Green Lantern producer shines a light on emerald hero's origins

\<em\>Green Lantern\<\/em\> producer shines a light on emerald hero\'s origins

Producer Donald De Line talked with ComingSoon.net about his long-in-development movie based on the DC Comics character Green Lantern, which just had its release date set for Dec. 17, 2010.

"Our story is the Hal Jordan origin story, but creating the character of Hal Jordan that is a real character that will resonate with the fanbase is what we need to do," said the producer, who is also responsible for the upcoming high-profile releases I Love You, Man and Observe and Report. "You have to make him credible and somebody to care about and tell a good story, and I think if we do that we'll be okay."

De Line denied rumors about deliberately going younger with Hal Jordan, something that came out of bogus stories about Anton Yelchin auditioning. "Not really, late '20s, early '30s," he said.

...so we're going to set this one apart from every other (solo) super-hero movie by making it an origin story and by focussing on the man behind the mask....

BORING.

By whocares? at 12:43 PM ON 03/09/09

It's a cop out on many levels. It gives the studio a reason to focus on less expensive dialogue scenes (non-costume and non-action) instead of costlier FX scenes (you know, the ones we actually go to movies to see). Yep, thanatos, you are correct. Boring and cheap. I'd rather just not have a Green Lantern movie if this is going to be the case.

By Spideywulf at 12:58 PM ON 03/09/09

wow, this is why im for abortion., thanks for making another horrible DC movie
How many times do the ppl at DC need to learn thier lesson.

By rkf at 1:00 PM ON 03/09/09

Jeez. The movie won't even be released for nearly 2 years. They haven't even cast it yet, let alone begun production, and already you're moaning about it not being the GL movie YOU want to see.

At least wait for the trailers before you begin whining and plotting your vengeance.

wow,This is why im for abortion.
How many times does it take for the ppl at DC to learn their lesson...just stop making movies other than Batman and stick to cartoons.

It doesn't hurt DC if the movie stinks or not. It does no permanent harm to the character and DC gets a decent amount of cash that may get replowed into the company.

Marvel probably makes more money on movies than comics these days.

By bbiii at 1:31 PM ON 03/09/09

Yeah, how dare they actually try and make a movie that has depth to it. How dare they try do make people care about characters. How dare they make a movie that more than just a small group of obsessed comic fans want to see.

Don't they know good movies are those with no plot and plenty of CGI.

By Moosalini at 1:36 PM ON 03/09/09

I'm with rkf on this one. I am a comic geek and have Green Lantern issues back to the like #70. Back in the 70's! The fact that they are doing this movie at all is fantastic! It's about time that GL got a chance to shine in the spotlight. But now the whining and pining will start that a really good movie should be made. Sheesh. wait till there is something concrete up somewhere before you drag down the concept. I am sure that you can only envision a poorly made movie but that could be why you are not working in Hollywood and have the GRAND visions that the writers, producers, and directors have that ACTUALLY work there do. Any movie that comes out on a comic character helps to push the industry along. There should be more movies not less. Try and keep the faith!

By Rich at 2:37 PM ON 03/09/09

If they're going with the Greg Berlanti/Michael Green/ Marc Guggenheim script I read, then you don't need to worry about there being a lack of sfx or superheroics.

It's a solid script with lots of scifi, action AND character development.

By PDXCHawk at 2:50 PM ON 03/09/09

I will now read a list of good superhero/sci-fi movies that go for all-action and no human character exploration or plot development:

......

All done. Want me to read it again?

By IsoTek at 3:51 PM ON 03/09/09

I'm with Moosalini on this one. Its about time he got his due and I am really glad they chose Hal's story as the kickoff for this movie franchise.

Huh?
I'm supposed to wait until *after* the movie is made to voice my dislike (and, apparently the dislike of several others). Granted, nobody involved in the production will probably ever read this, but how does posting *after* the movie has been made help?

By The Colonel at 5:14 PM ON 03/09/09

First, everyone is jumping the gun. Producers and directors often mislead the entertainment media industry in an effort ti keep everyone from discovering exactly what's going on with the movie. Since Warner Brothers and D.C. Comics have the final say on the script, don't look for producers to be cutting a movie about the 'slice of life.''

Secondly, the movie has yet to be cast let alone pre-production. Remember, producers often mislead the media and this may just be a clever attempt at distracting everyone.

I honestly think that Warner Brothers is hoping to produce Green Lantern as a hopeful contender for the Iron Man series of movies. I seriously douobt that this movie won't be an action movie full of special effects and I think we might see a scrtipt along the lines as that reviewed by the Latino Review.

By rkf at 5:38 PM ON 03/09/09

"Huh? I'm supposed to wait until *after* the movie is made to voice my dislike?"

Maybe you should re-read that bit. It usually helps, when evaluating a movie, book, song, or other work of art or literature to have actually experienced the work, yes. Moreover, not only have you not experienced the work, you know almost nothing about it; it's not even in pre-production. Nothing at all has been completed; it's barely been contemplated.

Ultimately, if you're so dead-set against it, two years before the fact, don't go and see it. You can cuddle up to your back issues of "Green Lantern & Green Arrow" (with special guest appearances by Black Canary and Star Sapphire) and revel in the "toldyasos."

Many people have mentioned it before, but I'm thinking it bears repeating. Ever since Sci Fi Wire changed the format, the amount of fanboy angst and whining has just gone through the proverbial roof.

By jbs780 at 5:44 PM ON 03/09/09

Bare this in mind also...while most of us who come here know who Green lantern is, and who Hal Jordan is...not everyone does. THAT'S RIGHT! NOT EVERYONE READS COMIC BOOKS...or did when they were kids. That is why these super hero flick series usually start out with the character';s origin. The producers want everyone, not just us comic readers from way back to go see the furslurgener movie!

By hermymy at 8:45 PM ON 03/09/09

as a huge GL fan i'm just happy there making the movie.l hate how some people are trashing a movie that won't come out for to years.i just want to see hal fly in space and go head to head with sinestro

By Farview at 10:20 PM ON 03/09/09

What's with all the hostility here? Green Lantern is the best! Who knows how the movie will turn out, but it sounds like they have a decent team in place and they're going with the best GL, Hal Jordan, as the main character instead or one of the lame-o stand in GLs. Give things a chance.

By PALADIN at 7:32 AM ON 03/10/09

HA ! ...I love it when anal-retentive fanboys cry....

Before one scene of the movie is shot, you already see it as 'boring' because of a stated interntion of exploring Hal Jordan`s personality....
Guess What?
"Batman Begins' did the same thing with Bruce Wayne !
I hope that we are lucky enough to be 'bored' like that with GL.

By aberzombie at 8:14 AM ON 03/10/09

I'm really looking forward to this movie. GL has been one of my favorites for years. Any theories on who should play the character? They're going for late 20s, early 30s - two guys I can think of right away are James Marsden and David Boreanaz.

By DC Fan at 8:33 AM ON 03/10/09

I have to go with RKF as well on this one... we've had super-hero movies that focused purely on big action, big effects and big explosions and they generally are terrible. Christopher Nolan's take on Batman examined the man behind the mask and has been a success. I'm all for a GL movie that gets into Hal Jordan's head and shows what makes him tick rather than 2 hours of big CGI and no plot.

HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA! He actually thinks he has a voice! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH! He believes producers read these posts and "take it under advisement." He's funny.

By lennychuck at 8:40 AM ON 03/10/09

Oh, and by the way, you do have a "voice" after the movie's made. It's called, "Nah, let's see something else."

By Teacher at 11:22 PM ON 03/10/09

Why do you people get so upset about this? if you do not like the trail don't go to the movie. Hey I have an idea skip the movie, video games, comcon and go to the gym, OR write a script and make or own movie!

By whocares? at 12:02 AM ON 03/12/09

Must everyone deal with extremes? I'm not saying to replace character development with all-explosions-all-the-time. It's just that, when I pay money to see a Green Lantern movie, I want to actually see him in costume from time to time throughout the movie--not just for 2 minutes at the end. Many origin stories fall into that trap/routine, and, as a fanboy (if you are reading this, you are one to) I find that too frustrating to support. Everyone is right in the sense that it's too early to judge. I'm just saying that IF the movie is about Hal Jordan at the expense of Green Lantern, then I'll have a hard time getting excited about it. Iron Man had probably the best balance of characterization, plot and action, but even then, I felt that Iron Man didn't get enough screen time and the ending fell a little flat. (On a side note: My God--is it in every actor's contract that their mask/helmet MUST come off during the final battle scene? That sure sucks the life out of the moment for me.)

By DarkNeo at 12:19 PM ON 01/18/10

The GL movie is already showing ear marks of being a disaster. Budget issues, moving locations and changing story lines. Hollywood has no clue or idea about the GL legacy and it's origins.
