Christian Bale out, Sam Worthington in as Batman?

Christian Bale out, Sam Worthington in as Batman?

The Australian newspaper The Herald Sun reported today that Sam Worthington, who'll be appearing on screen in two high-profile sci-fi flicks this year—Terminator Salvation in May and Avatar in December—may replace Christian Bale in a third Dark Knight flick.

The paper states that "industry gossip" has the Australian actor "tipped" as the next Batman. However, it's important to note that since a third film hasn't even been discussed yet, it's premature for any casting decisions to be made.

come on, this is BS. why run this?

By Jen at 10:06 PM ON 03/09/09

Give me a break. Bale has been signed for three films since before Batman Begins. This story is a load of B.S.

By kenny at 10:18 PM ON 03/09/09

yeah its total crap for batman 3 but i think sam worthington could replace bale if needed...maybe

By Ryan at 10:18 PM ON 03/09/09

BS. They'd never recast Bale. Slow news day?

By digitalworlds at 10:35 PM ON 03/09/09

Yeah, I agree. This newspaper is probably equivalent to "The Sun" in England -- just a scandal rag!

Why even post information like this!

By squirrel at 11:02 PM ON 03/09/09

Why does scifi got to post stuff like this that can't be true... Leave the rumors to the other websites cause stuff like this being post on scifi is only hurting their reputation.

By TREE at 11:03 PM ON 03/09/09

Yeah total BS. The third movie is going to be bigger and better. I hope the rumors are true and they use the Riddler for this one. There's no possible way they would mess up a good thing and replace Michael Keaton with anyone else.

By Justo at 11:32 PM ON 03/09/09

yeah, i agree with everyone here, this is too far from likely to be news worthy. Maybe scifiwire should have a small subsection to post these kind of rumors. They're interesting, but not worth an entire news post for each one. The old scifi wire had that little sidebar thingy that posted small stories like this. Get that back.

By rick rocketpop at 12:21 AM ON 03/10/09

once again, obviously, new site sucks. I am going to stop coming here very soon

By kenn at 1:57 AM ON 03/10/09

I have to agree, since the integration of Wire and Weekly, it;s gotten pretty bad.

Can we get Weekly back and you guys can keep Wire? 8D

By biodredd at 2:12 AM ON 03/10/09

I love how in one sentence from the talkbackers, people say this is a load of BS because a third movie isn't announced and then in the next breath talking about how great it would be if the rumors about using the Riddler are true.

Let me be painfully clear about this... any talk of casting or re-casting is nothing more then a rumor at this point. Nolan and the studio are in discussions but nothing has been agreed upon or signed. Until that happens there is no script. With no script in existence at this point, any rumor of possible villian or villians to appear is just that... a rumor with no basis in reality what-so-ever.

If people are going to give hell to scifiwire for running a story that appears in the RUMOR category, I wouln't be so quick to turn around and then post your own little rumor in the same talkback.

By Shelverman at 2:16 AM ON 03/10/09

re: "I love how in one sentence from the talkbackers, people say this is a load of BS because a third movie isn't announced and then in the next breath talking about how great it would be if the rumors about using the Riddler are true."

The guy/girl who mentioned the Riddler was making a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Michael Keaton-Val Kilmer casting change that occurred between Batman Returns and Batman Forever.

I've wanted Sam Worthington to play a super hero for some time now. I saw him in the movie Somersault about 2 years ago...and knew instantly that this guy was the next big thing, trust me--he can act...and when I say act, I mean it!!! James Cameron picked him for Avatar for a reason...and when you see T4, you will know...there is no contest, Sam can out act, and out emote, Christian Bale in any scene, on any stage, or set, any day. The difference between the two??? You can tell that Christian is acting, although he is an excellent technician. Sam, however, fades into a role, and you feel that you are eavesdropping on him, as if, he is locked into a real conversation. He embeds himself in his characters...giving you the sense that you are witnessing a real human's life unfolding, not a scripted...and acted role of someone who does not exist. Sam is truly special, much like Chiwetel Ejiofor (Serenity), he is a scene stealer!!! Man, would I love to see them square-off in a film!!!

By Hellking at 2:24 AM ON 03/10/09

WTF? Thanks, gossip girls, I guess. If this is what we're getting from Sci-Fi, it's no wonder that the programming has gone to sh*t. What, is it a bunch of friggin' junior high girls running the whole thing now?
Go dry out your panties, little girls. Leave the programming - for the network and the website - to someone who knows what they're doing while you go and read your "Tiger Beat" tweets while masturbating to "Twilight."

By Sylver at 6:06 AM ON 03/10/09

Sci-Fi news is going down the pan, we've all noticed this kind of cheap, attention grabbing bs slowly building up over the last few months. I too won't be coming here much longer if this carries on. Lets face it once Battlestar ends the Sci-Fi channel is pretty much over anyway...

By Donald Blake at 7:47 AM ON 03/10/09

Bull! Next your gonna say that Adam West will play Batman. Bale is Batman, just like Keaton was, Clooney, Kilmer Sucked!!!

By TauCetiPrime at 7:52 AM ON 03/10/09

You're "Crying Wolf, here, folks... Firing for effect. Wait until it is confirmed before you spread rumors. It's hard to get a 'pulse' on the industry, when you keep shocking the patient...

By stargazer_1682 at 11:10 AM ON 03/10/09

Man, this article got my hopes up! I really can't stand Christian Bale.

By Jpnoir at 1:06 PM ON 03/10/09

yeah its BS. But it will be a huge task to follow up the Dark Knight. Nolan may want to hang the cape and leave Batman at top of its game. no matter if 3rd flick would be good or great, it will be a downhill slope since dark knight was the peak. no matter, i will see anything by Nolan. He's the man.

By FCPT Unicorn at 6:01 PM ON 03/10/09

100% BS!!! If you want REAL Batman news go to www.batman-on-film.com. They have been doing Batnews for over 10 years, with some of it coming from the WB themselves and C Nolan.

By PeterVA at 6:38 PM ON 03/10/09

It's this kind of sensationalist journalism that really pisses me off about this site. I remember the days when SciFi Wire was a good source of actual information, not the gossip rag that it has become. Come on people, get your act together and start reporting real news again, and leave the gossip to Gossip Girl, or Ask Kristen on E!

By TREE at 8:15 PM ON 03/10/09

Good call, Shelverman. I did not think my post would be that cryptic. Maybe if I would have said something about Jim Carrey more people would have got the joke.

By Bruce_Wayne at 1:29 PM ON 03/11/09

?? BS!!! Sorely disappointed that this made it thus far! Gimme a break! What a load!!! If Bale's out, Nolan is too! What is SciFi gonna post next?? Joel Schumaker to replace Christopher Nolan for Batman 3???

By nonfreak at 6:43 PM ON 03/11/09

Guess it all depends on how many "hissy-fits" of Bale's the studio wishes to put up with. First, the incident with his mother and (I think) sister over a year ago, then, the recently released melt down on the set of Terminator Salvation. Much like Lindsey Lohan, the studio may just decide the bad publicity is just not worth it anymore. Or, they may decide to keep him. Who knows? Time will tell.

By Idiotscantype at 8:38 AM ON 03/12/09

First, @Ubercritic, I don't think anyone here was referencing whether Worthington could not act. No need to get your undies in a bunch about Bale. I think you made it clear that you are a fan of Worthington, as is the Herald, hence the bogus rumor. Secondly, some of WB's employees were asked about Bale's rant on the closed set, and their response was that, amiss laughter, the top dog of WB curses and performs worse than Bale ever did, so it wasn't even an issue. Notice I said a closed set. There are legal issues. Privacy documents are signed on movie sets among other things. Never mind that Bale has a 3 deal contract, but WB is not going to fire Bale over an audio clip that was taken out of context anyway, and should have never been released in the first place. They would open their doors up for a lawsuit.

By luney at 4:36 PM ON 03/15/09

"only hurting their reputation"? The reputation of a network called "scifi", that airs a pro "wrestling" show?

By Melange at 6:04 AM ON 04/04/09

After all this, I suppose Sam Worthington will not be appearing in the Peter Berg remake of Dune, nor fellow Perth, Australia actor Steve Innes, nor will either star in the as yet unnamed Aussie/Mafia/Gangster movie that Peter Weir is about to start filming in Sydney.

By PopcornMeth at 6:38 AM ON 05/28/09

Why? Why wouldn't Sam Worthington and Steve Innes star together in Dune or the Aussie mafia movie?
I mean, who would not want to work with Peter Weir?
They both are from Perth and have the same Sydney agent after all and both are established there.
Innes might be even be the next Mad Max, something Worthington can't be as he is just too young.

By Scrote #69 at 6:48 AM ON 07/12/09

Does it matter who really stars in (Dune) this?
It'll be an SFX movie where the players take 2nd fiddle to the spectacle.

By Peter Glass at 11:27 AM ON 07/13/09

Sam Worthington should wear a replica of the Batman armour that's in the exact image of Val Kilmer's batsuit from 1995's Batman Forever.

By Scrote #69 at 5:52 AM ON 07/28/09

Well, perhaps Worthington shouldn't really wear the Kilmer bat suit.
He's actually a bit of a weed, not too broad of shoulder, if you the the time to look close.
Skintight might not go down to well.

By Malt Liquor at 1:56 AM ON 09/05/09

I think Innes will be out of a job with the Weir Aussie mob film being canned.
Innes got cast as Mad Max for the 4th film of that franchise and Jeremy Renner, who really wants the role, called Innes in Perth to beg him to relinquish the role.
Can't see Innes or George Miller agreeing to that.

By Dsc at 5:30 PM ON 02/17/10

Bale is a douche and is burnt out. This is the best replacement for him. F you Bale! Go suck another one.

By Melange at 7:50 AM ON 02/20/10

Who is best to replace Bale?
Innes or Worthington?
Why just those two?
There actually are other actors in that country, you know.
