Terminator, Dollhouse ratings creep up for the first time

\<i\>Terminator, Dollhouse\<\/i\> ratings creep up for the first time
Boyd (Harry Lennix) helps Echo (Eliza Dushku) in the Dollhouse episode "Echoes," airing March 27

The Hollywood Reporter's LiveFeed column reported that Fox's Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dollhouse both saw their ratings rise on Friday for the first time.

Terminator (3.5 million viewers, 1.2 preliminary adults 18-49 rating) went up 20 percent for the March 13 episode "Today Is the Day, Part 1."

Dollhouse (4.3 million, 1.6 rating) went up 7 percent.

After four weeks of gradual but steady decline, the gain could mean both shows have at least found their midseason bottoms, the column reported.

If Joss Whedon's series can creep up a few more notches, the show will have a fair chance of coming back next fall.

Dollhouse is getting better and better by the episode!!! :D

By chuk_38 at 6:24 AM ON 03/16/09

WOW! I am chuffed! (Never seen Sarah Connor, but loving Dollhouse). Lets just hope that ratings keep getting better (for fans of both shows).

A happy Glaswegian. :)

I'm liking Dollhouse more and more, but I'm loving TSCC. It has consistently been one of the best written and acted shows this year regardless of genre, and it deserves more attention. I think it is not getting it because too many people either think it was going to be like the movies (all action) or else it is not enough like the movies (not enough action, too much character introspection). I think it has hit a happy medium and is building to a great season-ending climax.

Yes keep them coming

By Al at 10:49 AM ON 03/16/09

I've got my fingers crossed to keep both shows going, but Fox isn't known for keeping good shows like this going.

Unless the ratings double before the season ends, I wouldn't expect the Fox execs to notice anything other than the shiny new reality shows in the horizon they can put in place of these great shows.

By Bill at 10:52 AM ON 03/16/09

Hmm, I was very disappointed in Dollhouse. It has been improving, but hasn't been up to Whedon's previous work by a long shot. I guess I was hoping for Firefly quality and that was just a rare occurrence.

Dollhouse is getting better with each episode and Terminator is always been good, but I do wish they could bring in a bit more action. Do these ratings factor in DVR?

By Vlad at 11:26 AM ON 03/16/09

Dollhouse started really poorly - might as well have been Tru Calling (which I didn't like) - but it's been getting better each week, and I unashamedly look forward to it now.

Echo's slight but noticeable steps towards some self-awareness while in Dollstate give me hope for some impending non-Active drama.

By JD at 11:51 AM ON 03/16/09

It seems that most people who watch Dollhouse can't seem to understand that this is a new direction for Whedon. No, it's not Buffy or Firefly. So what? Can't the guy spread his wings a little and try something new? It has every bit as much depth and intrigue. Perhaps even more so because of its more serious tone. I'm glad it's not like Buffy or Firefly (though I love both those shows to death). Artists are allowed to try something new every now and then.

By wxman at 12:54 PM ON 03/16/09

I was skeptical at first, but I must confess that I'm enjoying Dollhouse more and more.

By Erika at 12:58 PM ON 03/16/09

I still don't understand why people were shocked at last week's numbers, hello....the audience who watches both of these shows all went out to see WATCHMEN. Expect the DVR numbers for that week to be massive like they've been every week since both shows started their winter runs.

By Pixel at 1:52 PM ON 03/16/09

After a shaky - and no doubt studio enforced dumbing down - pilot, Dollhouse has improved every single week, until last Friday, when for the first time I felt "we have a Joss show again." Roll on the rest of the season!

By tati at 2:45 PM ON 03/16/09

I like both of these shows. Dollhouse has improved tremendously since episode one. I have to admit that I catch both on Hulu, though, rather than their original airtimes--it's just a conflict of schedules but I'm grateful to have Hulu otherwise I'd have to find another...alternative...

I hope they renew these shows--

By MattLive at 3:20 PM ON 03/16/09

It would be such a diservice for Dollhouse if a show like Terminator: TSCC gets cancelled or vice versa. Both shows compliment each others well. It's friday so DVR-ratings are usually higher on this night.

That does not mean DVR-ratings need to be valued less. Some at Fox even say they can be valued more. It seems that Fox also knows that viewership attitudes have changed to more time delayed viewings, online viewings, (pirated viewings) and so on - which gives shows lite these more leeway in the Nielsen ratings. There's a tech savvy bunch watching these shows. The more Fox can adapt ways to watch the shows for these viewers the better measured will the ratings be. The friday night time slot is also an excellent way for the broadcasting company to experiment and evaluate this new viewership issue.

My guess is that both shows really have a higher viewership than the Nielsen ratings presents.

i love sarah!

By Bruce_Wayne at 4:47 PM ON 03/16/09

Wasn't a week ago that SciFi Wire reported a huge audience increase for both these shows when factoring in DVR viewers! Like 30% for both shows! I watch TSCC Sunday evenings after 24, Lost, and Battlestar.

I hope TSCC returns in the fall. It is beautifully written, and indeed the HOTTEST cast on tv. Lena, Summer, and Stephanie???!!! Where ya goin???

By avalon224 at 6:59 PM ON 03/16/09

I love Sarah Conner Chronciles and have since the start. I hope it gets another season. Enjoying Dollhouse.... and have been since show 1. It's great having Eliza Dushku back on TV.

Fridays have been great with Sarah,Echo &
Starbuck:-)

By squirrel at 10:26 PM ON 03/16/09

I'd be surprised if Terminator gets a third season since every episode in the second season is worse than the one before. But if they do they better hire better writers.

By Gill Avila at 3:53 AM ON 03/17/09

What I find both unspeakable and inexplicable is the high ratings that "reality" shows get. Has the American public become so dumbed down that they actually eat up that garbage like hogs at a trough? Thank God I have a library going back 50 years, and young friends who actually want me to "feed their heads!!"

By Requiem1971 at 4:00 AM ON 03/17/09

I'm ok with TSCC cause I can really get into that Summer Glau character, however I'm already partial to Ghost Whisperer so I have to miss out on this show. But I've been with Dollhouse since episode one.

With #s like I'm not holding out much hope for Terminator coming back, but Dollhouse still has a chance. Worse comes to worse they can trim back the budget a bit and try to build an audience. The question remains...will they?

By Farva at 4:20 PM ON 03/17/09

Dollhouse has been steadily getting better imo, so hopefully it stays. I'm a fan of TSCC but tbh its just not a great show. The last 3 or 4 episodes have been complete rubbish.

By Goolfee at 4:47 PM ON 03/17/09

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is ONE of the BEST shows out there!! I love the characters, the story, the plot, etc! I really hope there is a 3rd season. I would be very upset if the show doesnt get renewed!! Dollhouse is getting better and better by the episode and I hope this show can keep good ratings! Both shows are great!!!

By holoscotty at 11:38 PM ON 03/24/09

I DVR'ed Dollhouse since the beginning, but only this week finally got to sit down and watch the first six episodes, which was an excellent plan, as it enabled me to get hooked on the show much easier. If I had to digest the pilot for a week on it's own, I probably wouldn't have tuned in again, but episode 2 got me hooked. To the eggheads at FOX who keep tabs on this stuff - KEEP DOLLHOUSE.

By earlleegraves at 3:20 PM ON 03/26/09

I dvr Dollhouse every Friday since it started cause i'm just not around the tv at that time as i'm sure the times these days has many others in that situation. Get to watch it saturday morning and i just love the concept and everything about it. I think it's got a lot going for it to become a very good long running series. FOX please note.

By PDXCHawk at 10:48 PM ON 03/30/09

I think the ratings spike has less to do with Watchmen and more to do with the wind-up of Battlestar.

By RealAmerican at 6:42 AM ON 04/13/09

what cracks me up is you are all discussing "ratings" as if the nielson system used is anywhere near accurate and is not a completely failed statistical system. 20,000 Nielson families determine "Ratings" for 109 million american TV viewers. its why shows that are kickass like Firefly fall by the canceled chopping block. you guys want good shows to stay around, you should join the movement to abolish nielson and develop REAL ratings system that track the actual channels watched through cable and satellite.

By VnHorn at 4:46 PM ON 04/25/09

The Nielson ratings are pretty accurate as anyone who knows anything about statistics can tell you. The problem is that both of these shows cater to a niche audience. I wasn't a fan of Buffy at all, never really got a chance to watch Firefly, but am loving Dollhouse. That said, I think with very few exceptions it's only the die-hard Whedonites (didn't know that term until a month ago) who watch this because everyone else thinks of it as some specialty thing for super nerds. All it really needs is more exposure to more people since it does a good job balancing the stuff Whedon fans like while also being interesting to others if they ever saw it.

By Stats at 10:04 PM ON 04/27/09

The Nielson ratings are pretty inaccurate, as anyone who knows anything about statistics can tell you.

"The biggest problem for Nielsen is that it relies on excruciatingly small samples to predict what the rest of the country is watching. There are approximately 10,000 households with Nielsen set top boxes across the country, about 450 of which include college students. And out of those 450, 30 percent agreed to have their children’s viewing habits recorded while away at school. This translates to roughly 135 students — a painfully small number to be considered representative of the entire country’s college student population, yet still more than the zero who represented us before. Furthermore, this small sample is not atypical for Nielsen data, which, at the outset, posed little problems due to the small number of channels. In the digital age, however, with more channels than we know what to do with, such a small sample can hardly be taken seriously as an accurate representation of the entire country’s viewing preferences."

Simply Google "Nielson ratings: An Inaccurate Truth"

By niteowl08 at 5:43 PM ON 05/03/09

Terminator: SCC is a great show. Sarah is a strong and interesting woman.

Dollhouse needs work. The premise is too vague to care what happens to Echo.

By ItsMe at 2:53 AM ON 05/04/09

Dollhouse is sooo good. Fox, please keep it! I loved it from the beginning and it keeps getting better and better. More intrigue, I love how the storyline is unraveling.

I usually don't catch the show live though and watch it online--I wonder if online viewers factor into ratings or Fox's decision to keep the show.

By ultrajones at 6:52 AM ON 05/04/09

The Nielson ratings are NOT accurate and let me tell you why. Sure, the ratings depict a true cross section of American audience in a sound scientific fashion. This however is NOT accuracy in rating a shows worth. For one thing, the ratings do not share the intelligence level of the watchers along with the results. Simple fact is that the average watcher TSCC and Dollhouse are in the top 40% of the population intellectually. So, if we HAD this PROVEN then then FOX could sell it's advertising for the show to those who actually want the attention of smart people, and all would be well. Shows like NCIS regurgitate formula "drama" over and over again, but in such a way that makes average people FEEL smart. TSCC and Dollhouse are brilliant imaginative story telling and also sometimes tackle issues and serious dramatic situations that more popular TV shows never will. The deep imaginative story of TSCC and the originality, fully realized characters, and science "future" of Dollhouse, are simply over the heads of the mass public.
