Chris Pine told reporters that he plays the iconic role of Capt. James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek a bit differently from William Shatner, who originated the role in the classic 1960s TV show, and traces the character's arc from an immature rebel to the man fans know and love. (Spoilers ahead!)
"What was presented to me was this vision of Kirk in the script as an angry young kid who is dealing with some heavy family s--t and is angry at the world," Pine told reporters in a group interview last weekend in Los Angeles. "He's a rebel without a cause. I think everyone can remember what it's like to be 15, and he's a 25-year-old 15-year-old! He has to mold all that energy and that drive and all that passion and obstinance and the spectrum of emotions into the man that Kirk then becomes, which is the captain of the ship."
An early scene in the movie shows Kirk in a drunken bar fight the night before he boards the Enterprise and changes his destiny. "For our purposes and our script, this is the arc of this character, from that kid, that boy-man, presented with a challenge, to the boy becoming the man he becomes towards the end of the movie," Pine said.
Another scene highlights some of the film's broad comedy, in which Kirk has a hilarious side effect thanks to one of Bones' (Karl Urban) experimental injections. Pine said that he got to play a wide variety of scenes.
"I loved it," he said. "I had the easiest job on the planet. I got to do everything: comedy, drama, ... the whole nine. Someone like Zach [Zachary Quinto, playing the stoic Spock], that takes a real actor to [do]. ... He's got to take those emotions and make them minimal, to sit on them and play this sort of minimal acting. And I get to explode out into the world. The humor was really fun. I'm hopeful that it will allow people into this world [who] kind of think of Trek as this campy world where you couldn't laugh at all. It's a lot easier to buy into the drama with the humor: It can connect people to the characters, and J.J.'s got an incredible sense of comic timing, and he's the best person for that job, to know when it's too much."
Like director Abrams, Pine has previously said that he always preferred Star Wars to Star Trek as a moviegoer. But now he's gained an appreciation for Trek's underlying optimism. "Not being a fan, I didn't understand why it was so appealing," Pine admitted. "But it's an optimistic series. It's different to The Dark Knight or Watchmen. It's not dark and gritty and Blade Runner-esque. It's bright and funny and done with a wink. How can people not respond to that? I think it's pure, wonderful entertainment with a real subcurrent of great ideas. This is a different species of film."
Star Trek opens on May 8.

He is not Capt. Kirk! He may be Lt. Kirk or Ltjg. Kirk but he is not Capt. yet. The Capt. is Capt. Pike.

I SAID IT BEFORE ..WHAT FOOL AT PARAMOUNT PUT PEOPLE WHO WERE NOT FANS IN CHARGE OF THIS MOVIE AND IN THE LEAD ROLES?
By Daniel at 4:21 PM ON 03/05/09
Muadib - they had fans in charge of the franchise and ran the damn thing into the ground. You're damn lucky that someone with talent and integrity are in charge of it and has put life back into a product that was DOA five years ago.

Only one kirk for startrek series. Should have went earlerlike with Archer on Enterprise series.
By Bluesman at 4:47 PM ON 03/05/09
I've been a fan of Star Trek since its beginning and have always been open to new ideas. It's time for the FanBoys to grow up and get over it. The time for the story of how Kirk became Captain is LONG overdue and its time is NOW. I hope they finally tell us the real story of the Kobyashi Maru. :D
By Pete at 5:02 PM ON 03/05/09
AMEN, Bluesman!!! I was there when it premiered, I watched every episode of every series, bought my tickets to every movie and when I was younger bought any, and everything Star Trek. I've read most of the Trek books up until about 18 years ago (guess when we had our first child!) and have always loved Star Trek, so some could say I classify as a "FanBoy" in certain ways, but I'm so glad this reworking is getting done.
Trek's arteries were clogged, its vision blurring and it's joints arthritic. A new vision was just what the doctor ordered.

I was born the year trek aired.
I have Kirk in my veins. I look forward to this movie and I have some trepidation.
I agree. They needed a new voice and new talent. Rick Berman's leadership through the different series left it wanting somewhat. "Enterprise" would have done far better under a different creative hood. Remember St:2 and 6, arguably some of the best Trek movies ever made were written by Nick Meyer, someone who had no appreciation for trek before he got started. Or Harve Bennett for that matter.
Gene, Bless his soul, was no good for Trek anymore. He should have just let it go to someone else back after the sixties.
So good luck Trek!

I have to agree with Krelm, Chris Pine is not playing Capt Kirk, at most he's playing Lt. Kirk, most likely Ensign Kirk, or civilian Kirk. Does SciFi even know about fact checking?
By Captain Zacary R Wildstar of the S.S.D. Dexterous at 8:48 PM ON 03/05/09
I also agree with Bluesman! I would like to see a Kobyashi Maru Scene. And I know I Will THIS WHOLE MOVIE IS A Kobyashi Maru! A no win situation, Wish I could REPROGRAM the whole movie to save ALL the Star Trek fans from JJ Abrams. I guess this movie really is a test of character, I hope JJ Abrams characters stand up to the originals.

Personally, I'm excited to see something "new and different" in the Star Trek line. This seems so fresh compared to the last few movie offerings from the ST universe. My only grumble is that the interior shots seem SO different than the original series. I know they couldn't make it look 60's cheesy, but at least a similar layout and color scheme would be nice. Updated yes, but not SO different looking.
By Anachronite at 10:27 PM ON 03/05/09
have been a fan of trek from the beginning. cant wait for this update. it's time. fellow trekkies and trekkers alike, get over it! this movie is gonna rock!

Who is this Kirk person anyway.
When will they show the true stars of the show.
STAR TREK
THE KLINGON EMPIRE
This Earthling Kirk is but a bystander in the glare of the glorious Empire .

I have to agree with Bluesman....THis is a freaking movie...Its fiction. Get over your hate and deal with it, there is a new Trek in town and like it or not its going to show. This is a movie, its not a life saving experience people. That said, everytime Chris Pine opens his mouth about Kirk I cringe, but ...BUT. I am still going to see the movie and I still support the idea Trek needed a kick in the complacency.
By Gilveron at 12:54 AM ON 03/06/09
While I'm optimistic about this movie, I do have one problem. What Mr. Pine says of Kirk's backstory is completely inconsistent with series canon (to which JJ Abrams pledged to be as true as possible). According to TOS, Kirk was a nerdy bookworm who grew more confident and adventurous as he aged. Picard was the cocky, hell-bent-for-leather bad boy who gained wisdom through his experiences at Starfleet. But I guess a nerdy Kirk wouldn't have made for a very interesting movie.
Just curious, do you think people would be less in a tizzy if this had been a TNG origins story rather than TOS?
By WnyGuy14787 at 12:58 AM ON 03/06/09
I was unhappy at first with the idea of a movie about about Kirk and the gang as kids. Sounded too much like a Saturday morning cartoon. But it sounds like they may breath some new life into TREK, and that's a good thing. Less dark and gloomy and some good comradery between the characters is what made the original Star Trek fun to watch. I liked "The Next Generation" but the characters were too stiff and cardboard-ish. After reading some of the reviews, I am looking forward to this movie. I still hope that they consider continuing the Trek storyline, instead of going back into it's past.
Good Luck, and godspeed...
PS: Yes, I hope they include the "Kobyashi Maru" Scene.
LOL

'm really excited about this movie. I've been a fan since later Voyager (I was in about 3rd or 4th grade at the time, so I never really got to watch much of TOS). I've seen a bit of it, though, and I think the movie is going to be an interesting, updated take on it. I love J.J Abrams' work and can't wait for the movie to come out.
By Jason Chapman at 3:16 AM ON 03/06/09
I like Star Trek, its good escapism even if they do over repeat it in Virgin 1 and Bravo. I think the franchise is overdue for a revamp, and I do like the look of the Enterprise. The trouble with being a diehard fan is you can get stuck in a rut and get too used to a certain way things are presented, so when a franchise is reinvented fans often feel that they’ve been cheated. Like many other people who have made comments I have been watching Trek since the seventies and I am more than happy to go with the flow and see how this film turns out.
By Noni at 5:35 AM ON 03/06/09
Well once Kirk shows up on the island all of the time traveling will stop and the fanboys will be stuck in the 70s. They can enjoy the original trek then. :) Wait wrong Abrams thing.
By Captain Jack Harkness at 9:24 AM ON 03/06/09
Actually, at this time, shouldn't Kirk be on Tarsus IV with Kevin Riley getting chased by Kodos the Executioner's death squads? Star Trek canon? JJ and crew never 'erd of it, lov.
By MattT at 2:26 PM ON 03/06/09
Cap'n Jack is absolutely right! The Tarsus 4 tragedy would have a huge impact on the development of Kirk's character.
By Captain Zacary R Wildstar of the S.S.D. Dexterous at 5:09 PM ON 03/06/09
I wish I could be a Starfleet captain. Then I'd bag all the hot green Orion slaves. Until then, I'll just pretend.
By Captain Zacary R Wildstar of the S.S.D. Dexterous at 7:03 PM ON 03/06/09
To any who read the comment above. I'm sorry that statement was not sent by me. It was an imposter who I guess doesn't have maturity to express themselves as themselves. But to answer that person. You can't pretend to be a captain Starship or otherwise. You either are born to the job or your not. Sorry Jaxxon, I give you no mercy, You deserve no pity It serves you right. Here Endith the lesson
By Spaceman Spiff at 6:31 PM ON 03/07/09
I guess I am one of those fanboys who have no life. Because based on the trailers I am not going to like this movie. That is I am not going to like it as Star Trek, because it is not Star Trek. More like JJ Trek. It may be a kick ass action flick. It may even be a kick ass science fiction flick.
Now I have no problem with new actors doing their own thing. it would be impossible for antone to imitate Shatner and I wouln't want them to try because that's all it would be. But this movie seems to completely ignore it;s source material. Chris pine says above that their is a scene where kirk is in a bar fight the night before he boards the Enterprise. Now unless someone can tell me I'm wrong I am enfering from that statement that A young Kirk who is not even a cadet yet is taken aboard a starship and allowed to take command. This makes absolutely no logical sense at all and it's this sense of illogicality that bugs me about this film.
Their is a scene in the trailer that shows kirk watching the enterprise being constructed. First the illogicality of constructing multi million ton startship on the ground, second it;s surrounded by a wire fence for crying out ;loud. Does starfleet have no sense of security?
I predict that this film will have no mention of Kirk's Kobeyoshe Maru test, his rvalry with fellow cadet Finnigan and probably not even Christopher Pike.
Abrams seems to have decided to just forget about and rewrite Treks history. The worst thing he could have done was use time travel in this movie. I once heard someone say when the producers of Trek get desperate they resort to time travel and they usually muck it up.
If I go and see it at the theater I will wait until it reaches the discount theater. I will not pay 7 or 8 bucks to see this...whatever it is.
By Rob at 8:48 AM ON 03/08/09
Sapceman Spiff, all you say will fall upon deaf ears. It's sad, but Paramount is like any other company, it only cares about the money it will rake in from another mindless remake. Abrams is nothing but a manipulator who originally started this controversy when he announced his intentions to do this movie his way, & "F*ck the fans". He knew it would draw the attention it has & is loving every minute of it. People like us don't matter in the long run, only what someone else can use us for to their own ends.
By Templar Reese at 12:05 PM ON 03/08/09
Oh My God!!! I have never seen so many comments on any other story in SciFi. I was annoyed at first that they were doing a revision to the original cast and why could they not just do another area of the ST universe? But it is a movie, it is made and it looks like it could be good. Just forget about all the past, forget about "canon" and continuity and enjoy the movie. Shatners "get a life" statement holds truer now than every!! Are you so lost in your own life that you need to escape through the fictional world created ovr 40 years ago? Not like the original series?? God I would hope NOT!!! It takes a worn out story and series and breathes new life and modernizes it.
Just enjoy it and relax....

"Just forget about all the past, forget about "canon" and continuity and enjoy the movie. Just enjoy it and relax...."
What are you on, valium?
For some of us, this is one of our fondest childhood memories they're frakking around with. For me, I started living with Star Trek in Sept 1966. What's one of your happy childhood memories sweetpea? Batman, Superman, Transformers, Teletubbies, Barney? Let me know so that when someone makes a movie that drives a stake through its heart I can say hey, "Just enjoy it and relax...."
By DC Fan at 9:45 AM ON 03/09/09
I've been a Trek fan my whole life. This franchise has meant actually dollars and cents to me, which is why I say just go see the movie before prejudging it. Everyone's making suppositions about canon and characterizations based purely on what they've seen in trailers, read online and seen said in very broad strokes in interviews. No meat and potato details have been released. So let me drop a little nugget into everyone's indignation... we know that the Romulans go back in time to try and change things. Who's to say that they weren't successful and things do get changed, ala "The City on the Edge of Forever"? How do we know that what everyone's calling blasphemy isn't an alternate timeline or reality? That's right... we don't because none of us have seen the movie. I'll tell you why I think this may be what's going on... for the past couple of years, Pocket Books has spent an awful lout of time exploring not just the Mirror Universe, but the myriads of universes out there. The IDW comic book Star Trek: Countdown is an officially approved prequel to the movie and it features an appearance by CAPTAIN Data of the USS Enterprise in the first issue and clearly shows an alternate timeline in the second. And then there's Nero's words in the new trailer... "James Kirk was a great man... you are NOT that man..." (or something along those lines... I've only seen the trailer once so far). Maybe the elder Spock isn't there to STOP the Rolumlans, but to FIX the damage they have already done. It would explain a lot of the concerns people are having. So I ask again, before trashing this film as heresy, please go see it with an open mind. It's the LAST shot we have at Trek. As far as Paramount was concerned, Trek was dead. They were kind of flustered when they signed Abrams to an exclusive deal and he said he wanted to bring Trek back. If this movie fails, Trek is dead and there's NO coming back. There needs to be new blood. If that new blood is a new creative direction, new fans, or a new look for the Enterprise, I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt if it keeps Trek in the American consciousness.
By TrekFan1969 at 3:13 PM ON 03/09/09
If a movie will ruin your childhood memories, you might want to see a shrink about your psychiatric instabilities.
By TrekFan1969 at 9:27 PM ON 03/09/09
So, you're telling me that two hours of film, shown for a few weeks in cinemas nationwide will be enough to "drive a stake through the heart" of emotionally moving memories? I would hate to see what it takes to destroy your first kiss or the image of your first love.
If they're so easily manipulated, maybe those memories aren't as great as you think. Mine will persevere beyond any failed attempts at movie magic because I believe in them.
By TrekFan1966 at 9:53 PM ON 03/09/09
I'm voting with my wallet as well. I WILL be there. probably more than once.
I've loved Trek for over 42 years. I want it to "live long and prosper." The only way for that to happen is for someone to reinvigorate the franchise.
I think this film may do just that.
By Spaceman Spiff at 9:59 PM ON 03/10/09
Star Trek did not need a reboot. It needed a director who understands it and knows how to make a good trek film Like Nicholas Meyer.
Fans of this movie keep explaining away all the inconsistancies as an alternate timeline. If Abrams had made a decent film there woiuld have been no need for an alternate timeline.
TNG had an episode with scotty, I'm sure you all remember it. He went into the holodeck and began reminiscing about the past by recreatinmg the old enterprise bridge. Exactly as it was in TOS. it didn't seem clunky or outdated.
DS9 did a timetravel episode with the tribbles, also a memorable episode. They went back to space station K-7. all the ships and the station and everything else was exactly as it appeared in the old series just tweeked a bit with CGI effects to show more details. No problem. Not clunky or outdated.
Enterprise did a series of episodes about the mirror universe. the ship and uniforms looked just as they did in the old series, again, not clinky or outdated. Just more detail shown because the effects availible were better than they were in the 60's.
So, why couldn't Abrams have done something similar to that?Because Abrams wanted to turn Trek into HIS baby and make it the way he thought it should be. He wanted to make it "BETTER". Paramount being desperate to keep making money from their golden franchise which was starting to turn green, gave him carte blanche.
Well in my opinion this movie will be the final nail in the coffin.
By ctmm at 12:34 AM ON 03/11/09
Enterprise was a good serieswish it would come back with same cast
By Mortis at 6:50 PM ON 03/13/09
I agree, cttm. Enterprise was probably the last real Star Trek we'll ever see. Spaceman Spiff is probably right, too. Turning Star Trek into Star Wars makes it not Star Trek anymore, no matter how hard you try to convince others so.
