It is a dark time for the republic: The economy's so bad some ardent sci-fi fans have had to sell off their prized possessions, CNN reports.
That includes this CNN "iReporter," who posts images of his original Star Wars stormtrooper costume, which he sold for $700, and a Lord of the Rings Nazgul Ringwraith costume, which he sold for $2,000 to pay off his wedding.

I feel badly for these fans. They obviously meant a lot for them to an obsessive degree to buy them and it's sad that they have to give them up.

@Muldfeld: most people don't buy these costumes... the vast majority of them create them.

I have no sympathy for these Fanboys

It is a shame we nerds dedicated most of our life thinking we were safe buying"investing" in cool movie props and other stuff only to be educated by large corporate companies causing us to sell our precious things by making the economy so bad. I'm going Mom and Pop shops all the way. Screw the big man....I'll never eat fast food or drink main line soda"Pepsi or Coca Cola" again....my single attempt may not amount to much--NERDS UNITE---Form of a corporate kidney stone...many may overcome....LOL

upartyup2: you're not alone, my friend. I too have decided to forgo the endless mass market stores who export their entire labor force just so some dink can brag she or he paid two dollars for a cheaply made shirt. Buying local whenever I possibly can...for as long as I can.
I feel sorry for the fans for having to sell off their memorabilia. I've got quite a few pieces of scifi "finds" I've accumulated over the years, and it would break my heart to have to part with them. But in this economy, you do what you have to. And Farscape/Star Trek/Etc...falls lower on the priority list than bills.

I feel for these people being forced to sell their prized possessions like those.
But, there's one thing I WILL NEVER SELL....my Hofner Beatle bass that was actually signed by McCartney himself....ok, he signed the pick guard, but the bass itself is too dear to me.

Why is this even a story when people are selling things they really NEED in order to support their families. Costumes are definitely luxury items. Besides, that sandtrooper SUCKS! He's got crappy FX armor with the wrong knee plate, no belt pouches, and everyone knows sandies don't have drop boxes. He should be able to do better next time.
