Ridley Scott, who is developing a film version of Joe Haldeman's seminal SF war novel The Forever War, told reporters in Britain that James Cameron's Avatar is inspiring him to shoot War in 3-D, according to SlashFilm.
"I'm filming a book by Joe Haldeman called Forever War," Scott reportedly said. "I've got a good writer doing it. I've seen some of James Cameron's work, and I've got to go 3-D. It's going to be phenomenal."
First published in 1974, The Forever War chronicles the interstellar war between humanity and the enigmatic Tauran species.

Oh, please, make this movie at least as good as the book.
Let's not have any of those "coming right at you for sake of 3-D" shoots.
And most importantly, don't mess this up like they did "Starship Troopers."

This movie better have the Mobile Suits.
They were one of the most disappointing omissions in Starship Troopers. (One of of many disappointments to Heinlein fans.)
And Haldeman has many times said that his bug war is the same as Heinlein's

Yeah, I wonder what Scott will do about all of the Forever War soldiers taking pills to make themselves gay? Yeah, can't imagine Hollywood serving up a military movie where all soldiers are having hot gay love.

Personally, as someone that wears glasses, I hate 3-D movies. Putting those little paper 3D glasses over/under my normal glasses just gives me a headache.
I know some theaters have the better 3D glasses, but I still can't wear them with my regular glasses and a blurry movie isn't going to cut it.
On a side note, I would rather see Old Man's War, The Ghost Brigade and The Last Colony (which I haven't read yet) made into movies, but Forever War was a great read as well.

Don;t fret about the glasses, this film will have the good ones. YOu wont even know your wearing them. James Cameron is doing for film with the new 3d what color did for film decades ago. It's going to be amazing.
As for doing the book, justice, I am going to give Ridley Scott the benefit of the doubt. He did Phillip Dick's novel justice with Bladerunner, I think he'll do fine with this one. I cannot wait!!!!!!!

Now THAT's what I'm talking about! First class sci-fi from first rank authors being made into movies by first rank directors! I wish SciFi channel would keep this in mind next time they try to make another lame, third-rate, Saturday night flop about giant snakes that ate Manhattan...

It's a simple premise: A prolonged interstellar war without FTL carries a soldier into future eras, increasingly strange in technology and, more importantly, society; the only constant is the farcically brief armed engagements.
The movie would be unusual in its casting and production design, inasmuch as the viewpoint character is the only constant. The supporting cast, sets and props for each successive future era would need to be different. And if they dropped the power armors, it wouldn't be a fatal change; in the novel, they're a tool to demonstrate technological advances (although the auto-amputating armor is deliciously creepy).
At least one future social change might be squicky for audiences (or so the studio execs will fear), i.e.: A future world government reduces population pressure by encouraging homosexuality, so the heterosexual soldiers from the past are the odd ones. And the war's conclusion (there will only be peace when we become like our adversaries) is a bit of a downer -- but on a personal level, there's the retirement world of traditional singleton people.
Hey, that's the hardcover edition I own!

I am definitely looking forward to this, as a young sci-fi novel geek this was one of my earliest ones. I have read it over 10 times over the years. I am concerned that they might change too much, to make it more "palatable" to general audiences.
As has been mentioned, the part where he comes back and finds that straight people are the "queer" ones. Its a very important part of the book, it attempts to make the reader see the other side.
There is a lot of social commentary in this book that would seriously degrade the integrity of the store if it is removed, but might be a tough sell to the general movie going audience. Given what happened with Watchmen, I am concerned Hollywood won't be willing to let the story be told the way it should.
Well, lets keep our fingers crossed.

I hope they don't screw this one up. It's on my top 5 sci-fi novel list. Ridley Scott is a good start. 3D is great too but it makes getting the DVD such a let down. Red and green glasses aren't worth it, and they can't seem to get the polarized glasses to work with our TVs. In any case, it'll be great to see a sci-fi flick that actually takes relativity into account.

I'm excited to see if they can pull this off. I think that the military sci-fi genre gets too little love from the film industry and a classic like the Forever War is a perfect way to change that. I do like the Starship Troopers movie, its a guilty pleasure of trashy sci-fi goodness I first saw when I was in elementary school. I think that any of John Scalzi's books would be great movies, Old Man's War is one of my favorite books ever.
By horus_lupercal at 8:54 PM ON 03/30/09
Oh and now that I think about it John Ringo's work would be great movie material. The Legacy of Aldenata would make an epic series, I would absolutely love to see that on the big screen. The Looking Glass series is also great sci-fi but it would best be adapted to a videogame. If you've never checked out either I highly recommend that you do.
By horus_lupercal at 8:57 PM ON 03/30/09
Ahhh! Sorry, one last thing. I think that the combat suits are essential to the movie. If you have to fight aliens, best to do so in style. Oh and I think some first person narrative pulled directly from the novel would be a good idea.

Meh...I would rather see John Steakly's "Armor" finally come to the screen.
I know there is much more to Forever War but the glaring bugaboo is the Homosexual subject matter that will or wil not be filmed. I felt Haldeman's use of "Homosexuality" as a means of population control a bit dysfunctional. If they had the power to alter one's sexuality then why not create more powerful contraceptives that create a temporary sterility or asexuality so that no one would be born. How would forcing people to adopt a new sexuality and all its behaviors a viable solution? Look at the result of the homosexuality enforcement in the novel, granted the population would remain down but humanity eventually had to rely on other means for procreation. Mandala himself didn't even try the sexual change, so was Haldeman, the model for Mandala really sympathetic to the gay? If they make the movie I think they should leave it out, other novels have touched on sex and scifi socieites much better, lets just stick to the war and the effects of the time dilation.

please do this one right. please, please, please.
By Plan at 6:42 AM ON 04/19/09
What's with people like IsoTek, who thinks homosexuality is a "bugaboo" in the novel when all it really is, is one method among many to make the main character seem like a fish out of water when he returns home after relative centuries fighting a war. FFS.

What? He was prophetic. It's happening right now.

Star ship troopers inspired my to join the Airborne in 1973. The movie misrepresented the the book. It was breathtakingly bad.
Joe Haldeman's Book was even better. Thank God Ridley Scott is going to be developing this project. I can hardly wait. He and Cameron are among the few in hollywood that take Science Fiction seriously.
