Fingers crossed that the movie will be as good as the trailer, and not just another Cloverfield!

By iclairewillis at 10:54 PM ON 03/23/09

I guess my problem is that I don't want to forget everything I know-and love-about Star Trek. If this can live up to what came before it, then I shouldn't have to.

If they keep up with these weekly trailers and pics there won't be any need to go see the damn thing.

By scifi-ED at 2:43 AM ON 03/24/09

Am I the only one that felt like I was punched in the mouth and told to like the new Star Trek or else? I don't want to forget everything. I was on board for this movie, thinking I was going to get back story, not a new story. DOUBT IS CREEPING IN.

By Requiem1971 at 3:09 AM ON 03/24/09

Ever wonder what it would be like if you'd chosen option A instead of B. Well, we've been shown the history of Star Trek through option A. Option B will travel along the line as A but will have a new twist and will be different. I wonder if Kirk will be killed aboard Enterprise B in this new time line.

Not as good as Doctor Who

By DarkHawke at 6:49 AM ON 03/24/09

Before the predictable tide of hayta comments surges over this talkback, consider that if you can't hold your judgment till after you've seen the movie (if you'll even deign to see it; been there, done that), whatever Abrams & Co. trot out on May 8th won't destroy or invalidate ANY version of Star Trek that you enjoy, love or by which you live your life. By all accounts, this is a non-destructive reboot, kind of like the Marvel Comics "Ultimate" universe, where the characters and circumstances of the classic heroes are remade for a new generation without in the slightest affecting the existing continuity. If it doesn't hold perfectly to canon, at least should hew close to the spirit of the Original Star Trek. Even if it doesn't, if I can deal with 18 years of Next Gen, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise, y'all can handle one little movie.

By Giavs at 7:32 AM ON 03/24/09

I said it before and I'll say it again....baddies coming back thru time and writting history...for the sake of rebooting classic material for a new generation...BLOWS! Enough with the temporal changes so that new story lines can be done.

By Bluesman at 2:02 PM ON 03/24/09

For some strange reason Americans take Science Fiction WAY too seriously. If things don't match your vision of what you think it should be, you throw a temper tantrum. As a fellow American, all I can say is GET OVER IT!!!

Science Fiction by its very nature requires a suspension of belief and a certain irreverence to be thoroughly enjoyable. Time to grow up Fan Boys!

Dude, restrain that inner geek. It's only a movie.

buuuujah :)

By Bobanort at 5:14 PM ON 03/24/09

So how many Doctor Who films have they made recently? And that sappy ending for "The Stolen Earth"?? Come on!! I grew up a "Whovian", but I gotta go with I-Trek (look at the new enterprise and you'll get it) of the new Dr. Who.

By Captain Jack Harkness at 7:46 PM ON 03/24/09

You will enjoy New Coke, I mean New Trek. Resistance is futile. Enjoy your movie!

("Not as good as Doctor Who." Right on!) Sorry, trying to stay positive. Enjoy the film. You will be assimilated. Enjoy the movie more than once - tell your friends!

By Locke at 8:51 PM ON 03/24/09

So, according to Captain Jack, Star Trek isn't a TV and movie franchise and creative endeavor, it's a brand just like Coke. It's a brand that isn't allowed to ever try anything new and if it ever does it should abandon that new idea as quickly as possible and return to the same tired formula. It should follow that same tired formula forever and ever...Also the fans of the Star Trek brand should abandon it for ever trying anything new.

By Spaceman Spiff at 11:58 PM ON 03/24/09

Forget--everything--you--know

Yup; Cause KING JJ is gonna make it better and shinier for ya! Forget about all those clunky old starships, which we could have used the same way they were used in the Trek episodes with the referbished CGI effects and made them look really awsome for the big screen. But why do that when we can make them BETTER and flashier for all the new Trek fans this movie is going to suc-uh gather in?

What's that? You old Trek fans don't want newer and flashyer? Weeeell you'll get used to it. You might as well anyway

By Locke at 1:31 AM ON 03/25/09

So according to Spaceman Spiff, "old" fans of Star Trek aren't allowed to want to see a vision of Star Trek other than Gene Roddenberry, Ronald Moore, Brannon Braga, and Rick Berman. No one else is allowed to play in the the sand box. I've been a Star Trek since I was a little older than 6, and I can't wait to see the new vision.

By Rob at 4:00 PM ON 03/25/09

I can put a sticker that says Porche on my Trans Am, but that still won't make it a Porche.

By Captain Jack Harkness at 4:27 PM ON 03/25/09

Locke, I'm not looking for an argument, but of course Star Trek is a brand! Do you have any idea the amount of crap I've seen thru the years on store shelves with the words ST/STTNG/STV, etc, etc, and the crew pictures on the packages, just to sell a crappy little plastic shooter, or film roller, or other plastic crap that falls apart in 10 minutes or less? Admit it, you've seen it too, we all have, and yes, that makes Trek a brand! So does McDonaldland glasses and happy meals, and comic books, and novels, and halloween costumes, and toys, and games, and things I can't even think of right now, let alone the series and movies. Yes, it is a brand (TM) - not trying to be a jerk here, just driving home the point because I know you're a reasonable guy and you accept facts, well, there they are.

Now, I'm not saying that as a brand, Trek should never try anything new. Far from it. When TNG started, I didn't warm up to it until the very end of the first season - figures, right? Just when I fell in love with Tasha she got killed. You wanna talk about mad? I said, "I'm done with this crap show! They killed Tasha! I'm Done!" So then I hear they're bringing on Whoopi Goldberg and I'm saying "yeah, I might try watching it somemore..." I watched it all the way to the end. Then DS-9 came along. From the start, they got all mystical with Sisko and the wormhole, that Jake would just be another Wesley (totally NOT) and I was thinking these guys were out of their minds and I thought I was going to hate that show -- before I knew how or when, I loved DS-9 and it's my favorite of ALL Treks of all time. Yes, even over TOS!

So no, you are not allowed to tell me that I am saying "It's a brand that isn't allowed to ever try anything new and if it ever does it should abandon that new idea as quickly as possible and return to the same tired formula. It should follow that same tired formula forever and ever...Also the fans of the Star Trek brand should abandon it for ever trying anything new." You may not put those words in my mouth. I didn't say that, I would not say that. Those words are not in compliance with what I DID just say, okay? I can accept change, I can accept change even if I don't like something in the beginning, I can accept it after a while, I can come around. Even in these Trek threads on this board, in the beginning, I just put the Abrams movie down and said to people "don't go see it, don't waste your money." Well, if you've bothered to notice, I don't do that anymore. I've realized people have the right to do as they like, as do I, and while I now might poke fun at the new movie, I tell people to go see it, enjoy it, tell their friends. But yeah, I poke fun at it while I'm doing it. 'Cause that is my right.

So no hard feelings, Locke. Go see the movie. Enjoy your New Coke.

Lock, don't put words in my mouth. I did not say that not even close. What I said was a small bit of satire. I realise there are plenty of old Trek fans who like this movie although it does astound me that they do. By all means if you want to hand over your hard earned money for Abrams revisionist version of Trek by all means go! enjoy!

The rest of us will mourn for what could have been.

By xadrian at 4:25 PM ON 03/26/09

Fan 1 - Did you see the new Trek trailer?

Fan 2 - Yeah, did you?

Fan 3 - Yup.

Fan 1 - And?

Fan 2 - I'm excited. I mean, I'm a Star Trek fan, but this looks exciting. You?

Fan 1 - Eh. I'm worried it's going to really screw up the whole idea of what Star Trek is. I'll go see it, say it was a good movie to some people and crap to other people. What about you.

Fan 3 - I won't see it. I like the old stuff and I just know I'll hate this so I'm not going to give JJ my $8.

Fan 1 - Fair enough.

Ok, it's been covered, can we talk about something else now?

By Spaceman Spiff at 7:17 PM ON 03/26/09

Well xadrian, since this is a Trek movie article, What else is theret Spaceman Spiffo talk about here?

By Spaceman Soiff at 7:20 PM ON 03/26/09

Well this is a Trek movie article. what else is there to talk about here?

By Spaceman Spiff at 7:28 PM ON 03/26/09

Sci-Fi has belonged to geeks for decades. Just because you normies are starting to see how brilliant it is does not mean you have to hate on us. Geeks like to analyze and over-analyze things, that's what we do. It's what keeps the industry fresh and exciting. We can't just turn it off because you guys don't approve of it.
