Paradox Entertainment has acquired screen rights to Chariots of the Gods?, Erich von Daniken's 1968 best-selling nonfiction book, which pressed the case that Earth has been visited by aliens, Variety reported.

The premise will be turned into a science fiction film that will be produced by Paradox's Fredrik Malmberg and Amber Entertainment's Mark Ordesky.

The book explores the evidence that different civilizations were visited by extraterrestrials. The book has sold 68 million copies worldwide and has been published in 32 languages. It also spawned a 1974 documentary.

Yeah, right... "nonfiction".

I'd go see it. I read COTG when it first came out and it inspired me to travel the world to actually see some of the things described. Even the biggest skeptics can't say for sure if he is wrong.

I can say for sure he was wrong. Remember when he wrote that ancient man couldn't know what the human skeleton looked like without X-rays? He was wrong. The Nazca lines were runways for UFOs? Wrong. There was no evidence of the development of the pyramids by human hands? Wrong. I could go on. They guy's books were terrible and full of errors and downright hoaxes.

Rember a little movie and and BIG SHOW called StarGate

By Pennarin at 8:22 AM ON 03/11/09

ethan97, stargate posited in the movie that one pyramid on Earth and Abydos were made by humans for the alien's starship to land on...and thus other pyramids were symbolic copies.
Archeologists, historians, basically people from any other related field can see where stargate diverges from known facts for the prupose of making entertaining television.
I.e. it's a show.

How are they going to even make a film out of this!?!? Is this going to be a DiVinci Code Treatment? Who is going to play Prof. Von Daniken?

Seriously this is scraping.

The History Channel had a two hour special on this, and excellent special at that, subject matter featuring at great length Mr. Von Danikens work and the author himself.

I may be showing my age here, but the original Battlestar Galactica mythology seemed to be based on CoTG as well.

COTG and its 'sequels' were spurious nonsense. However, could potentially be a very entertaining piece of hokum. Perhaps Roland Emmerich should direct it....ooops, he's had one go already!

By Jimspar at 5:20 PM ON 03/11/09

This is wrong, that is wrong, who gives a frak. The Bible is published as non-fiction, as is Dianetics, and they are both unproven pieces of literature, so should they be classified as fiction?

By kufitop at 9:59 PM ON 03/11/09

Geez, people. At least it's not a remake. The original Von Daniken material thrilled my imagination as a youngster, much like (the Nimoy narrated) In Search Of series. It could easily be morphed into some engaging entertainment. Not science fact ... entertainment.

Someone should do a remake of 1975's "Search for the Gods" which had a young Kurt Russell in it, involving a quest for an alien medallion from 55,000 years ago. A bigger budget and more advanced special effects would be good. // And how can you make a movie out of a faux documentary, especially since the source material has been laughed out of existence?

By Ian at 2:55 PM ON 03/12/09

Non fiction? It was pure fiction.

By ymarsha at 11:11 PM ON 03/13/09

I read that book about 35 years ago. It was great and made me think. I would definitely go see the movie.

By Leroy Morte at 1:05 AM ON 03/23/09

LOL, if you just watched the last 4 seasons of Battlestar Galactica, apparently, according to the series finale, you've already seen this movie. Also if you've seen anything Emmerich has ever done. I'd skip it.
