Ryan McPartlin, who plays Captain Awesome on NBC's spy dramedy Chuck, told SCI FI Wire that the remaining episodes of the season set up a new dynamic for a potential third season. Right now, Chuck is considered "on the bubble" for renewal.
"The last episodes of this season build up to a little bit [of a] new show for season three," McPartlin said in an exclusive phone interview earlier this week while he was promoting the spoof film Super Capers. "So we're all hoping we get to do season three, because it'll be like a new show in the way it will evolve into something that very few shows get to evolve into."
McPartlin plays the fiance of Ellie (Sarah Lancaster), sister of Chuck Bartwoski (Zachary Levi). Captain Awesome usually remains oblivious to Chuck's adventures. But in the lead-up to the season finale, expect Awesome to see more action.
"Man, it's going to be, no pun intended, awesome coming up in the last few episodes of the season," McPartlin said. "I can't really give away anything, but I get involved in many areas of Chuck's life that I haven't been involved in in the past. I start getting worried about Chuck to the point where I follow him a little bit. Let me put it that way. So fun, fun stuff, and some emotional stuff, too, which is good. Let's cross our fingers and put it out there for season three. Season three I'd become a little bit more involved, too, in the storylines."
Awesome's motives are innocent enough, but he has no idea he's delving into a world of government spies and evildoers. "Without giving much away, Awesome gets suspicious about what Chuck is doing in his life and wants to know more," McPartlin said. "So I start asking some questions that shouldn't be asked and poking my nose in places it probably shouldn't be poked in. You'll see by the end of this season if I get thrown into Chuck's other life or maybe it'll lead into next season, the potential of me getting thrown into his other life, but you won't know. I can't give any more than that. We'll just say there's some good stuff for Awesome on the way, including the wedding."
The wedding between Awesome and Ellie is scheduled to happen by the season finale. "It's set to happen," he said. "Whether it all happens as planned, you've got to watch. You know, with any wedding in any show, something can always go wrong. In Chuck, it's almost guaranteed to have something go wrong. That's the whole point of the show. You've got to have that conflict."
At least the Awesomes will be back in town for the wedding. "The Awesomes come back in town," McPartlin said, referring to his character's parents. "Morgan Fairchild comes back, and Bruce Boxleitner. They're just fantastic to work with, and of course they stir the pot as well."
McPartlin got to work with guest stars Chevy Chase and Scott Bakula as well. Chuck airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. on NBC.

OF COURSE they might get rid of it because I love it! I LOVE Chuck... WHY WHY WHY WHY!?!?! First Pushing Daisies then Eli Stone and now they might get rid of CHUCK, too! The only things left on tv are reality shows, cop shows and soaps!

I can not wait to see what they do with Chuck. Current it is one of the funniest shows out there. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a season 3, and 4, and 9, and 22. There just are not enough shows that are funny and smart and so well done.

I'm spoiler-phobic so I didn't read the article but I just had to add my comment that Chuck is the most fun show on tv at the moment, and one of the best of this decade for sure. The chemistry of the case is, shall I say it, awesome! I can't say I will be devastated if it is canceled but I certainly will be depressed for a long time.

Too bad we can't edit our comments here like we can on the forums. Of course I meant to say "chemistry of the cast."

While I like Awesome's character, I am not sure I would want to see a whole lot more of him being involved with the spy stuff. I think the show is absolutely perfect how it is now and I know I would watch but I would be totally nervous about them taking the show in a new direction. The whole thing about Chuck wanting Sarah and then not and then again...it's fun but it has gotten a little old. I do hope we get a 3rd season but don't change it too much...please....

I can't wait to see Devon worked into the spy storyline. That should make for some really fun adventures. NBC, renew for season 3!

Love this show. It's the only thing my wife and I watch on tv right now. Keep the show on for a 3rd season!

It's a shame Chuck is on NBC and not USA. It would get the support it deserves there. Just look at shows like Psych, Monk, and Burn Notice. Chuck would be right at home there.

I agree with everyone, totally! Why are shows with imagination and quality dumped for lame reality shows and game shows and the obligatory never getting resolution soaps. Does no one pay attention that soaps are failing, as an afternoon show. And yet, let's try the night time venue. The game shows are good for short attention spans and the soaps are no-where fast , as far as plots and resolutions. It won't be long before they start pulling out the multiple marraiges and green pea spitting demons, just to try to keep a brain dead audience. Why Is TV ratings going down? Because the Quality Is Down! Keep Chuck and all the other good shows that are on the financial bubble or lose the rest of us as a viewing audience. Thank You

Once again, a really good show that will go by the wayside for Reality TV. Sorry, I think someone at USA should see they could take advantage and keep CHUCK going. I also liked Pushing Daisy, I really thought the Stations were finally going to give us amusement and light hearted fun....NOT they'd rather show CRAP....

You guys are 100% right. Networks love to dump creative, fun, intelligent shows like Daisies, Journeyman, etc. but they leave CRAP like reality shows on because the majority of the American public who watches television today is DUMB.
Keep Chuck on the air... or you really prove my point.

I am hopeful that NBC will give such a quality show a chance. Chuck has progressively gotten better with a premise everyone predicted would get stale. I see it being even better in season 3 and beyond. The writers have proven to be very imaginative. Hope we get to see where they have Chuck heading in the future.

Based on the numbers, Chuck has a very good shot at being renewed for another season. This site has the predictions based on numbers, etc.

At least it isn't on Fox, where all good shows go to die.
By Botch316 at 10:28 AM ON 04/14/09
Of course it will be cancelled like every other good show of the last decade the had the misfortune of hitting a "big" network. Eventually we'll have 24 hours of (non) reality CRAP on every channel.

Best show on tv. Only show my entire family sits around TOGETHER and watches. Its alot of fun. If NBC is stupid enough to drop it, hope someone picks it up (USA)
