Despite generally positive reviews, with some calling the project the most original new drama of the season, NBC's Kings debuted Sunday as the lowest-rated program between 8 p.m. and 11 on a major broadcast network, The Hollywood Reporter's Live Feed blog reported.
The show drew 6 million viewers and earned a 1.6 preliminary rating among adults 18-49. The show's two-hour debut was on par with this season's other bottom-of-the-barrel premieres, like last week's reality show Chopping Block and former Friday night adventure Crusoe.

I think the previews for this series really did it a disservice. After being inundated with those previews, my perspective on this show was completely different from what I actually watched last night. From the previews, I thought it would be some kind of a "Wall Street" the movie-in-a-TV series-format show, which it definitely was not.
Only after researching a little bit of the synopsis online did I actually decide to DVR the show. I'm glad I did, because it was much better than I'd expected. The show is set in a fictional kingdom and it hews loosely to biblical mythos, which I find interesting. There are elements of the fantastical in this show that are also intriguing. I'm invested in it now, but now I'm worried that the rug will be pulled out from under me by the network (a la Whedon-style) if the numbers don't improve.

Wow! I was suprised at how much I enjoyed this show. I pretty much thought it was going to be some sucky soap opera, but I got sucked in and now can't wait to see where it goes.

I was definitely kept interested throughout the program last night. I'm not sure I'm fully attached to it yet, but I do plan to watch for the next few weeks and see how it goes (unless of course they cancel it ...).
For me the most intriguing part is watching how the Biblical basis of the story is worked in - what is changed, what is kept the same, what parts of the story will be left out, etc.

I was pleasantly surprised by this show and I didn't even notice that it was two hours long. I agree that it was marketed poorly and it would benefit from running before or after Heroes. However, its unlikely that this show will survive in a world where the ratings show low-cost crap is more popular than innovative programming.
By doorQdotCom at 2:52 PM ON 03/16/09
Damn. I was hoping the show would do well. It was well written, conceived and acted. We could start a dead pool, wondering how many episodes air (two? three?) before NBC kills it outright.
By Kevin at 2:55 PM ON 03/16/09
Just goes to show you that the networks have no business with shows of any quality. They should stick with "Wrestling with the Stars" are leave quality to cable. (excluding SyFy, of course).
By cs at 3:08 PM ON 03/16/09
I was pleased with the show as well. Aside from the great acting and interesting plot, it was DIFFERENT. Seems everything else is a mess of remakes, sequels, and piss-poor nonsense these days, so it's refreshing to see something unique come up.
Unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled it. It's frustrating when great shows like Firefly, Surface, and Jerico get dropped, only to be replaced by yet another reality show or done-to-death sitcoms.
The only complaint I have about this show is the lack of a backstory. One can sort of assume what happened, but it feels a lot like starting a book from the middle. Is this a post-war America? Is it somewhere in Europe? Did we have a WW III? Huh?
I'm also hoping for more Biblical stuff. It seems to be heading towards the book of Revelation. If so, this show's really going to kick butt!
I'll say it again, Captcha SUCKS!
There's other systems like this out there, and very few of them are this bad. It should NOT take two, three, or eight tries, you knuckleheads! I hope this costs you dearly in bandwidth fees, because that's the only way you'll fix it! So FIX IT!

I was pleased to see the OT story of David retold in modern terms and in a way that was accessable to modern audiences... I too hope it continues!
By Justo at 3:42 PM ON 03/16/09
That blows, I loved it. Best network show I've seen in a while, since probably LOST's premiere. Hope it improves, maybe they just need a better time slot. Sunday night is an odd night.

Once I got past the "Why are the hostages right there across no-man's-land?" I really enjoyed Kings. It is visually very stunning and very well written. If you haven't watched it, give it a try.
Yeah, I know, 'visually stunning' and 'well written', two kisses of death. And Sunday night (?), maybe not the best premiere choice. But then again with Idol out there brain-washing the masses, what other choice did they have?
Anyway, as I put away my soapbox, give this show a chance, I have a feeling we won't be disappointed.

"Once I got past the "Why are the hostages right there across no-man's-land?" I really enjoyed Kings.
Really? I couldn't get past this. It was beyond ridculous. Considering the entire premise of the show is based on this single act of heroism you' think they could have come up with something far more creative, clever, and dare I say, "believable."

shoots.... i loved it and i sure hope they dont take it off the air
By Eldon at 6:25 PM ON 03/16/09
Absolutely loved it. Well acted and well written. I loved the layers of subplot, intrigue and character development; something that has definitely been missing from television for a long time. As a premiere episode, they set the stage for a great run.
As much as I know the original story well enough, I really hope this goes further. I would love to see what develops.

The show lost me 15 minutes into it. I watched the whole thing (out of the corner of my eye) but did not find it in the least bit intriguing. Totally boring.
By KINGS BLOWS at 9:55 PM ON 03/16/09
The promos did not make the premise of the show clear at all, and after I found out what it was about I couldn't care less.
By duneboat at 11:07 PM ON 03/16/09
show may be indeed worth watching. I also would like to know more background history.they mentioned years as in AD. they mention god, but no son of god. i do unfortunately get the feeling it will go the way of the best new show from last year from nbc. journeyman.
By Reallyaright at 1:00 AM ON 03/17/09
The story premise could actually work if the writers were just more attentive to the original material. It looks like NBC has chosen to give the biblical account the same treatment that they gave to Battlestar Galactica. Keep the names, flush the story line and “reboot the franchise”. Hey guys, God doesn’t need your help to rebrand the Bible.
By svrkev at 1:21 AM ON 03/17/09
I thought the first episode was perfect....while watching it though..I kept thinking to myself it's not going to last...it needs to be on HBO or Showtime...it is betters than heroes though...WAY better
By Gill Avila at 3:09 AM ON 03/17/09
I'd like to know just when did that world branch off from this one, as there must be some common history as Franz Liszt was mentioned when David was playing the piano.
By JezuitX at 4:07 AM ON 03/17/09
I think it suffered by being two hours long. This is a new show that no one knows about and that's a big chunk of time to devote to an unknown series. Shows like Lost or 24 can do two hour blocks, but new series should shy away from it.
Aside from that I think the show has some promise. I really enjoyed the characterization, the cinematography, and I think a retelling of the story of David in modern times is just a really neat premise. I hope this show comes out stronger next week, because I really would love to see where this all goes.
By baron_elric at 11:25 AM ON 03/17/09
Sorry to see the numbers were so low. My wife and I watched it out of curiosity, and were very pleasantly surprised. We always expect good things from Ian McShane (the major reason we gave the show a chance), but having good scripting and a strong cast to back him up was more than we had hoped for. We're definitely going to keep watching. Well, for as long as it is on the air.
By Kyle Nin at 11:39 AM ON 03/17/09
The world of "Kings" takes place in an alternate reality, not connected to ours in any way. It would be like trying to fit "Lord of the Rings" into our reality. It's a completely fictional universe.
I think that's one of the things that intrigues me most about this new series. That and the supernatural touch (the butterflies).
By sirona7 at 12:04 PM ON 03/17/09
I thought the premiere was very well done. Watched it for Ian MacShane, will continue to watch it for IM, but also for the poetic storytelling and the sumptuous production values.
By Pablo R at 12:29 PM ON 03/17/09
I really liked it. I hope it finds enough of an audience to hang around.
By McTex at 1:30 PM ON 03/17/09
I was very surprised at how much I loved the show. I DVR'd it because Sunday night is Simpsons, Family Guy and American Dad for me. I wonder how many other people did the same?
The writing was excellent as were the sets and effects. I also liked that I wasn't overly familiar with the actors, who all did a great job. Let's pray this show has legs.
Of course the best part was the retelling of the story of David and it was smartly done.
By Maltheus at 2:13 PM ON 03/17/09
That's what happens when you air a new show halfway through March. Not sure what they were thinking on that one. I loved it though. Nice alternative to the typical cop, doctor lawyer shows out there. It's definitely the best thing on NBC right now (even if that's not saying too much).
By tati at 2:36 PM ON 03/17/09
Wasn't able to catch it when it aired but it's queued up in Hulu for me to watch this week. I'm looking forward to it!
By ether at 9:46 AM ON 03/18/09
I think one reason for it's low number of watchers was simply this: I hadn't heard about the series until the day the premiere was being aired. I'm sure if somehow more people heard about it they would have tuned in, but unfortunately the DVR renders commercials and ads a think of the past for the most part.
That and possibly sensory overload.

Got to view the first 20 minutes at Comic Con last summer and this show stunned the audience. We were floored that a network could put out such good material. I mean, c'mon - it ain't HBO -- can you believe it? We couldn't. After watching the first three episodes now, seven months later, we remain enchanted. Sunday nights might work out, at least they didn't put it on Fridays. But NBC needs to put the word out on this one - they have a winner - let's just hope they don't do a FOX on us (re:Firefly).
By Becky at 10:53 PM ON 03/30/09
I was very pleased with it......a few corny parts, but easily forgivable. I hope the network doesn't yank it yet. It needs a chance.
Does anyone think David in this series looks like Heath Ledger?
By Junior at 5:43 PM ON 04/06/09
I have to disagree with some of you guys on some points. NBC's decision to premiere the show on sunday was bad. They did promote the show on tv commerical's and in print ads. What killed the ratings was because of DVR's. What's ironic is that more than 6 million people viewed the two hour premiere. I was so impress with the production quality, acting and writing. I hope this show gets a chance to mature.
By PA1958 at 1:40 AM ON 04/12/09
I love this show. its is the first show on a major network that makes you think in years. i think it just goes over people who watch nbc's heads. it is such a grate show. but sadly it will die so that people could watch C!#p. I saw that Si Fi was airing re runs maybe they will pick it up. idk how good it would be then, i feel like its the kind of show that you need allot of money to make.

This is definitely one of the best new shows out there. Not everybody agrees, but that's OK. It's intelligent, well-written, well-acted, innovative and visually stunning. I really hope that NBC doesn't destroy it over a weak premiere.
This seems to be how networks operate these days. If a show isn't a blockbuster in the first ten minutes, they abandon it. These days, with Hulu and DVR, people can watch shows out of their normal time slots, and lost of shows take time to build a good following. They need to air it across from some of the more insipid shows out there and capture people who are interested in quality weekday programming. Stick it on Wednesdays or Thursdays, promote it well and I promise people will watch.
