Legend of the Seeker adversaries face off for the first time

\<i\>Legend of the Seeker\<\/i\> adversaries face off for the first time
Darken Rahl (Craig Parker, left) finally meets Richard Cypher (Craig Horner)

It's the moment Legend of the Seeker fans have been waiting for: Richard Cypher (played by hunky Australian actor Craig Horner) will finally come face to face with that epitome of Seeker evil, Darken Rahl (Craig Parker) on this weekend's episode, "Conversion," Horner and executive producer Ken Biller told SCI FI Wire in an interview.

"I guess it's that Luke-Skywalker-meets-Darth-Vader kind of thing," Horner said. "It's a big deal. It's who he's been chasing the whole time. He's only heard stories about the tyranny of this person. When he sees him he just knows. It's just cool."

And along the way there's chains and bondage.

"Conversion" is a turning point for the series, Biller said. "They discover the extreme lengths that Darken Rahl will go to in order to exert complete control over the people of the Midlands, including trying to get for himself a new and dangerous power."

Richard will discover "that fulfilling the prophecy isn't going to be as easy as defeating Darken Rahl in a sword fight," Biller added. "It's also an episode in which Kahlan [Bridget Regan] becomes aware for the first time of a new and dangerous aspect of her powers, which will continue to play out over the course of the series."

The episode was important enough that the producers ended up reshooting the big fight scene, Horner said. "Because when we did it, we're like, 'We can do better,'" he said. "'We can make that fight better. We can flesh it out.' So we went back and did a whole half day, just getting that fight right."

Legend of the Seeker is a syndicated fantasy series that explores the journey of Richard, the Seeker, and his companions Kahlan and Zedd (Bruce Spence) as they battle to protect the Midlands from the evil Rahl. The television series is based on Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth book series.

"Conversion" premieres in syndication this weekend on Saturday, March 14, or Sunday, March 15.

It makes me wonder if the big secret is revealed. That Zedd is Richards grandfather, and....wait for it..... Darken Rahl's his father. Nevertheless it's going to be LEGENDARY!

By Dion at 6:31 AM ON 03/13/09

Though I haven't read any of the books, "The Legend Of The Seeker" is one of those series whose writing faltered at the start and actually improved as it progressed. With Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert as its producers, I was expecting the show to have a similar to the over-the-top tone that was in Kevin Sorbo's "Hercules", but luckily, that expectation wasn't met. It's closer to Xena in tone. In performance, the wonderful Bruce Spence as Zedd (where the hell has he been all these years?) and newcomer Briget Regan as Kahlan make up for any shortcomings that may be inherent in Craig Horner's acting (which is also improving as the story builds). Looking forward to this week's installment.

I'm guessing Horner gave it away a bit with his Luke and Darth Vader comment. Although, if you're familiar with the books, it's not a surprise at all.

By richardHeartskahlan at 11:47 PM ON 03/14/09

*Spoiler*

Richard Cypher is really Richard Rahl, his brother. He becomes the new (benevolent) Lord Rahl.

By tati at 2:32 PM ON 03/17/09

I was unfamiliar with the books before I watched the series, so I guess I'll have to read them for comparison.
I like this series--I hope it continues for awhile (or did they say there was a specific ending time?)

By Lili at 3:20 PM ON 03/17/09

Spoiler? Darken's brother, instead of his son? I wondered how they were going to explain Richard being about ten years younger than Darken.

Am i the only one here who thinks that this show is horrible? I originally watched the premier of this series and it got me interested in reading wizards first rule. Now since the books are what the series is based on I figured the show would follow it in some way. I couldn't of been more wrong. This show doesn't follow the book at all. Sure it takes a few things from the book, but the story is half ass backwards, and makes no sense. The whole point in keeping the last box of orden from rahl is so he can not open the right box and die in winter. They make no mention of this at all in this show. They just want to keep it from him.. All I know is I still find myself watching the show every week, but not because it is good. I watch to see what they will mess up next.

It took me the first 3 episodes before I feel in love with this series. I agree you totally get the Xena vibe from the story. I cannot wait for more!

By GRAMS09 at 4:50 PM ON 04/06/09

I think the show is GREAT!!! I can hardly wait from wk. to wk. to see the episodes.Very Happy the show got renewed.

By DanGun17 at 10:22 AM ON 04/07/09

WARNING: the following post is made by an individual who despises this show and that it has been renewed. With the way that this country as has forgotten to say suck it up and have a thick skin, and have allowed the few that become offended by something they don't like, a warning is necessary. If you are easily offended, don't read the post.

I wish Mr. Goodkind would have kept greater creative control over the TV show, rather than just signing the rights away to Disney. I love the story, the ORIGINAL story Mr.Goodkind was genius enough to write, not this sad retelling that Raimi and his sycophants are providing people. While it is true that you can never translate a novel to any kind of visual media, be it TV or Movie, a close enough translation is possible with the right people and a little effort...such as has been done with the Harry Potter series and the Lord of the Rings. Both groups of creative teams for those series have maintained a much closer representation of the novels than what Raimi and Disney are doing. Legend is coming across as an updated, revamped Xena/Hercules campy crap made for the masses. The series wouldn't have even been considered for TV if it wasn't for those of us, by the millions that have purchased and read the Sword of Truth series. The very least Disney could have done, and who is more than capable fo providing, is give a show for the real fans...not the jaw hanging-mouth open-drooling TV crowd that are too lazy to use their minds to READ or are just plain incapable. I wish the show wouldn't have gotten renewed. Now there are going to be people that love the show, go to get the books and despise the books. It's a sad state of affairs when a company, such as Disney, is too money oriented to create something that pays homage to a great story which they were incapable of creating. I loathe this show. It is made for people with no clue as to the true depth and vision that the REAL series is and what the show should be. Fans of the books should continue to boycott this show and advise everyone they know to cease watching it. I classify myself as a 'purist' in that I enjoy when a book is turned into a TV show or Movie and it stays 90% true to the original work. Legend of the Seeker maybe stays 50% true - making it a failure in every sense of the word, regardless of the mindless drones that continue to watch the show.

By Ty at 2:34 PM ON 04/13/09

For those of you out there who love this series like I do, I really recomend the 11 books that inspired this series... things really get a lot more interesting later on... I'd love to see this series keep going!!!

By Sickened at 12:51 AM ON 05/10/09

DanGun17, I could not agree with you more. I would be on here all night if I launched about what I really feel.

To sum it up, it's terrible beyond description. They really should have just written up a rip-off instead of tarnishing Mr. Goodkind's reputation with the horrible writing, casting, and directing. Oh not to mention complete BOTCH job of the story.

In my view, they are completely unrelated, the story and the crappy TV show. Hell, I would probably enjoy the series if it were not related to the Sword of Truth books. But, because of that fact, it infuriates me any time I see it on TV.

Complete disappointment, complete disgrace on Mr. Goodkind's name. I spent years being eager because Mr. Goodkind was supposed to have more creative control. I buy the first 3 books for everyone that I know who watches it, and convince them to read the story instead. It's my own way of intervening.

By Tam at 2:57 PM ON 05/15/09

Umm....DanGun.... Change the channel. Easy as that. I've read the entire book series multiple times. BIG fan of the books. I also really love the show. I can understand if you don't so, don't watch it. Obviously, people like it or it wouldn't have been renewed. Why beat the crap out of it? Just move on to another show.

By rufasa85 at 10:29 AM ON 05/17/09

i agree with dangun. so much of the series, and not small details, are totally ignored. Terry Goodkind had a clear and vivid description of the sword of truth, and it was totally ignored. his sword looks exactly everyone elses. how hard would that have been? also, why the hell isnt darken rahl blond-haired and blue eyed? again, how hard is that? Confessors are known and feared throughout the midlands, and Mr. Goodkind again paints a pretty clear picture of what kahlans dress should look like. why do richard and zedd have to announce they have a confessor everywhere they go? These are simple things that seemed to have been changed for absolutely no reason. this show is totally lacking any fan service, which is odd since the books are massively popular and the only reason it was produced. And Terry Goodkind said he had hesitated on selling the rights until he found someone whod get it right. Did you reliquish all creative control Mr. Goodkind? This series is watchable, but it wouldve been much better as an HBO miniseries, where they couldve dealt with the darker themes of the book (and people could have actually died)

By VG526 at 5:00 PM ON 05/17/09

I am a fellow reader and fan of the original Sword of Truth series, that said:

To all of the haters of the show, there's a REASON why it was named it Legend of the Seeker and NOT The Sword of Truth. It's BECAUSE Sam Raimi DIDN'T want to make a show that was following everything that happened in the book! I mean seriously, why make a show that's going to be the exact carbon copy of Terry Goodkind's amazing book series? Where's the creativity or originality in that? The creators of the show OBVIOUSLY realized how amazing the books are, and the potential they had for television, BUT they're also SMART enough to know that to keep viewers interested and to broaden the audience of those who had previously read the books and those who had not, they NEEDED to come up with different ideas and concepts, for LEGEND OF THE SEEKER! Now, I'll admit Legend of the Seeker is a show that takes a while to get into, but I also know that if people just gave it a chance and let it GROW, that they'll enjoy it. So far, the writing and the acting has VASTLY improved since the first few episodes and the writers have definitely found their niche and the actors have grown more comfortable with their roles, it's actually a pretty amazing show. Now please, If you people would stop being so freakin' SNOBBY about the books, then maybe you'd be able to actually ENJOY the show.

By rufasa85 at 8:48 AM ON 05/18/09

thats fine vg526, but it still doesnt explain why they couldnt have cast a blond actor as darken rahl, or made the sword actually look like its supposed to.

By ScifiFanGal at 3:43 AM ON 05/24/09

Well, this is the first time that I've ever heard of Goodkin and The Sword of Truth but I am absolutely glad that I stumbled upon this show. I think it's amazing! I love to read and I've learned a long time ago never to compare the books of comic books to a movie or TV show remake.

Regardless, it's one of the best shows on TV since Zena. I'd stop watching TV after SG1 ended but this actioned packed, fast paced, heart racing show has me waiting with anticipation for the next season.

By mlbm1970 at 7:19 PM ON 05/24/09

I have become a big fan of the tv series and i love it because i know to not compare it with the books I also love. Can somebody tell me if the series is coming back next fall? I'm been looking on the news and fall schedules for the networks Iand I can't find anything, anybody? please let me know, thank you.

By trevorman at 5:09 PM ON 01/26/10

I agree it should have at least been a showtime show or on hbo. it definately lacks the darker themes of the book, it is a very adult fantasy. there is no way they will be able to portray what richard went through with denna and the mord sith. not on public tv haha as well as most of the book
