Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood reports that Mickey Rourke has signed a deal to appear in Iron Man 2, apparently ringing the bell on the ongoing wrestling match between him and Marvel.
The site reports that Rourke signed on for the role of the Russian villain in the sequel after at first being low-balled by the studio to the tune of $250,000; the star's salary is reportedly significantly higher.
Variety reported that Rourke will play a character called Whiplash, which includes elements from that comic-book villain and Crimson Dynamo, another Russian baddie.
The site adds that Sony was considering hiring Rourke to play the villain in Spider-Man 4.
Rourke happens to be in Russia this week promoting Fox Searchlight's The Wrestler, and Finke reports that he'll start researching his new role immediately there.

Oh, yay, a trendy actor to play the part of a villain! The only thing that will make me happier is seeing Shellhead kick the crap out of this flash-in-the-pan actor. BTW, the Wrestler sucked ass!!! And I still hate Tomei and Rourke
By Muldfeld at 2:23 AM ON 03/12/09
I felt sorry for him based on his recent interviews with people like Charlie Rose, but, after he recently defended that bastard George W. Bush, saying, "George is doing a hell of a job during very difficult times, more power to him. Screw all them people who don't like him", Mr. Rourke can go screw himself. I don't care that he was great in "The Wrestler", his politics suck and he can go to hell for them.
By Talic at 6:42 AM ON 03/12/09
Yeah, Muldfeld you tell them. God forbid we have an actor that doesn't blindly parrot the talking points of the liberal establishment in Hollywood like Alec Baldwin or Marc Maron. Your a tool!
By IsoTek at 6:49 AM ON 03/12/09
Personally I hope he does well. Mickey may not have been the sharpest tool in the shed but his sins are no worse than any other actors. For cryin out loud Ironman is being played by a former coke fiend that probably would be dead if someone hadn't been good to him. Cut the guy some slack. Oh and about hating him over his politics....Well, insn't that an evolved liberal viewpoint....I love it when progressives show their intollerance.
By Yale at 6:54 AM ON 03/12/09
I think Mickey will do good. I hope he does. I hate the negativity on this board, I don't care about his politics, I care about whether he will do good in the movie or not. I believe he will.
By Muldfeldisatool at 7:01 AM ON 03/12/09
@muldfeld, you hate Rourke because he defended Bush. Its A-holes like you that make people like me love watching how douchebag liberals (like you) show how intollerant the left is. Maybe you can get together with the DailyKOS and pick on Sarah Palin's menally handicapped baby.
By ASfda at 7:06 AM ON 03/12/09
I think Rourke is a hell of a human being. Politcs aside I hope he does well and can be the best he can be. People can be so petty sometimes.
By Baldric at 7:12 AM ON 03/12/09
Amen Asfda. Its amazing how many people want others to fail just because they voted for someone they don't like. I think that is a special breed of pettyness that makes the hater a internally soiled person. There is no reason Mickey should be cast aside because of his political beliefs, especially if Hollywood is as compassionate and tollerant as they let people believe.
By cologeek at 9:15 AM ON 03/12/09
Politics aside, they're combining Whiplash and the Crimson Dynamo? How's that going to work?
By Imagica at 9:50 AM ON 03/12/09
An actor's politics should not matter if he does good movies or not. No I do not agree with Rourke's opinion of Bush but this is America and he has the right to believe what he believes. Something called Freedom of Speech so don't bash him because he likes Bush.
Rourke has chosen a lot of decent roles lately. I have not seen the Wrestler yet, but I hear it is a pretty good depiction of the industry. I know a few guys working in the indy scene, they say it shows a lot what is done behind the scenes well some things not.
Regardless Rourke plays heavies well and I am curious that they combined Crimson and Whiplash together what we are going to be seeing on screen.

@Mudfeld
Shut the hell up. You make intelligent liberals like me look bad. A persons politics should play no role in how much you like them as a person or an actor.
@Talic, IsoTek and Muldfeldisatool
Don't generalize based on that idiots point of view. It shows YOUR ignorance and intolerance.
@Everyone
Stop flaming about politics. We can disagree and still have our own viewpoints. I'm as liberal as they come and my best friend is more conservative than Rush Limbaugh. What do we have in common? We love all things geek. THAT is the only thing that should be on this message board.

Angry Robot,
Thank you so much for saying what needs to be said.
By Muldfeld at 3:08 PM ON 03/12/09
First off, Rourke beat his wife. Second, he was a dick and that's why Hollywood turned its back on him. Third, I was willing to understand that he had changed because he had been through therapy and seemed genuinely contrite. However, he basically said that those who criticized Bush should shut up. He wasn't respecting freedom of speech. Bush is the worst president ever and his crimes are eggregious and many. I don't think you would like to be told by Rourke that you shouldn't criticize Bush if you were a victim of Katrina or Iraq or Afghanistan or a French person who faced racism when Bush and the GOP didn't like France for opposing their bone-headed decision to go to war, or had been tortured at his discretion. Let's not forget the millions in America who Bush left to die in poor conditions and environmental violations that has damaged lives; for example he has paved the way for mountain top mining that pollutes water in the Appalachians and poor people there are exposed to black drinking water.
Rourke got a second chance; Bush has gotten plenty of chances to reverse course, but somehow Rourke doesn't have the decency to care enough about the suffering of others to allow them to do the very least, which Bush deserves -- to be criticized.
On a personal level, I would like it if Rourke goes back into poverty because he hasn't really changed his stripes. He wants compassion, he should show some to those millions, if not billions, who've suffered under this man.
By Muldfeld at 3:12 PM ON 03/12/09
I think he's a great actor, but do I think he deserves his fame if he's going to act like this? No, not when there are plenty of equally good actors who wouldn't deny others rights. Rourke used his celebrity to coerce others and brought politics into it.
By bobanort at 4:49 PM ON 03/12/09
Quote of mudfeld: "I don't care that he was great in "The Wrestler", his politics suck and he can go to hell for them."
Another Quote of Mudfeld: "I think he's a great actor, but do I think he deserves his fame if he's going to act like this?"
Since we can't discuss his being cast and have to listen to your rant . . . could you at least pick a direction and go with it? You're the one that brought politics into this and all most of us wanted was to discuss Mickey Rourke being cast in IM2. Id probably care about your rant if "Mickey Rourke" was a character in the Iron Man comic, but he isn't and I really don't care what the particulars of each actor/actresses political ideals are. I go to a movie to be entertained . . and usually to forget the troubles of the real world for 90 to 240 minutes.
What I'd really like to know is if you're gonna stand up in the theatre before the movie starts and tell everyone who are trying to watch the previews what an S.O.B. Mickey Rourke is (in your opinion, of course) and force them to listen to the same drivel you spout here? Obama won and he's started doing everything he promised during the campaign. So what do you want of Rourke? Should we tar and feather him and run him out of the country? Should make anyone who supports a political ideology you don't like a second class citizen? Sounds like you're exactly like the picture you're painting of Mickey Rourke.
By Talic at 9:48 PM ON 03/12/09
@Muldfeld: Your political opinons aside you fail to show any more tollerance than you accuse Rourke of not having. Not a winning arguement.
@Angry Robot: I'm not worried about showing MY intollerance, I don't belong to a party that uses it as a political cudgel to bash others with when we want to make ourselves look superior. The point I was making is here is another (supposedly tollerant) liberal (muldfeld) on his high horse about Bush and showing how intollerant they can be. I stand by what I said. Don't like it, tuff. Not everyone is interested in the brand of peace and love you try to ram down everyone elses throats.
By IsoTek at 10:05 PM ON 03/12/09

Oh so now its about his past sins and not just his politics. Well why didn't you say so, we all know that those types of people never should be given a second chance. He told people to shut up. Oh my, I guess its okay when people like Garafalo and Maher do it but don't let anyone other than a liberal do it or its them taking our rights away. Last I looked Muldfeld it didn't stop you from criticizing him, so what right did he take away from you. Look at youself, trying to justify an attack on ones character with indictments against a politican. Risky and foolish maneuver but you are welcome to make it. From the looks of it most people think you are ridiculous for making the arguement.
By Boyrivet at 12:26 AM ON 03/13/09
@muldfeld: So let me get this straight. Mickey is bad because he supports Bush. You and the rest of the Hollywood liberals are good because you hate Bush and support people like Obama, who cannot fill positions in the treasury dept. Who lets tax evaders like Geithner, Daschle fill top spots in government. Who has recieved a failing grade from economists. Who broke his promise about not passing bills with earmarks. Who broke his promise about not passing bills for 5 days so that the public can comment. Who is currently allowing Nancy Pelosi to use the airforce as her personal air command costing the taxpayers millions in unnecessary changes in the use of airplanes for personal travel. All this and quite possibly more in the future and we are supposed to only hate Bush. This is problem with political ideologues such as yourself they blind themselves to the failings within while they rail and rant on the failings of the other party. A wise man/woman once said "The lady doth protest too much, methinks."

"French person who faced racism when Bush and the GOP didn't like France for opposing their bone-headed decision to go to war, or had been tortured at his discretion. "
You gotta be kidding right. First off, the French stepped into that themselves because they didn't want to attack a nation that they can do business with and profit from when others are being killed. Just like when we were legally trying to get reparations for the victims of PanAm 103 from Libya. After months of work and finally reaching a settlement the French wouldn't testify on our behalf and allow the payments to go through until the Libyians agreed to renegotiate the pay the families of some french airliner some of their terrorists destroyed. THEY FREEKIN PARLAYED WITH DEAD AMERICANS FOR THEIR GAIN. Bush didn't do anything to the French, he merely let them go their way and let public opinon take over. Nevermind they are a NATO ally and not reliable in Afgahnistan. Nevermind they were protecting Saddam so they could do business with him and build him another reactor while he killed Kurds and Kuwaitis. Now you go and accuse him of Torturing the French.....Where, When, I don't believe you. There would have been an international outry if he tortured French people. Mickey is gonna be just fine and I predict he will get even more work in the future.
