New writer tapped to revise Ron Moore's The Thing?

New writer tapped to revise Ron Moore\'s \<i\>The Thing\<\/i\>?

Bloody-Disgusting reported that writer Eric Heisserer has been hired to rewrite Ronald Moore's script for The Thing, a prequel film to John Carpenter's 1982 horror movie of the same name.

Without citing a source, the site reports that Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment have tapped Heisserer, whom the site earlier reported was also tapped to rewrite Wesley Strick's screenplay for the upcoming remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. is attached to direct The Thing, which follows scientists in the Antarctic as they are confronted by a shape-shifting alien who can assume the appearance of anyone.

A great move, hand a script by a genre favourite to some unknown. Not only do we not need a re-make of another classic but to rubbish a Ron Moore script (which would probably have been half decent) is another nail in the coffin. Universal I salute you! Or not rather.

By Kevin J at 2:10 PM ON 03/26/09

Is there some rule in Hollywood that a script must go through at least a set number of rewrites before it is filmed or is it my imagination? Is this a union thing? Somebody explain this weirdness to be because, honestly, how bad could the script Ronald Moore be to necessitate a rewrite?

By Tom at 2:40 PM ON 03/26/09

After the rubbish of the Battlestar Galactica finale, I'm not surprised that the studio would ask for a second opinion on a Ron Moore script.

The alien shape-shifter turns out to be Starbuck, right? Wonder where she got to.

By Daniel at 2:50 PM ON 03/26/09

Tom - if you thought that the BSG finale was rubbish - then my friend you are without soul and heart. That was the perfect ending to a wonderful show.

By TheDocToRx at 3:51 PM ON 03/26/09

The BSFG ending was pure CRAP! And I do have a soul, and a brain!! It was a wonderful Soap Opera in Space that had an ending that made no sence!? She was an angel, GTF outta here. What a writers cop out man! Watch B5, now that is some storytelling!!

By Shub Niggurath at 4:16 PM ON 03/26/09

It doesnt NEED a prequel or a sequel or anything. It is a film that works perfectly without any extra rubbish - besides, what more can they do ? we know what the thing is capable of and how it works, it wouldnt have the horror or effect it had that the original had. It would just be a pointless retread.

Oh and itll probably have craploads of tacky CGI, making it look unrealistic - the 80's one rocked because the effects were realistic and prosphetics/models not video-game graphjcs.

By Jobus_Rum at 5:13 PM ON 03/26/09

^^Agreed.^^ The 80s feature was a stand-alone workd of art that defined a genre and took the craft of horror movie-making to new heights. Why cheapen the film and experience with a sub-par rehash?

By CFE at 7:50 PM ON 03/26/09

The BSG Finale was absolute GARBAGE - and I WAS a long time fan of the show. I can totally see why the studio executives would want to make sure that they're actually making a SCIENCE FICTION MOVIE and NOT A "TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL" Retread!

By AdmNaismith at 7:53 PM ON 03/26/09

They want to throw out Moore's prequel material. The concept is too cerebral.

Agreed, CG will ruin whatever is filmed.

By Brady1541 at 8:31 PM ON 03/26/09

I agree with AdmNaismith. Moore's prequel for 'The Thing' was, most likely, 'above' the heads of the audience, just as his Battlestar Galactica finale was also 'above' most of its audience.

Hence, the Babylon 5 worshippers come out of the closet attempting to revive a crappy show that never stood a chance beyond the fanboys.

By Kevin J at 10:43 PM ON 03/26/09

Saying that a show shouldn't be made because it is "too-far-over-the-general-viewing-public's-heads" is the weakest argument ever. A strong show will find a following, and saying a show is 'too smart' is looking down on a majority of the TV or Movie viewers out there. American TV viewers have had their TV watered down for so long, it takes awhile for a good show to catch on. It is just cheaper for studios to throw another American idol on the fire rather than properly promote and support quality program. If you look at say a show like 'Firefly', it was never given a chance to get a foothold before it was canceled. Love it or hate it, shows like Firefly and BSG will be discussed and purchased on DVD long after anyone remembers who won Dancing with the Stars or American Idol.

As Palmer would've put it--"You gotta be f****n' kidding." A prequel? When would it be set? 100,000 years ago on the alien ship before it crashed? We all know how the prequel ends--we saw it as the beginning of 1982's The Thing. Would the prequel end where The Thing begins? Why not edit the two together so you can have a 5-hour DVD? Jeez--why not set a sequel that takes place AFTER Childs and MacReady get rescued?

By Muldfeld at 5:29 AM ON 03/27/09

Unless Ron Moore is attached to this, I'm not interested. Sure, the BSG finale had problems, but none of the ones to which typical sci fi fans refer. B5 was one of the worst pieces of garbage I've ever seen, except Londo and G'Kar's dynamic and its political commentary. Terrible dialogue and not dramatically realistic at all.

I thought the idea of Starbuck having been dead and not a life to lead in happy contentment because she actually is on borrowed time gives her death in Season 3 a significance it might not have had and her inability to be with Lee so tragic and beautiful. She's a Jesus Christ figure, in a way.

What I did find a problem was the serious lack of political commentary in 4.5, a tiny role for Lee Adama, and too much focus on the damn ship. However, Roslin's death and so much of the drama was given the most delicate of touches. Baltar and Six's stuff was so gorgeous! The flashbacks were the best part.

Anyway, from "Virtuality" to "The Thing", it just goes to show that Ron Moore's originality and gutsiness, which are akin to those of the great Ira Steven Behr, have a hard time finding a home. This is all the more reason Ron should stay closely involved in writing for Caprica!

By El4short at 12:07 PM ON 03/27/09

I cannot believe the people above who hated the BSG finale. Battlestar has always been about the characters more so than the plot. The finale was totally consistent with the show, and as a 6-year fan I thought it was outstanding.

By Anim8 at 12:25 PM ON 03/27/09

This is blasphemy. There is no need to rewrite this movie AGAIN!!!

This will be another crap remake like The Day The Earth Stood Still.

By Where's my Remote at 2:45 PM ON 03/27/09

This just confirms my opinion that all imagination has died in Hollywood. Not a single one of them can come up with an original idea.

I don't need a prequel to The Thing or a reboot or anything for that matter. The Original did it all.

I'm surprised someone out there hasnt done a Alien reboot yet. Please stop the insanity soon.
