Ain't It Cool News has what it says are spoilers for Tron 2 or TR2N or whatever it's called, based on anonymous sources. Here's a taste:
The movie starts in 1989. Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) has created some of the world's top-selling games based on his Game Grid challenges in the first film, and has marketed the hell out of what he saw there (action figures, Recognizer night lights, etc.).
Flynn has a 7-year-old son named Sean.
Flynn disappears, leaving behind his son.
Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) takes over Flynn's company, ENCOM.
Jump forward in time: Sean is now twentysomething.
Alan Bradley has info that leads Sean to look for Flynn.
Light Cycles vs. Light Jets.

Why do they always throw in little kids to entce little kids to see it??? The original Star Wars had no kids in it, and did just fine!!!

Amended: Why do they always throw in little kids to entice children to see science fiction and fantasy films??? The original Star Wars had no kids in it, and did just fine with the kid demo!!!

Uber Critic,
Did you utterly fail to read the bit about how Seas grows up and "...is now twentysomething" by the time the movie really gets into the groove of things? I have a feeling you did.

S.W.:
Yeah, I read it, but you know they'll give us the obligatory 5 to 10 minutes of the kid in a prologue...just like the new Star Trek film. Of course, the worst offenders of the, "We have to pack this film with at least one kid" rule, are Terminator 2, The Mummy 2, and Star Wars: Phantom Menace...which went on from start to finish...in all three movies.
My point in all this is to say that if you make a movie for all demos, the attraction should be the story, not the gimmick of throwing children into the story in order to sell more toys.

I guess I don't see it as a gimmick necessarily when they are using the kid for what will probably amount to 10-15 minutes of backstory. Sounds like a basic plot device, nothing more. If they were using the kid throughout the movie, then I might be on the "use kids to get kids" bandwagon with you. But here, I don't see it.

I want a Recognizer night light!

I just hope the movie looks good. I really hope they spend alot of time in TRON world. No offence but I recongnize Vancouver enough that it wouldn't pass for LA like in the original film. That would kind of spoil it for me.

Uber Critic,
They want to establish Flynn has a son and they are catching us up on the world since last we saw it all those nearly 30 years ago.
We have to know who Sean is as he will be the one to go to the digital world. I see no issue with this.

Well... You seemed to have this all sussed out in advance.
You KNOW FOR A FACT that the presence of a kid is going to bring the entire film down.
If having a kid in the beginning presents a problem for you... it's not like you HAVE to see it. Maybe there will be another movie out that doesn't have a kid in it.
Just sayin'...

Your argument is lame. Having Terminator 2 on the list make no sense at all. Are you saying this movie suffered because they added a kid to it? The entire plot of the movie is "protect the kid". It's not like they just tossed him in to appeal to the "kid demo". Need I remind you T2 was rated R. They weren't after the "kid demo" Not to mention that T2 is one of the best SciFi/Action movies ever made. The "added kid" didn't take away from T2 one iota.
And, while Phantom Menace is not as good a film as T2 I don't see how you propose they tell the story of Darth Vader (starting as a boy) without adding a kid.
Your examples are laughable.
