Fictionalized Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft comic heads for film

Fictionalized \<i\>Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft\<\/i\> comic heads for film

Universal has bought the film rights to The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft, Image Comics' graphic novel, created by Mac Carter and Jeff Blitz, Variety reported.

The project is envisioned as a potential directing vehicle for Ron Howard. The book drops on April 8.

The graphic novel borrows elements from Lovecraft's life, such as his family's struggle with mental illness and his own bouts with writer's block, and transforms the young writer's darkest nightmares into reality when he comes across a book that puts a curse on him and lets the evils he conjures up loose on the world.

Lovecraft, who died in 1937, is considered one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th century.

Carter, a commercial director, will pen the script and serve as executive producer alongside Blitz. Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer and Howard are producers.

God, please, do not let them muck this up!

Um...why not just make a decent movie of one of his actual stories?

By TheMachine at 3:45 AM ON 03/26/09

Yea, why not make a good movie out of one of his many short stories.

why do I get the feeling this will suck hard ? oh yeah, cos every time film-makers get hold of lovecraft they mess it up because they lack the talent or understanding of his work to do it justice. Itll probably be as unwatchable as Mandy's posts here are cringeworthy.

Also, I agree with Jastonthegreat/themachine.

I agree !!!!1
All Holywood has done so far with HPL is a disservice to his writings and the effect those stories still have today. The best HPL we have ever seen was the fan made CAll Of Cthulu which I thought rocked. Why Hollywood can not seem to be able to make a real adaptation tasking place in the 20's - 30's is pretty understandable.
Hollywood makes YARM (yet another remake) and they are a bunch of greedy schmucks.I doubt we ever see a decent HPL from that direction.

Hollywood generally requires a love story and a happy ending. Lovecraft stories have neither. Thus, Hollywood typically avoids or ruins Lovecraft stories. We will see what happens with this one.

I can't imagine that Ron Howard would do anything but his best in really trying to get a Lovecraftian feel across. That being said, it is hard to imagine Ron Howard directing horror.

If he does it good it will be a real coup as it will show some fantastic directorial range.

Yep, agree, hollywood has made poor Lovecraft roll in his grave. Case in point, the genetically engineered extradimensional Squid from the Watchmen graphic novel was simply deleted form the film version. Hollywood seems to think that Lovecraftian elements are too silly for film audiences. Whatever, like with all Alan Moore film adaptations I dont expect them to do Lovecraft justice either. Bah.

Guillermo Del Toro would be a much better choice as Director for anything Lovecraftian. Has anyone been paying attention to the horror films coming out of Spain lately?

Del Torro is making a version of At the Mountains of Madness.
