Marvel to enlist screenwriters to help develop new superhero films

Marvel to enlist screenwriters to help develop new superhero films

With more than 5,000 crime fighters and villains in its library, Marvel Entertainment is assembling a group of screenwriters who will pen scripts for various properties Marvel wants to develop, Variety reported.

The writers' group will be similar to that created by the fellowship program the Walt Disney Co. has been running since 1990. That group enlists a dozen writers to work with creative executives to develop films for the studio and TV shows for ABC, the Disney Channel and ABC Family.

Marvel will invite up to five writers each year to work on specific projects, a source familiar with the deal told the trade paper. Those could include staffers behind Marvel's comic books.

The company will provide the specific pitches it wants the writers to tackle. Those could involve certain plot points for movies already in development or characters it would like to see on its future film slate.

Good. Maybe we'll actually see some quality hero movies then that don't stink. Seriously, were any of the people who made these recent hero flicks comic book fans as kids?!? I think not. Otherwise the films might be good. They need to shut down spider-man, wait a couple years, and then remake it with people who actually care. I mean seriously, it can't be that hard to write a good script.....ITS ALREADY WRITTEN...WITH THOUSANDs OF COMIC BOOKs already printed WITH GOOD PLOTS...HMMM...WOW....GOOD IDEA.

I would love to see a story with Cloak and Dagger. That would make a great movie.

Oh, the possibilities!

We need a Moon Knight movie, how great would that be. And if they can make a movie about lame ass Jonah Hex (yes i know its a different company) then theres got to be room for Marc Spector.

Sweet Christmas!!! I hope this means we'll get a decent Luke Cage pic (guest starring Iron Fist, of course).

wow, I guess my standards are too low cause I actually think some of the recent stuff has been pretty darn good. Iron Man was phenomenal and followed the original as best it could considering it was written in the 60's. Hulk was just dark enough to please my taste. And why are the Spidey films not up to snuff? I guess after decades of nothing but crap I'll take what we're gettin now over the old Cap America on a bike and Lou Ferigno's constipated face.

I'd like to see more cosmic stuff myself...whatever happened to the Silver Surfer spinoff talk?

OMG! Does this mean we might actually get to see a Jubilee movie!?!?

Yes I am kidding; still the potential for something cool is here. After all who would have thought that Blade would have been such a great movie? I think this is a very wise move on behalf of the Marvel pep's.

ooohhh..... Adam Warlock!

By jtalker1965 at 8:52 AM ON 04/07/09

After lookinh at some of the "hero's" posted only the comic book geeks would pick these. Go out and ask 10 people on the street who Luke Cage is or Iron Fist is, Cloak and Dager very lame hero's. Moon Night, Adam Warlock?
A base needs to be set and then build from there. Captian America should have been done years ago. Ironman was right on the money. Fantastic 4 screwed the pouch on the last movie trying to be fan friendly. Spidey 3 stunk. Blade 1 and 2 good 3 lost direction after the first 15 minutes.

I agree with Eldon, I think a Cloak & Dagger film could be a great movie. Keep it as a drama, and easy on the super-hero stuff. It's got drugs, darkness & light, the hunger inside us all, class divisions (he's poor & she's rich).

If Cloak & Dagger is really in the works, then it's going to take someone like J.J. Abrams or Steven Spielberg to write and produce it. Otherwise it'll be an epic fail!

You saw what happened to Ghost Rider. That movie should have been scarier than 30 Days of Night.
