How Chuck's season finale will change the game and look ahead
Josh Schwartz, executive producer and co-creator of NBC's spy comedy/drama Chuck, told reporters that the upcoming second-season finale will change the game for the show in a way that will satisfy viewers whether the show is picked up for a third season or not.
"Let me figure out how to parse this answer," Schwartz said in a group interview at WonderCon in San Francisco on Sunday. "It will end in a way that's going to launch the show into season three with a real—it's a game-changer. I think that it'll be immensely satisfying in its own right, but it also really, really launches the show in a way that, you know, we're already breaking season three stories and can't wait to start telling them."
Schwartz maintains a positive attitude about a third-season pickup for the series, which has won critical praise but has seen lackluster ratings. "The network has been incredibly supportive of the show, and there's a lot of internal support for the show," Schwartz said. "Creatively, they're really happy with the show. They recognize the challenges of the time period we're in and all of the sort of hiatus impediments that have been thrown in our way. So I think, you know, on that level it's very positive. But, you know, we still have several more months to go, and ... it's very competitive, [up against ABC's] Dancing With the Stars this year. Will Jewel out-dance Denise Richards? I know that I can't wait. And Jewel's husband also, go with the soft shoe, he's in there. Yeah, yeah. So, um, so you know, I think we feel very, very optimistic, and we feel really, really good about the show creatively, and I think you know, everything that we can control, we feel very good about."
Is there a ratings number the show has to hit in the final episodes of the season? "If there is a threshold number, we have not heard it yet," Schwartz said, adding: "NBC's been very good about [renewing] the shows that they love based on creativity alone."
As for the show's season finale, Schwartz said: "This is our finale. This would be our finale whether we knew we were picked up, whether ... we were picked up for next year or five years. This is what we've been wanting to do for a while, and we've had this planned since the beginning of season one."
One positive sign for Chuck fans: Schwartz and co-creator and executive producer Chris Fedak will be pitching season-three stories to NBC this week. "They can't wait to hear what the new adventures of Chuck will be," Schwartz said. Chuck airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Chuck is, by far, my favorite show on TV. In an era where is seems that the funny shows are on a downtick, Chuck stands out with SMART funny shows. NBC has to understand that it puts it up against the number one show on TV, not named American Idol, in Dancing witht the Stars. Here is hoping that NBC shows this show the love it deserves.

In the vast wasteland that TV has become - particularly big three network TV - Chuck is a jewel. I think it has appeal across a wide demographic (I'm no kid!) and the characters are well developed. More more more!

Our whole family loves Chuck and Monday night is reserved just for this show. The writers are fabulous and intelligent and funny and the cast ads all the humor, good looks, charm and wonderful acting to make it a terrific show. Zachary Levy is THE best, so natural, and all the cast is very much appreciated.

The networks need to learn to schedule. The best shows of the week are Chuck and How I Met Your Mother which go head to head on Monday night. The Bachelor also hits the same time slot. The networks need to move a second place show to dominate in another spot instead of each getting ok ratings at the prime spot.

Every episode this season so far has been great. I can't imagine this show not being picked up for a third season. And I think NBC should understand that despite really tough Monday night competition and the fact that the network itself isn't doing so well overall, the show has been doing the best that it can. The rating trend for this show go up almost week after week (albeit just a little) and I hope NBC sees that.

Sure, they need ratings and ad support, but Chuck is currently above the demo index for NBC, so nothing will stop it from getting a third season. Chuck grabbed me from day one, and it is the snappiest, sharpest, funniest show out there. I stay home on Mondays to watch it. The cynical businessman in me says NBC will keep it because they don't have anything else to replace it; the idealist in my says they'll keep it because it's so well-written and acted. The human in me just says Lord, please bring these folks back for a third season!

Besides the Law and Order shows, Chuck is about the only show I watch. Its funny, it has adventure, it has an All-American Nice guy hero, and a beautiful female spy.
Whats not to like. In a way....this is kind of the old Scarecrow and Mrs King series in reverse. Please bring back the show for season 3. And I hope they're not dumping Yvonne Strahovski. Whats this about a new partner? If it isn't broke...don't fix it.

We are only just starting season 2 here in scotland but i know i will be watching it till the end. Nbc shouldn't cancel this show, mabye just put it on at a different time, even a different channel in scotland if possible. Virgin1 isn't one of the most watched channels here... e4? scrubs, big bang theory etc.

Chuck is the ONLY new show I look forward to on television. Like "Cheers" two decades ago, it suffers from mediocre ratings initially, but is destined to become a classic. The fact that more people prefer to watch Dancing with the Stars just shows me that television audiences are growing more ignorant and lack appreciation for clever storylines and imagination.

I'm 60, my son is 34, and we save Mondays for Chuck, Heroes, and Medium. The "reality" shows, the "contest" shows, do not hold a candle to well scripted and well acted programs. It's like Monday is the new Friday night around here. We would be very unhappy if there were no Season Three. I mean, really, who would buy a DVD of DWTS? NBC think of the marketing stream, will ya?

By far my favorite show on TV. I watch 4 shows religiously a week....CHUCK being number one...Life...two and a half men and gary unmarried. It would be awful if I had no Chuck to watch anymore...the show is genious and everyone I tell to watch it..does and loves it! I have hooked about 30 people already and its growing! I watched season 1 episode 1 about 2 and 1/2 weeks ago. Since then I have wtached every episode and look forward to the season finale. This is a most enjoyable addiction. All the people connected to the show should be commended. It is very refreshing and Chuck's down-to-earth nice guy character is more of what "kids" need to be seeing. This show is successful without vulger language & token nudity. NBC needs to fully embrace this show and give it the recognition it so richly deserves. I agree with a previous writer that this show has what it takes to become a classic like "Cheers". I can't remember the last time a show impressed me this much or made me feel this good after viewing it.

I love watching Chuck have watched it from the beginning. Have really enjoyed this season with Scott Bakula on as Chuck's Dad very good story line, and to have Chevy Chase as a bad guy who would have thought. Love this show and the writers. By the way this is the only show I watch on NBC. Hope to continue watching the 3rd season. Thanks for a great show.

I love Chuck, its the only show I go out of my way to schedule my life around. Which may sound a little sad, but it is what it is.... But truth be told I can say there are probably to good reasons why the ratings aren't helping the show, though it deserves them. First, they are competing against shows with established fanbases, which for a new-ish show is rarely a good thing. And second, they really have drug out the "will they, won't they" between Chuck and Sarah for far too long. They should have ended that aspect midseason (2nd) and moved on to some other teaser.

I like that Morgan has matured and is following a goal, and that Chuck is looking to fulfill his potential. With the new Intersect, things should get interesting. Maybe now he'll be a real spy. Pleeeease renew Chuck for a new season! This is a big plea from overseas (all the way from Sweden). The long winter months would have been cold and boring without having "Chuck" to look forward to on the TV each week. My husband is as crazy about this show as I am so I really, really hope that there will be good news and that the show stays on!

I've been a Chuck fan since day one...yet the finale last night felt rushed and more like a mash-up of 2 or 3 episodes. I felt the ending was just wrong. It hurt me to see Chuck this way and if it comes back it won't be the same show. And while I will wait until this "new" Chuck season comes back or not...I know if it does I will miss my old Chuck.
With that said....please renew this fantastic show. I'll take in almost any form I can get it.

Chuck is one of the best shows on TV right now! 19 and seriously can't get enough of it. It's creative, funny, dramatic and fresh. NBC would be stupid to cancel. The only good show they'd have left would be the office.
I can't even believe that the ratings are even a bit low. I don't know anyone who doesn't like it. The ratings to me aren't reflecting the masses anymore. I'd be happy to fill out a survey if that would mean they would keep the shows we all love.

I think Chuck is one of the best shows on TV, and it is one of the last of a dieing breed of genuinely entertaining shows. It would be a shame to cancel it. The only reason the ratings are low is because not many people know about it and it is going head to head with already popular shows. If NBC moved it to a better time slot for season 3, it would gain a lot of popularity because of its wide demographic. It is truly a show that people of all ages, genders and races can equally enjoy. Once the show becomes more well known, NBC can put it back up against the most popular shows of other networks, and it will undoubtedly crush the competition.

what really sucked bout SEASON 2 is that they keep bringing it on and off the air for another show
which gave people to stop watching it

NBC would be stupid not to agree to several more seasons of Chuck! C'mon lets see it run for at least 5 seasons - it is sooooo entertaining. And to be honest I reckon they need to market the show better!
If 24 can go for 7 seasons and Friends for 10, I can't see why Chuck should get the chop as it is much MUCH better!

This show is GREAT and it would be sad to see it go. Watching CHUCK develop through the last 2 seasons has been awesome. His character has developed perfectly as the show progresses.
So much attention to detail like character development and relationships make this show great.

i just finished watching season 2 and it was awesome!!!!! i couldn't have asked for a better season ender. I'd be really pissed if the cancelled the show after that.

Have been watching the show since episode #1 & Love it! But i hope the show is not going the way of that finale- Totally ridiculous! I cant be without my dose of Yvonne, re-up chuck & hopefully the finale was a dream sequence!

this show is amazing. its one of those shows where every actor fits perfectly in their place. Friends is another example. Friends and Chuck are my favorite shows of all time. i showed my mom this show and she was kind of skeptical but after the first episode she loved it. so many people love this show. Lets see a Season 3 and many more

Come On! Ratings? All across the country Chuck has to compete with Monday Night Football which puts it at a disadvantage. I really like the show and always try to DVR it so that I can watch it later. If I am not able to DVR it, I will watch it ON LINE! I have watched television for more than 40 years and have only been asked to rate programming one time. WHO does these ratings? I don't believe that with todays technology they are accurate! NBC is foolish if they do not renew Chuck!

Chuck is one of the most well written and entertaining shows on tv right now. It has action, drama, comedy, and romance packed into every hour. The cast is extremely likeable and you can tell they are enjoying what they are doing just as much as you enjoy watching them. Chuck is great! Let's get a third season for Chuck!
