Seth Rogen admits Green Hornet will mix action, comedy

Seth Rogen admits \<i\>Green Hornet\<\/i\> will mix action, comedy

Seth Rogen, writer and co-star of the upcoming Green Hornet, told SCI FI Wire that the film will possess elements of both comedy and action.

"To me, the two aren't mutually exclusive," Rogen said in an interview last week in Los Angeles while promoting his upcoming 3-D animated movie Monsters vs. Aliens. "You can have a big action epic with a lot of funny parts."

Green Hornet is a big-screen adaptation of the superhero franchise, which was adapted as a popular 1960s television series and was inspired by the original radio program created in the 1930s. Hornet follows the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy who inherits his father's crusading newspaper, the Daily Sentinel. By night he is a masked hero, fighting crime with his sidekick, Kato (Stephen Chow), who has incredible martial-arts skills. Rogen and his writer partner Evan Goldberg joined the project in July 20, 2007, as writers and co-executive producers.

Rogen, whose film projects to date have been primarily comedic in nature, said that the forthcoming update will evoke other action films that feature an undercurrent of humor.

"I've seen the early Indiana Jones movies in theaters, and they kill," Rogen said. "There's laughs throughout the whole thing, and it doesn't feel like a comedy per se. It just feels like something that's trying to solicit reactions from the audience, and we think of movies like True Lies and stuff like that. That's more kind of what we're going for with this."

The comedy in the Indiana Jones movies and True Lies worked because they played it straight. It was more subtle than the "Hit you over the head" type comedy we see too much of in a lot of the films today.

As an example, look at the one liners they use in all three CSI TV Shows. A quick clever quip that leaves you giggling and shaking your head while commenting, "He did NOT just say that!"

By AWWMan!! at 4:25 PM ON 03/22/09

O.K. this is just wrong, nothing against Seth
but, I agree with Bluesman, the Green Hornet of old was trying to be as serious as possible, not comedic, the comedy was a accident. If you're going to mess with this classic of my childhood, at least make sure you get a martial artist of Bruce Lee's or Jet Lees calliber!

Real life is funny. People are funny. Seth Rogan doesn't strike me as knowing what's normal 'people who are funny' and what's slapstick farcical sit-com nonsense.

When anyone in Hollywood says comedy, they are referring to the latter not the former.

By jbs780 at 5:26 PM ON 03/22/09

I watched the TV show...the entire time it was on...one...ONE...1...season. How popular was it...really. I've never seen it in syndication. Does TVLand run it? Is there a DVD of the series? Really don't know.

This character should be done straight...not for laughs. Comic relief is OK, but not out right comedy. I don't see Rogen as that kind of actor. Maybe I'm selling him short.

Anybody know anything about this Chow Fellow? Is is he good at M.A.?

By Leroy Morte at 5:44 PM ON 03/22/09

Does anyone think this movie will rise above straight to dvd level? Or even make it that far? All of the recent good superhero genre movies have worked because they played it straight, will comedy mixed in as suggested in previous posts. All the ones that sucked wanted to be funny to start with. This isn't "Dude ,wheres my cape?", and it won't work as a comedy.

By Chaintinker at 8:04 PM ON 03/22/09

Stephen Chow seems to be a very good Martial artist with a large Asian following. He directed and starred in Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer. The best thing he has going for him is that I heard at one time he was a die hard fan of Bruce Lee and has studied him extensively.

The Rumor is that Adam Sandler will also have a small role in this film, and while Sandler's comedy is in the more slapstick areas, he has been known to make the occasional serious movie.

I'll wait and see what comes out of this before making any judgments. I think the intention is there, just have to see the execution.

By arcee at 8:41 PM ON 03/22/09

I want this to succeed and I don't want to be a person that judges too early but.... I dunno. I don't trust Rogan's judgment so far and I would rather NOT see a GH movie than see a BAD one.

Although short, I really loved that one season of GH and I think due to copyright issues between 20th Century and Greenway there hasn't been an official release of the show.

By malachimanson at 8:45 PM ON 03/22/09

jbs780 yes its been replayed. I watched it as a child and I'm only 25 so do the math. I grow up watching the reruns of Hornet and Adam West's Batman.

The later should be a good example of what they should do now. We don't have a 60's version of Batman on the big screen.

By Nachtwulf at 8:46 PM ON 03/22/09

Now... if he'll admit he's an idiot by turning what could be a very very good action movie into a farce... he'll understand why most people despise his connection with the Green Hornet property.

Yeah... right... *THAT"LL* happen. 8D

By the thing is at 8:54 PM ON 03/22/09

Rogen just isn't that funny to me, and him co-writing this makes me wonder how good it could actually be. But, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, because there is not a writer on this planet that will make "the Green Hornet" watchable. Such a boring choice of comics. Just makes me yawn.

By Bluesman at 9:14 PM ON 03/22/09

Oh, malachimanson, you really need to expand your horizons. Take a look at this; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060153/ . I am also a big fan of the original Batman Serials from the 40's.

By MattS at 1:03 AM ON 03/23/09

Thank you Bluesman. The original and best Batman movie. All the live action movies since Batman has failed as a character. The villains can be amazing, supporting characters, even Bruce Wayne can be well acted and interesting (though that's not always the case) but the character of Batman has been painful ever since he's been re-imagined on the big screen by Tim Burton.

I enjoy the old Green Hornet show, the few episodes I've seen and the radio show has a wonderful feel to it, but I am curious what can happen with this theatrical version though I'm certainly not holding my breath for it.

By DarkHawke at 7:46 AM ON 03/23/09

Jebus! Anyone holding the Adam West Batman movie as the paragon of the character's silver screen escapades is in DEEP need of the highest quality psychiatric care that this nation can provide!

On topic, I'd suggest Mr. Rogen watch the movie version of "The Shadow" and take extensive notes. A not-bad movie that had A LOT of its dark tone killed off by the imprudent use of "funny" lines. Had Shiwan Kahn not interrupted his introductory monologue to comment on the quality of Lamont Cranston's suit, it would have really helped to sell both characters!

By QuantumSam at 9:38 AM ON 03/23/09

BTW guys, Stephen Chow is Brue Lee caliber. If he was still doing the directing, you could have been sure that there would be humor and that it would work flawlessly.

This will be garbage. Garbage.

By Captain Jack Harkness at 11:16 AM ON 03/23/09

I watched the original run of the 60's GH and was glued to my screen and have tapes of reruns from later years. I've been waiting and waiting for a movie, had hopes for a while of the Kevin Smith version which failed, 'cause at least he's supposed to be a fan, but I've never even heard of Seth Rogen before which worries me, and the more I do hear, worries me.

Lets look at some facts that have been overlooked or pushed under the rug by SOOO many in Hollywood.
1. The character predated Batman and the ONLY tie in was in 1966 when the same producer for the TV show did the TV Green Hornet. That is it.
2. The Character is not a superhero, he has no super powers, no super villains, and he is at best a masked crime fighter. Really he is no different than any TV/Film crime fighter except he happens to have a secret identity.
3. The Character did not come from the comic world; comics only explored their version of the story after the radio show was already established. The later 90's Comic series further explored an alternate universe of the Green Hornet world. Not too uncommon for the comic world but not congruent with the characters true origins and world.
4. The character is a hard driving young (33 years old) successful businessman who is dedicated to fight crime in his community and wherever it occurs. NOT a lazy billionaire playboy! That is pure recent media hype.
5. He is seen as a criminal in the criminal world so law enforcement is always after him. The criminals hate him because they fear him, Kato, and the Black Beauty.
6. The Green Hornet is a brilliant strategist and foils his foes in a well played out mental chess game (SEE Jason Borne or James Bond) Kato assists in strategy, weapons development and construction, and muscle when needed. Kato is essential in the mix.
5. The Green Hornet is fully capable in hand-to-hand combat in most every situation. He has a totally different style than Kato. He is in top physical condition.
6. Kato is fully competent in any situation of combat. He is so confident that his attitude comes across as smug. But make no mistake he takes crime fighting and combat very seriously. It would be a very rare occurrence if he were bested in hand-to-hand combat.
7. The TV series was canceled because the producer was not allotted enough TV time to further develop the character. ABC only allowed 30m and Dozier insisted on 60m for the second season. He attempted to prove his point with several 2-parters in the first season. ABC refused the extra time so Dozier canceled the series. How do I know this? Because I am looking at the focus study and Nielsen reports in my hand right now. The series actually did better than Batman in focus study reports! And Batman was HUGE in 1966.
8. Production costs were out of control on Batman (A Huge hit) and budgets were getting tight so this was also a factor in sidelining the Green Hornet.
9. It is often brought up that Michael Keaton is/was a comedic actor and he did well at Batman in 1989. One must realize that Keaton worked as Batman because he has shown he an actor that has depth and intensity. It makes no difference that he was in a comedic role prior. He was/is capable of VERY serious roles and can portray a very dark character, which is needed for the Dark Knight. Same goes for Robin Williams as The Joker or Riddler. He has proven himself in serious roles and can also be a believable villain that can also be very dark. Can Seth?
10. The Green Hornet does not exist in the DC or Marvel comic’s universe.
11. Seth has in the past said this will be a comedy then said it will be an action film just like Pineapple Express , so who knows what he/they will decide on.
(Pineapple Express actually shows little impressive action scenes.)
12.The French have done an excellent interpretation in their short film located here. http://www.lefrelonvert-court.com/
13.There was actually a plan for the Green Hornet to have a feature film in 1967. It was dropped because the series was dropped, plain and simple.
14.Batman was NEVER the Dark night until much later in his genesis. The 60’s TV interpretation was not far off from the comics of the day. The Dark Knight came much later!

They were able to hold the elements together for Spider-man, Fantastic Four, Elektra, Daredevil, Hulk, Iron Man, X-Men, Batman, Superman, Punisher, Blade so why not do the same for the Green Hornet? The Hornet is more like a Jason Borne, or a James Bond without the MI5-CIA connection. Hard fighting, mental strategy game, interesting gadget technology.

Anything less than what the character is or was created to be is just a slap in the face to all of fandom and aficionados of the genre. People do not want something different they want something familiar but updated to take advantage of the wonderful film technology we have today.

Look for inspiring films to model off of like:
1. Ronin
2. Blade (especially the first 10 minutes)
3. The Professional (especially the first 10 minutes)
4. Casino Royal (especially the first 10 minutes)
5. The Usual Suspects
6. Smokin Aces (the plot twist)
7. The Bourne films
8. To some degree the Transporter films.

Chow is out as a director and actor. Probably because he saw the film not honoring the respect of Bruce Lee. Either way Chow was a comedic film maker as is Rogen. We should expect nothing more than Rush Hour type of film from Rogen,

Indiana Jones worked because they had a brilliant directors as did True lies, can we say the same for this project?

Filmgoers want to leave the film after paying their $10 saying “…damn that was awesome!” Not “Damn I could have blown that $10 bucks elsewhere and been happier.”

Fans are not looking for another Rush Hour film, they did that and it was fine for what it was.

Impress us Seth! Don’t rip us off!

Hey "Why", got a little too much time on your hands there?

By a different tim at 1:52 AM ON 03/24/09

Why doesn't anyone want the Green Hornet to be a little funny? Fricking get over it. Why do people on this site not like Seth Rogen? I know why. You're closeted Seth Rogen fans. The guys funny and he makes a lot of money si he can pretty much do what ever he wants. Leave'em alone and go back to playing with your star wars action figures and you can be ultra serious with them.

By AminRah at 5:01 PM ON 03/24/09

Ok if there is going to be some comedy please put it in the right place. No stupid funny business. But if i remember correctly Green Hornet was not a funny guy and neither was Kato. They were very serious when it came to getting the job done.
