Are none of you aware that the director is simply trying to be faithful to the graphic novel, (which repeatedly shows Manhattans penis), and that scifi is simply dutifully reporting different facets of the story as they occur?

When the story broke about the other movie company trying to stall the release over petty rights squabbles, did any of you complain that scifi is needlessly reporting on legal battles that have nothing to do with scifi? I doubt it, but it's no less true, is it?

Yeah, some of you do need to grow up, namely every single one of you who had a problem either with the films nudity or with scifi for reporting on the topic!

Of course I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem with a movie scene of a baby getting eaten by a psychopath in another slasher pic, but a showing a naked person? That's just obscene!

The Blue Penis is faithful to the comic and important to the plot. It's meant to show that Doctor Manhattan isn't really human anymore and can't relate well to them. They can barely get him to wear the banana hammock for public appearances.

I think the decline in quality of this site is from the readers & commentors, not the writers. Nudity has been discussed in films and theater since the inception of films and theater and is a legitimate topic to discuss, especially given that it played a pretty important role in the original graphic novel. I always thought sci-fi fans were progressive, but reading Scii Fi Wire you'd think half of the people commenting are stuck in the 1950s.

Hey, let's be real here. Even in 2009, male nudity, blue male cgi nudity, is a story. A good deal of SF, Fantasy and Horror depicts scantily clad, even naked, female nudity, be it on covers, posters, or on the screen. It's worth noting, even joking a bit, about the nudity in Watchmen.

There's nothing cheap or exploitive about it.

Front page teaser in today's (5 March 09) Richmond (Virginia) Times-Dispatch tells us NOT to go see this film. Opening to the reviewer's article I note immediately that he has given this flick one star out of four, with another admonition to not go see it. I find 2 things laughable about all this:

I immediately got online to see if anyone could give a reasonable explanation for the sheer amount of penis in this film.
I was looking for a straightforward answer, and I got one out of this site, luckily- the penis representing Manhattan's disconnect with the human race.

I think it's pretty exciting that we're FINALLY getting to the point where male nudity in mainstream movies is no longer a big deal. I went to see the movie on friday. I came out of the theatre and bought another ticket to see it again then I watched it again yesterday. Absolutely brilliant movie. I didn't have a problem with Jon's penis. In fact I think Laurie was an idiot to leave that for the whimpering lump of fat. Rorchach, The Comedien and Dr Manhatten stood out for me in this movie.

Truthfully, when you think about it, he wasn't above humanity he was more evolved than humanity at the time. With great power and intelligence it becomes obvious that clothing and the ridiculous nuances of human nature that cloud our judgment are of very little consequence when you see the bigger picture and meaning in life. However, what I love about the film is that fact that it also points out that Mr. Manhattan needed to appreciate the little nuances of life to find the truth in humanity, the gift of life and that no matter how chaotic human nature is, it is this same chaos that makes us who we really are.

Okay, first of all, "The Big Blue Cock" is purely gratuitous, it doesn't even show up that much in the graphic novel, it was "inserted' (so to speak,) just for shock value and to drag out commentaries like this one.
(Same for the "Tijuana Bible" Laura's mother shows her; you don't even see the inside in the novel, but the movie shows pages with penetration and "spatter shots")
