Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment have acquired Merman, a fantasy romantic comedy script by Jennifer Abu Hollander, Variety reported.
The movie will be produced by Imagine's Brian Grazer, who also produced the similarly themed Splash, which was a breakout hit that forged his partnership with director Ron Howard.
The story follows a merman who comes to land so he can win back his mermaid fiancee, who has left him for a real man. The story was hatched by the screenwriter and Jeff Moskowitz.

I want to say something derisive and obnoxious, but I'm just stunned at how much that plot totally doesn't interest me. I guess I'm not the target audience because I'm not a twelve-year-old girl (well, except for every third Saturday night of the month, but not for cheap).

Uh, this is going to be difficult...could be great....but not an easy task. I sincerely hope they make it right.
