Star Trek sequel already in the works

\<em\>Star Trek\<\/em\> sequel already in the works

Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a sequel to its Star Trek franchise relaunch, and has hired Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to pen the screenplay, Variety reported.

J.J. Abrams, who directed and produced the latest chapter, is onboard to produce the follow-up alongside his Bad Robot partner Bryan Burk. No decision has been made yet on whether Abrams will return behind the camera for the sequel.

"There's obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn't even come out yet," said Lindelof, co-creator with Abrams of ABC's Lost who produced the upcoming Trek but did not contribute to Orci and Kurtzman's screenplay. "But we're so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed."

The story is still in the embryonic stage, but the trio are aiming to deliver their script to the studio by Christmas for what would likely be a summer 2011 release. As for potential storylines, Kurtzman stressed that the writing team will wait to take a cue from fan reaction about which direction to go.

FIRST!!!

And it is kind of silly to think of a sequel when no one has seen this finished product? what if it sucks?

Did the producers of Battlefield Earth plan for a sequel before they released their crapfest?

Not to say that this will be that bad.. but EVERY producer always syas that their movie is the greatest thing since sliced bread..

By Kyle Nin at 10:29 AM ON 03/31/09

Do you really think this movie will be as bad as "Battlefield Earth"? I mean, really?

By pltmphoenix at 11:04 AM ON 03/31/09

Don't know if the movie is going to be any good.. But it's probably assured blockbuster status. I mean, have you not been in touch with JJ's stuff in the last few years .. Lost, Alias, Cloverfield .. whether or not it sucks .. it's gonna probably make a whole lot more money than any of the other treks on the strength of JJ alone.

And they are ONLY planning right now .. so if it does make a bit of money, the next project will be ready to go

Personally, I believe they're past "hubris" and into unmitiagated audacity. Why not just go ahead and announce a trilogy before the first one's released? Chuckleheads.

By SensibleHead at 11:52 AM ON 03/31/09

As far as the studio is concerned, it makes sense to do this. In terms of the cost of a movie, paying some writers to develop a script is peanuts. Then, if Paramount wants a second movie, they have something in the works already. This also secures the services of a team of writers they want to work on the project rather than waiting, only to discover the people are working on other projects.

I know it seems weird, but that's Hollywood!

Aw, C'mon! Battlefield Earth Was the greatest ... sorry. Almost shot milk out of my nose trying that line.

Anyway, the new Trek has a lot of potential and the previews look great so unless they really have a crappy story behind it I expect fans raving about a sequel before the first weekend.

Here's hoping.

Battlefield Earth...Oh, my head...

By Nid celle at 12:42 PM ON 03/31/09

I only hope that Cloverfield makes a cameo. She is so cute!

Cool! More Star Trek after way too long a hiatus, with the promise of more.

By Rob at 2:30 PM ON 03/31/09

Remember, a sequel to Superman Returns was also promised. After the movie was released, it was obvious that promise would never be realized.

oddly enough this thing going on with star trek has a line from star wars going around in my head. I've got a bad feeling about this.

Boy this is going to be a burr in some folks jockstrap. Keep telling yourselves you're always right about everything. In the mean time the rest of us are going to enjoy the movie and subsequent sequels.

By Jack of the Seven Benign Galaxies at 3:14 PM ON 03/31/09

Let's see the sequel first!!!! Doctor Who can take us all to 2011!! Of course, will we all be stopping along the way to see each and every episode and movie of Doctor Who, SO LET'S GO!

By Wordwitty at 5:18 PM ON 03/31/09

Lest you forget, Superman and Superman 2 were filmed simultaneously. All three Lord of the Rings were done pretty much back to back. No one knew before it came out that it would be well received. The first two Godfather films were planned in one fell swoop. There is a history of this being done right.

By IsoTek at 5:44 PM ON 03/31/09

Thank you Wordwitty. For all the vaunted film buffs we have on this board, it appears that only a scant few know film history with respects to filming sequels and potentially filming them back to back.

That said, who cares about their hubris concerning a sequel, either it will get made or not, if the studio wants to have the cash outlay for a sequel before the primary movie has been shown, that is their perogative. I just don't see the need to get my boxers in a twist over this.

Star Trek II: Space Seed

By Impy at 11:02 PM ON 03/31/09

Hey! We can get "Red Dwarf" on this thing. Cool!

By magnusknight at 1:15 AM ON 04/01/09

Let's hop Paramount doesn't run to the well yet again. Time travel plots started the slow downward spiral of the franchise that all but killed it. I only hope there's an actually story line in this new film and it's sequel. Although I am a hard core Star Trek Fan, I will give this film a chance to win me over.

By Fizzben at 9:46 AM ON 04/01/09

I agree magnusknight. To make a determination before knowing all the facts just makes people look stupid. I'm a hard core fan too but I always give everything at least one chance to prove itself.

By Peter at 9:47 AM ON 04/01/09

Actually, I think the producers of Battlefield Earth _did_ plan on a sequel, since the movie only adapts the first half of the novel. I remember reading someone talking about it. Obviously, the plans fell through when the movie sucked even more than the book (which at least had a sort of popcornish, 'turn your brain off' kind of fun, at least for a teenager)

By Chip2800 at 10:51 AM ON 04/01/09

They should probably just plan a ten film arc with the new cast. Why not? Good or bad. . .won't most people watch anything? But, I have high hopes for this film. Perhaps Whedon can direct the sequel.

By huckster at 7:45 PM ON 04/01/09

I will NOT and I mean NOT go and see this version of Star Trek.. It doesn't live up to Gene's actual vision of the future. All Paramount did was get a whole bunch of names. I know alot of people that will not go to see it at all.

By fizzben at 9:13 AM ON 04/02/09

good huckster, more seats for me and my friends and I know a lot of people that never cared for Star Trek before that are going to see the movie. You and your angry bunch will not be missed.

By bombdrop at 2:14 PM ON 04/02/09

You pissant bunch of Abrams-loving wannabes are more than welcome to all the empty seats you can find. Trust me, there will be plenty.

By fizzben at 5:31 PM ON 04/02/09

Well I don't trust you.

By bombdrop at 2:24 PM ON 04/03/09

Fizzben, that is the smartest thing you have ever said in your short life.

By mattgamer at 7:52 PM ON 05/12/09

haha, squeal will be amazing if this trio has any hand in it.

By DONGER at 12:01 AM ON 01/30/10
