...at least as far as any new films or shows being produced is concerned...No one would invest anymore time and more to the point, more money in what would then be percieved as a dead franchise. Just sayin' so don't be hatin'.

Yep, there goes the CAPTCHA snafu...again...right on time!

By V at 12:53 PM ON 03/13/09

This is down right hilarious!

Rob and Captain Jack - you guys take the cake for being the most Uber Trek fraks I've ever known. Your rant about Trek becoming "commercial" under Abrams watch been proven wrong, yet you continue to post the most bile-spewing hate I've read in quite some time.

YOU have been proven wrong about the BK commercials, just as you are probably wrong about the new Trek movie. WAY TO MAKE YOURSELVES AND YOUR CAUSE COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT! LOL!

Long Live Star Trek!

By Denise at 6:43 PM ON 03/13/09

At least Kellogg's has the sense to put the real USS Enterprise NCC-1701 on the front of the new Star Trek cereal. (Yes, that would be the Enterprise from the Star Trek TV series.)

By ILOVEChrisPine at 6:48 PM ON 03/13/09

If BK comes out with Trek kids meal toys, I will be the first to get one. Bring 'em on!

If I can drink a milkshake and play with a spock action figure, I'm a happy camper.

By Denise at 7:23 PM ON 03/13/09

Where are people getting this about traditionalist fans being haters? Most of the hate I've seen on these boards seems to be coming from those defending Abrams' folly.

By Mike at 10:33 AM ON 03/16/09

@Denise: That's because Sci-Fi finally started doing what should have since these boards were created. They moderated the most spiteful comments.

Trust me, I was observing this crap... it was pretty childish, petty, and overall bad. On both sides.

By frelling_cute at 5:33 PM ON 04/07/09

I wonder if these are glass glasses or plastic glasses. I remember Burger and and McDonalds came out with some Batman and Flinstones glasses that were glass and they are still around all these years later in my cabinet. Lets hope they dont go cheap.
